skull creek boathouse

i fell in love with boathouse last year! we try to return as often as we can when on the island! just thinking about the shrimp and crab dip is enough to inspire a road trip! the bbq bacon wrapped shrimp is delectable ~just need to remember to order it more on the well side if you are not a sushi lover. the coconut/almond shrimp is good too. my hubby ordered the seafood stew, which sounded less than appealling to me, but he gave it his thumbs up, with a side note that the tomato sauce was a tad overpowering. great atmospere on the water~ the kids saw a few dolphin friends and we see you soon! got our usual great family photo opp on the dock with our pelican stand in~

for a two hour wait, it was just ok. fried shrimp were good. side dishes were cold. best thing was the bread and hush puppies. bread was so fresh and had a corn meal crust. i could have eaten that all night! husband had the steam shrimp which was delicious but his sides were cold as well. i might would go back just a lot earlier

we always make a stop at the boathouse on our annual hhi vacation. this year was our last stop at skull creek. our server was nasty to say the least, and the food really bad. i'm a pretty easy to please customer and very seldom comment on poor service. it was really bad. no more boathouse for our family!

tourist trap! stay away! here's a case where hundreds of people in one restaurant is a bad sign- simply too much volume to churn out good food efficiently. our service was slow, but we were prepared to blame the huge crowds and inefficient system before we blamed our server. that is, until she gave our food to the table next to us by accident, never brought our little one her milk (until we were signing the check - bad move). waited an hour and fifteen for a table, and then an hour and fifteen for the dishes to finally be served. wish the flustered waitress would have handled her mistakes a bit better than saying, "sorry i gave your food to the wrong table." local fish plate was way overcooked and dry. we were so hungry we were shoveling the food in anyway. just too many things went wrong here last night.

ate here for 4th of july. got there around 5pm had a 45 min wait. the food was good, the service could have been better. the bread was good! need more servers!

july 2, 2013. without a doubt one of the poorest managed reception desk and hostess on the island. very unprofessional and unsupervised the wait for the poor quality of food and service was terrible
we will never return and are monthly visitors to hhs

we went straight to the skull creek boathouse for what turned into dinner #2 and where two awkward things happened:

1) we did not seem to get the attention of the hostesses, yet as soon as a man walked in they asked how he was doing.

2) a woman started talking to us & found out that i was living in bluffton. her words “the island is so much better than bluffton, isn’t it?” no lady. if it was, i would live on the island.

we had such a good time here that we came back the following day! all the things that we liked it about it the first time were there - the ring throw, the adult size jenga and the boat view.

however, the service and attitude the second time was terrible! after waiting for 30 minutes for our food (at around 2:30pm), we finally got our food. i ate a tiny bite (really hungry) before realizing that it wasn't mine. when we alerted the waitress, she snapped at both the waiter and me saying that the entree would now have to be remade. our food was taken away and given to another table (all except my entree)

however, our experience was to take a turn for the worse. i soon had a significant reaction to the calamari, which was fried with the shrimp, etc.

the did comp the meal but that wasn't the issue. at first, the waitress did nothing except to say that i should have asked (i usually do). and then she just handed us the bill with no apology. my husband had to go all the way up to the owner. the apology that i really wanted (and would have preferred to the comped meal) never showed up.

instead, our waitress' parting remark was that calamari was a shellfish because it had a beak! i know calamari is a shellfish. it is just not one that i am allergic to.

everyone from the owner on down at this establishment was rude and condescending. sometimes, all you have to do is say "sorry" but this was apparently beyond these folks.

so so seafood. my husband and i ate here on the first night during our stay at hilton head. i was fairly disappointed with the seafood. we had calamari for an appetizer, and for our meals we ordered the shrimp broil and fried shrimp. it was not fresh seafood! the best part of our meal was the bread and sweet tea. service was good...

dreamy. i love this restaurant. the atmosphere, staff, and food are amazing. the menu is huge and i could eat there everyday.

service was bad. never offered us bread. salads came out with appetizers, followed by main course 2 minutes later. won't be back.

great food and variety!. we loved the atmosphere and the wide variety of choices at the boathouse. i chose the shrimp and crab quesadillas. it was really great and different. my husband loved the trio with flounder, scallops and shrimp. definitely worth going to this place. the atmosphere is on the water and you look at the boats and visit the docks after dinner.

service was very good. menu was lengthy but limited. no baked potatoes or rice. french fries with just about everything. beautiful setting and sunset.
