two significant updates. they are now open 6 days a week (mon-sat) from 11:30am until dough runs out (they advise to call after 9pm).
and
the communal standing table now has 20 stools for sitting.
(updates thanks to blissfull g's blog)
10/22/2009: in a quick stop on the way home, had another fantastic pie, the san gennaro. got it to "eat in" and it was delivered to the common table on a half sheet. did i say "fantastic" yet? on the table was chopped garlic, parmesan, some peppers, olive oil, etc.. for adding if i saw fit... i did not, it was perfect as it came out of the oven. nice to be able to eat in... still need that glass of vino....

there's a new pizza in town!. this certainly is the real thing as described in the recent posting by blissful g that has gotten everyone so excited. wow. great thin and tasty crust with good flavor and a little char. add to this a bunch of tasty toppings in just the right amounts to give each bite a different flavor without being piled on so high that you can't pick it up. i went with the capricciosa (mushroom, artichoke, prosciutto cotto, and bufala) that, obviously, i liked very much. i really like the simple tomato sauce that is not sweet and tastes like fresh ripe tomatoes. if you like this style of pizza (very thin crust with minimal and very pure tastes cooked incredibly quickly with a little bit of char on the crust), this is really among the best in town (on only their second week).
also had a cannoli that even challenged my favorite spot in boston (mike's in the north end). very crispy shell filled to order with a sweet, rich, and slightly tangy cream. i'd go back just for one of those!
now to the one thing i have a problem with. they are carryout only (no seating). while this would be no problem if i lived a couple blocks away, it is really a problem when i live a half an hour away (more when there's traffic). why? because this type of pizza really needs to come out of the oven and onto your plate to eat, with a nice glass of red wine close by to compliment it. unfortunately, while the piece i ate as i drove away was beyond fantastic, the rest was not... just not the same trying to reheat it. if they put in some tables and start serving beer/wine, i'll be a regular! if not, i'm not sure i'll be going back too often, no matter how much i liked it. i'm just not interested in sitting in a dark car on the street in a ga tech neighborhood eating a pizza and sipping out of a paper-bag covered bottle of chianti classico...
update: blissful g reporting (as of a couple minutes ago) that they now have a communal standing-only table for dining in (it was in use as a prep area last night on my first visit). okay, one small step for pizza, one large step for atlanta gastronomy yadda yadda...
next challenge, sell me a glass of decent vino ;-)
(this is great pizza!)
