delicious. i'm a regular at art is in bakery, having discovered it about 7 months ago. i notice that other reviewers say it was better before the renovation and i can't comment on that -- however, i can't imagine it being better. less expensive, sure, but better? because the food is scrumptious!

so the real question at hand is whether you are getting value for your dollar. sandwiches run for $10 and over. and these sandwiches are big and filling. i've tried a number of sandwiches on the menu and i have loved each and every one. the pulled pork sandwich was really wonderful and i appreciated that an employee approached me half-way through to ensure i was enjoying it. the tuna melt is a delight and has so much tuna on it that i routinely share it with someone. the vegetarian sandwich (which i haven't seen on the menu recently) was my favourite and i loved how much avocado they put on it. i've also had their breakfast sandwich and it was fabulous as well. frankly, i don't think anybody does a sandwich better than art is in and it's probably because a good bread can make or break a sandwich. and art is in makes their own, wonderful breads.

so ... $10 or more for a sandwich? i would argue that a 12-inch subway sandwich will run you almost that price, and this if far above a subway sandwich.

oh, but back to bread....!!! i've tried various types of breads and it is very difficult to pick a favourite because they are all so good. if pressed, i would pick the wild yeast sourdough. my daughter loves the buttermilk bread.

the pastries are wonderful. the chocolate croissant is so flaky and soft; you can tell it was just baked. the cookies are soft and sweet. and we always bring home some cheddar and chive scones!!

the industrial vibe of thisplaceis funky and fun. it can get noisy but that's part of the fun.

the bread. amazing bread. great for sandwiches, burgers, dipping or by itself. a little expensive but you feel like you're getting you moneys worth. they also offer 2 for 1 bread during the week at specific times(not sure what time). highly recommend trying their bread.

being a huge fan of their bread i just had to try out their restaurant. so i stopped by for lunch. pretty cool place, you most likely will have to drive there, it's not really by anything. so i grabbed a spicy meatball sub to go, which was packaged in a white cardboard box. grabbed a few napkins and headed to my car. opened the box and my first thoughts were, damn i should have grabbed a fork. this was not your typical eat with your hands sub. a little heads up would have been nice but oh well. so i take a bite and although very flavorful, the spicy sub was an indian spice sub. big difference in my opinion. i just wish they would have said curry meatballs or indian meatballs, because i probably would have ordered something else.

so the lesson i learned from going here, is to ask some simple questions when ordering. what's in it and things like that.

the next visit should give me a better idea of whether this is a goodplaceto get baked goods or aplaceto get baked goods and have a nice meal.

not impressed. we used to rave about thisplacefor service and food. arrived today @ 11:06am to order 3 breakfast sandwiches to go. were told we were too late as they don't serve them after 11am. technically yes it was after 11am. but when we turned to leave to find anotherplaceto take out, there was no desire to offer another option or even check if it was possible to squeeze in a few more sandwiches. if you are going retail, then customer service should be first priority.

wow!. made my first visit here today. i remember as a kid taking walks around the vicinity of these loading docks.

despite being in a loading dock and looking like a 3rd rate cafeteria, thisplacewas busy and very, very loud. it was like being at the works. all seats were taken, about 25 people were standing and more people were coming in.

still, i was very impressed with their classic ham and cheese. it was possibly the best one i've ever eaten. it was terrific. they also had some very tantalizing desserts on tap that i surely would like to try.

if you're willing to just get take-out, this is pretty good and i definitely will go back but i feel this is a once-a-monthplacefor me. dirienzo's remains my weekly choice for a sandwich in the summer.

just goes to show you that even the hipsters in this city will eat in a less-than-luxuriousplaceif the food is terrific.

that's one way to run a business. what amazing food, and just such a likable business. i mean who wouldn't love aplacethat jacks the price by a dollar every two months, drops service to 40+ local businesses with a whopping seven days notice. sorry but good food doesn't make up for all this nonsense... i can find a good sandwich elsewhere from a business worth supporting.

went for lunch on a saturday. extremely crowded but clears at 130 pm. felt like it was a fight for a seat. the food looked really good but my dish was overly salty and my friend didn't want to finish his croissant sandwich which was literally dripping with oil. they did seem to have very nice selection of baked goods that i think would be great for take out. might give it another try if off peak hours but so far my group felt like thisplacewas overrated.

nice to see art is in expand. my only complaint about thisplaceis the long line...really, that's just a consequence of being awesome! although, as a long time patron, it is a touch disappointing that every week at the summer farmer's market, you run out of bread before noon...can we just get more bread each week this year? i promise, i'll buy it every week!

seriously though, i love thisplaceand think its definitely the best bakery in the city. a lot of hipster hot spots don't really live up to their rep...this one does, and then some!

the breads are all top notch (especially jalapeno cheddar) and the berliners are stupidly delicious! even if you think deep fried pickles sound gross but like pickles and cheese, have the spicy crispy pickle sandwich if you ever come across it here...you will not regret it but you may need to go to the gym for a bit longer that day!

best loading dock i ever ate at. i don't usually go for trendy-buzzy eateries listed on urbanspoon's "talk of the town" section. but i needed to plug an address into my gps to plot my route when driving from washington, d.c. to ottawa. i wanted to see the capitol of the new land i live in, so art is in was my lodestone. it seemed a strangeplaceto put a restaurant, amidst industrial facilities beside the railroad tracks. art is in looks like the commercial bakery it is when you enter, too. massive bake op in the back, chaotic dining area behind the garage doors with a scattershot bunch of tables and chairs that look like they came from the salvation army next door... if someone had said this is where the sally anns put on their preaching dinners for homeless alcoholics, i would not have been surprised.

but the food is surprisingly good, as pretty much every other reviewer has noted. i had a chicken caesar sandwich, which had breaded breast meat whose taste reminded me of my mom's maryland fried chicken from when i was a boy. it came on a fresh, chewy ciabatta-style roll. even the side salad was super -- great mix of greens and other fresh, fresh vegetables. that was the healthiest meal i ate on a 10-day road trip.

aside from one brew-pub in a college town on a saturday night, art is in had the most people trooping in of anyplacei saw while visiting several major towns. right up to closing time at 3 p.m. on sunday there was a stream of folks who had found this out-of-the-way spot. maybe the late-comers knew that art is in unloads its soon-to-be day-old bread at 2-for-1 prices at that hour. the sourdough loaves looked so good i bought a pair. now i have to make room in my suitcase so i can fly them back to vancouver, but with bread this fine, you know i will!

** postscript -- the two loaves of bread made it to the west coast ok. even two days old, frozen from the -16 temperature in montreal and slightly smashed inside my suitcase, they taste great toasted! vancouver has lots of fine bakeries, and i've tried many of them. but if art is in was here in rain city, it would be my go-to bread dealer. it's that good.

breakfast + lunch. i was introduced to thisplacelast sunday. i had the fennel and sausage benedict, which was served with a side of potatoes and fruit. omg. the combination of it all was amazing. i tasted my friend's maple bacon benedict and it was just as delicious. 3 days later i left work in orleans to head to the downtown bakery because i was craving a good sandwich and i knew i would be pleased with art is in. i had the butternut and arugula sandwich and a roasted tomato soup. best sandwich i've had in my life. i was recommend it by a girl at the counter since i told her i was 90% vegan. it was 100% vegetarian. to die for, seriously,

lunch. finally made it to art is in for lunch and i wasn't disappointed. i had the buttermilk chicken sandwich and my friend had the angus beef sandwich. they were both absolutely delicious and the side salad, with fresh blueberries and cucumber, nicely rounded out the meal. the food was wholesome and flavourful, a greatplaceto grab lunch.

this is what bakeries dream of becoming. we couldn't quite believe that the docking bay we pulled into actually could contain a bakery restaurant, but then we saw all the people. stopped in for lunch. wow.

first of all, this is the onlyplacei've ever experienced that did bread, sweets and meals all equally well. you can watch the bakers cranking out some of the best bread ottawa has to offer. don't limit yourself to just one. they freeze well too.

i got the pulled pork taco and he got the steak sandwich. both were outstanding. i returned for a croissant (for him), a sticky bun (for me) and a cappuccino. even the coffee was crazy good. the croissant...is the best you will find in this city. it's perfection. really. and i'm *very* hard on bakeries that do them.

this is where you should go.

art is in my belly!. what is there possibly left to say about art is in bakery? if you haven't been yet just follow the hollandaise road! everything they make is nothing short of a masterpiece. breakfast, brunch, lunch, dessert - chevre which way you go its beyond satisfying.

space is an important concept in art, so make sure you have plenty in your belly before coming here! i have had the buttermilk brined chicken caesar, prosciutto, chicken curry, veggie guacamole melt sandwiches, breakfast croissanwich and countless desserts and breads. everything they create is nothing short of lip smacking, omg why did i wait so long to return, mouthwatering, pure, unadulterated deliciousness. bring a loaf of bread home with you, its the yeast you could do for the withdrawals sure to come tomorrow.

cumin through the rye, thisplacetook the ottawa foodie scene to a whole other level... as well as the food porn industry. if you are a fan of art is in bakery on facebook, you are willingly entering a friendship built on masochism. its absolute torture to see their daily creations displayed in your news feed, just calling to you and you cant help but jump up, throw over your desk chair sprinting down to city center salivating.

for the love of food, just go!
