another one bits the dust. i remember when i first discovered thisbakerytwo years ago and was so thrilled. finally a great bread spot in ottawa! two years later, as is usually the case, art is in's increased popularity has led to decreased customer appreciation. the same sandwich that used to cost me $5.95 is now $9.95 with no additions or sides. i'm very disappointed that success only means profit. since art is in doesn't seem to care about selling me good food at a reasonable cost, i don't plan to eat there anymore.

nice to see art is in expand. my only complaint about this place is the long line...really, that's just a consequence of being awesome! although, as a long time patron, it is a touch disappointing that every week at the summer farmer's market, you run out of bread before noon...can we just get more bread each week this year? i promise, i'll buy it every week!

seriously though, i love this place and think its definitely the bestbakeryin the city. a lot of hipster hot spots don't really live up to their rep...this one does, and then some!

the breads are all top notch (especially jalapeno cheddar) and the berliners are stupidly delicious! even if you think deep fried pickles sound gross but like pickles and cheese, have the spicy crispy pickle sandwich if you ever come across it here...you will not regret it but you may need to go to the gym for a bit longer that day!

best loading dock i ever ate at. i don't usually go for trendy-buzzy eateries listed on urbanspoon's "talk of the town" section. but i needed to plug an address into my gps to plot my route when driving from washington, d.c. to ottawa. i wanted to see the capitol of the new land i live in, so art is in was my lodestone. it seemed a strange place to put a restaurant, amidst industrial facilities beside the railroad tracks. art is in looks like the commercialbakeryit is when you enter, too. massive bake op in the back, chaotic dining area behind the garage doors with a scattershot bunch of tables and chairs that look like they came from the salvation army next door... if someone had said this is where the sally anns put on their preaching dinners for homeless alcoholics, i would not have been surprised.

but the food is surprisingly good, as pretty much every other reviewer has noted. i had a chicken caesar sandwich, which had breaded breast meat whose taste reminded me of my mom's maryland fried chicken from when i was a boy. it came on a fresh, chewy ciabatta-style roll. even the side salad was super -- great mix of greens and other fresh, fresh vegetables. that was the healthiest meal i ate on a 10-day road trip.

aside from one brew-pub in a college town on a saturday night, art is in had the most people trooping in of any place i saw while visiting several major towns. right up to closing time at 3 p.m. on sunday there was a stream of folks who had found this out-of-the-way spot. maybe the late-comers knew that art is in unloads its soon-to-be day-old bread at 2-for-1 prices at that hour. the sourdough loaves looked so good i bought a pair. now i have to make room in my suitcase so i can fly them back to vancouver, but with bread this fine, you know i will!

** postscript -- the two loaves of bread made it to the west coast ok. even two days old, frozen from the -16 temperature in montreal and slightly smashed inside my suitcase, they taste great toasted! vancouver has lots of fine bakeries, and i've tried many of them. but if art is in was here in rain city, it would be my go-to bread dealer. it's that good.

breakfast + lunch. i was introduced to this place last sunday. i had the fennel and sausage benedict, which was served with a side of potatoes and fruit. omg. the combination of it all was amazing. i tasted my friend's maple bacon benedict and it was just as delicious. 3 days later i left work in orleans to head to the downtownbakerybecause i was craving a good sandwich and i knew i would be pleased with art is in. i had the butternut and arugula sandwich and a roasted tomato soup. best sandwich i've had in my life. i was recommend it by a girl at the counter since i told her i was 90% vegan. it was 100% vegetarian. to die for, seriously,

it mostly sells handmade artisan bread, but man oh man is this bread ever special. the guy who runs thebakerylearned how to make bread in new york and france. ‘nough said. i’d been a few time to buy bread and was always impressed.

this is what bakeries dream of becoming. we couldn't quite believe that the docking bay we pulled into actually could contain abakeryrestaurant, but then we saw all the people. stopped in for lunch. wow.

first of all, this is the only place i've ever experienced that did bread, sweets and meals all equally well. you can watch the bakers cranking out some of the best bread ottawa has to offer. don't limit yourself to just one. they freeze well too.

i got the pulled pork taco and he got the steak sandwich. both were outstanding. i returned for a croissant (for him), a sticky bun (for me) and a cappuccino. even the coffee was crazy good. the croissant...is the best you will find in this city. it's perfection. really. and i'm *very* hard on bakeries that do them.

this is where you should go.

art is in my belly!. what is there possibly left to say about art is in bakery? if you haven't been yet just follow the hollandaise road! everything they make is nothing short of a masterpiece. breakfast, brunch, lunch, dessert - chevre which way you go its beyond satisfying.

space is an important concept in art, so make sure you have plenty in your belly before coming here! i have had the buttermilk brined chicken caesar, prosciutto, chicken curry, veggie guacamole melt sandwiches, breakfast croissanwich and countless desserts and breads. everything they create is nothing short of lip smacking, omg why did i wait so long to return, mouthwatering, pure, unadulterated deliciousness. bring a loaf of bread home with you, its the yeast you could do for the withdrawals sure to come tomorrow.

cumin through the rye, this place took the ottawa foodie scene to a whole other level... as well as the food porn industry. if you are a fan of art is inbakeryon facebook, you are willingly entering a friendship built on masochism. its absolute torture to see their daily creations displayed in your news feed, just calling to you and you cant help but jump up, throw over your desk chair sprinting down to city center salivating.

for the love of food, just go!

best bread in town!. art is in makes the best bread in town! their jalapeno and cheddar one is to die for... the industrialbakeryis not the warmest place to eat at, even though they serve a few lunch options; but it is definitely the place to go to pick up a fresh baguette.

amazing pastries!!! *updated and sandwiches. after seeing all of the great reviews we decided to pick some pastries for a family brunch - wow, they were really delicious and special. these aren't loblaws croissants or thatbakeryin the strip mall, these are serious pastries that don't mess around, they were a great hit. again, falling in line with all of the other comments you couldnt eat here everyday as we did enter somewhat of a sugar coma afterwards but it was well worth it...can't wait to go back and try their sandwiches!
also to note, service was friendly and the atmosphere was laid back but lively at the same time, definitely recommend it!!

we went their for lunch and today and totally yum. i had the buttermilk turkey ceasar sandwich and gosh the flavours explode on this sandwich - definitely satisfying and i was pleasantly suprised that it wasn't too heavy just the perfect portion. i did have the side salad but honestly the sandwich is enough for lunch unless your very very hungry but i ended up hardly eating the salad as the sandwich was satisfying enough. my hb had the steak sandwich which was good but after he took a bit of mine and likewise we agred the turkey was the way to go!! great spot for lunch!! it was busy but the line up wasn't that bad, it's constantly moving with a wait of 5-10, no worse than anywhere else and this was 12o'clock...we'll be back for sure :-)

sandwiches worth every penny. i went to art is inbakerytoday for lunch after reading and hearing glowing reviews. i was not disappointed. it was around 1 pm and the place was still pretty packed. i ordered the spicy crispy pickle melt and and almond croissant to go. service was friendly and everything looked just delicious. loaves of bread everywhere and the smell was wonderful.

the sandwich was on the pricey side - $8 - but man, was it worth it. it was fried battered pickles with a spicy sauce and cooked greens on a jalapeno cheddar bread. i ate it back at my office and no less than 3 people stopped by my desk to ask me what i was eating and where i had procured the delicious looking sandwich.

the almond croissant ($2.50) was dusted in icing sugar and was very flaky and baked to perfection. just the right amount of almond paste, it was really incredible.

everything else looks so good, i don't know what to try next time. nothing is cheap but you won't be disappointed.

greatbakeryand patisserie. i have always liked art-is-in for their great bread and sweets. almond brioche is too good, and dynamite white is a classic mix of salty/crispy/sweet - i could eat this breakfast/lunch/dinner.

head over after 5 and get stuff 1/2 price, and check facebook for daily menu and specials

problem/challenge now that these guys trying to be everything to everyone having expanded their menu well beyond the obvious; and not so obvious, bakeryfare to include: soup, sammies, brunch, burgers, etc - way too much for such a small and disorganized retail location!

if you want bread head over to bagelshop or herb and spice on wellington street for art-is-in breads at these retail partners or visit city centre location and wait in line while the guy in front of you waits 10 minutes for his 1 sandwich, or some old lady asks staff to explain every item and price on menu - zzzzz.

i would like to see proper and separate retail location - please.

art is in - amazing. when i first found art is in, based on the neighbourhood i had no idea what to expect. its a little bit out of the way in some respects, but this makes it sort of a treat to find. thisbakeryis in old industrial space, with a warm welcoming atmosphere. all the bakers, chefs, cashiers and servers seem to be happy and helpful, the small sitting area makes it hard to find a place to sit but gives a cosy family dinner feel. the sandwhichs are fairly simple, but much better for it. simple but phenominal, and very fairly priced. personally i would suggest one of the grilled cheese sandwhichs on the famous bread, and follow it up with a bowl of bread pudding. any of the booked goods are just wonderful and fresh, and i am particularly fond of the almond croissant. also a good plus to pick up the perfect loaf of bread! if your a bread lover of any caliber, give this place a try!

a humblebakeryon roids... i got one thought for you.. dynamite.

first impression, not the most accessible place in the world but the search for it was worth it. easily one of the city's best hidden jems, when i say hidden that is an understatement. located in the industrial park near bayview station..

what i devoured..
1. lobster on a roll - sweet lobster that wasn't overpowered by sauce. roll was on the dry side and i was expecting a larger sandwich for $12. may be my expectations are too high? hmmm.

2. holy bread.. cheddar, jalapeno! and chive bread. not for the low card diet, but for every happy carb devouring human it was heaven.

3. trio chocolate and almond cookie.. 30 percent cookie 70 percent chocolate and almond a ratio every cookie should strive for.

btw 1/2 off all bread an hour before close.
