shrimp tacos. love the sauteed shrimp tacos in lettuce wraps, and the patio is perfect in spring. nachos make a perfect meal, and the tres leches cake is the best dessert in charleston.

love love love. i love taco boy! my favorite is the grilled shrimp taco, but the best deal is the nachos-- huge plate of food! had the portobello quesadilla the other night, and it was amazing! the pineapple infused margaritas and the frozen screwdrivers are great. the patio is a greatplaceto gather with friends.

tres leches cake is a must. although taco boy is often "dinged" for having very small tacos (very small), share the nachos appetizer between two to four people, plus one or two tacos per person. that is more than enough food, and the nachos with the homemade cowboy beans and lots of cheese more than make up for the small size of the tacos. i usually switch the corn taco for flour, which is available upon request. highly recommend the grilled shrimp taco, but have never had a bad one. then end the meal with the most luscious tres leches cake ever. i'm a chocaholic, and the tres leches cake at taco boy is my favorite cake in the world, despite not having any chocolate! have never seen anyone dislike it, and most people moan in satisfaction when they taste it. fun atmosphere and high energy. great patio with fire pits for winter, and large roll-up windows for pleasant spring days. greatplaceto take a fun group of friends.

happy place. i commonly say that taco boy is my happyplaceand for good reason. the atmosphere is welcoming, fun and takes you to a whimsical foodie paradise. service can be slow during peek times but i often do not mind as the vibe is relaxed and i tend to stay for long periods of time anyway. this is not only a favorite for my friends and i but it is also a wonderful spot to bring out of town guests for a delicious meal and a certified good time!

taco boy is a fabulousplaceto eat. love the atmosphere but it's the first mexican restaurant where i had to pay for chips n salsa (no refills) the drinks are fantastic, strong with excellent flavor. the drinks alone would keep me coming back, until i saw that your allowed to bring your pet in the establishment to sit on your lap while you eat with paws on the table.

i don’t know why, but i’ve been on a serious taco kick lately. i’ve been craving them like crazy. so as such, i’ve tried pretty much every tacoplacein charleston. my favorite, by far, is taco boy downtown. not only are their tacos spectacular, the atmosphere is really freaking cool. the inside is all mismatched and looks like someone just put together a restaurant by stealing furniture from all of their neighbors. they also have an awesome patio that is what i see in my dreams when i think of the coolest possible patio there is. if you don’t like tacos, you should definitely come hang out just for the ambience. i also love their mismatched light fixtures and chandeliers. it’s just really cool. i don’t know why i love restaurants with mismatched furniture so much. to start, we usually get the appetizer trio consisting of salsa, queso, and guacamole (market price). their guac is killer. it’s so good. if you don’t want a whole trio appetizer, i definitely recommend getting the guac. unl

definitely worth a visit. while visiting my wife's sisters in charleston, we hit up the taco boy. the building is awesome and the weather was uncharacteristically nice so we sat in the outside patio area. despite the server spilling a couple of glasses of water on my sister-in-law, the meal was very good. i was put off at first that they don't serve hard taco shells but my soft tacos were excellent. the beer chalices and serving plates were so awesome that i was tempted to snatch up a few but didn't as i'm a law abiding citizen. check thisplaceout if you're in the area.

i don't think i agree with the one dollar sign meaning that the entree price is really higher than $10. example a taco salad with any meat is $11. most of the menu is al a carte which means once you pick your taco and side you will likely be above $10. family of four cost me $60, it's the most expensive mexicanplacei know. food for the most part is good (we like everything but the rice). service is good and judging by how many people were there they don't need to lower their prices because theplacewas packed. they have good atmosphere and the bar is very cool. great outdoor and indoor seating.

i'm on the fence.... i want to like this place. i really do. it looks like a coolplaceto have some drinks and chow down on some tacos. it should be relatively easy considering it's pseudo-hole-in-the-wall vibe. theplacemakes you feel like you've discovered something that only the locals know about.

i first tried it at the downtown location and, unfortunately, wasn't much impressed. it serves tacos. i get it. with a limited menu selection and a la carte items at around $3-$4 each i thought you'd get a little something more. i don;t know what i was expecting i guess.

i more recently tried the johns island location since it was the "original" from what i understand. again i want to like this place. i ordered two tacos - the vegetarian and the barbacoa. the barbacoa was delicious. lots of flavor and tender. it made my mouth water. the vegetarian was lame. i know it's an odd thing to order at a taco place, but if you're going to add it to your menu you better make sure it's good. whoever put it together threw some lettuce and tomato into the shell and called it a day. at $3 it was definitely not worth it - it could've been served more like a garnish.

will i try taco boy a third time? only if i'm hungry and craving that barbacoa.

good food, cool vibe.. this might be the bestplaceto dine outside in chucktown. great patio, great food, very good service. a buddy and i shared the sauce trio for an app. while a bit to lite in sauce qty, all three were very tastey. i had a chorizo taco, a grilled fish taco, chipotle slaw, and omg, do not miss the corn on the cob, elote frito. grilled and lightly cover with crumbled cheese, damn is this bad bot awesome!

more atmosphere than quality food. the food isn't bad, but it's not spectacular. the atmosphere, however, is fun and lively. it's a niceplaceto hang out.

neat lookingplaceto go. neat looking with all of the kitschie stuff all over theplacebut the food is overpriced and not very good. forty bucks for four tacos, guacamole and 2 liquor drinks. if the food was good, no problem, but it wasn't so problem.

worth a try. what taco boy is not:
1. authentic mexican.
2. overpriced (have you guys eaten anywhere in charleston? how much cheaper can you make a taco when its ingredients go beyond the basics?)
3. a five-star gourmet establishment.

taco boy is a great spot for happy hour, lunch, or dinner (sorry--never tried brunch). the general decor is clever and eco-friendly, and the ambience is sort of lively yet laid-back. yes, there are college kids (because some college kids are old enough to drink and all of them are old enough to eat), but there are also 30-something singles, parents with children, and everything else.

there aren't a ton of tourists (yay!) because it is, admittedly, in a sketchy area. don't leave anything of value in your car, and don't hang out unnecessarily by the side of the road. biking to this area at night seems imprudent to me, but i still see people doing it.

the service is generally okay--usually, great; other times, not so much. the food is very consistent. guac is awesome. considering you get a vat of it, i don't think it's too expensive. frankly, every mexican restaurant i've ever been to has better salsa, so don't feel bad about skipping it.

the taco boy salad (note: not to be confused with a taco salad, which isn't even on the menu) is fantastic. i order it frequently as a meal, and that's something i never do anywhere else. the slice of tres leches is huge, and the michelada (tex/mex style beer) is not to be missed.

this is a greatplacefor groups, with ample parking and long tables that can hold quite a crew.

give it a try. at least go for cocktails. and if you hate it, stay home. i'll be happy to take yourplacein the courtyard.

maybe the entire staff was still hungover from their halloween party the night before. not sure. this was the worst dining experience i have ever had. after waiting 15 minutes for a waitress to come over and take our drink orders and then at least 5 more to get our drinks andplaceour food orders, it took another 30 minutes to get our tacos. we were one of only five tables inside. maybe service outside is better. by the time we got our joke of a taco that didn't have what was on the menu in them and some of the wrong tacos, we were to hungry to send them back. we finally got a water at the end if the meal. they did take a few tacos off but that doesn't make up for the horrible service and long wait.
