stewby's seafood shanty

ordered for carry out and prepared quite fast. read reviews and must agree with the previous comments, grilled fish and grilled chicken tacos were delicious. flavorful meat combined withgoodtoppings. can not say the same thing about the fried shrimp sandwich. average bun with bland tasting shrimp coupled with cole slaw that just did not mesh well with the shrimp. overall,goodfood (with exception) and would eat here again.

awesome oysters!. recently, my husband got a take out order here and i jhave to say the oysters were awesome! just juicy and expertly breaded and fried. we would eat here a lot more if they offered beer...as we like (cold) beer with our seafood. so quite often we go somewhere else so that we can sip a few beers and hang out and eat over a longer period of time. as it is, this is more of a stop-in/quick eat kind of place -- a really really reallygooddrive thru. i just wish the atmosphere and adult drink menu reflected the quality of their food.

a perfect solid. there isn't anything fancy on the menu. nothing is unique or special, unless you've lived around here long enough to know places that serve extremely fresh seafood, simply but expertly prepared, at a very reasonable price and fast -- are indeed "unique and special"!!!

this is where the locals go for casual seafood if we aren't making it at home. (if our fishing trips have been unfruitful.) i've had everything on the menu, just about. it's all good. haven't had a single thing i didn't like, a lot.

some minor quibbles -- i wish the buns they used for the sandwiches could hold up to the moist coleslaw without going to mush after a few bites. maybe offering a po-boy roll for those who like a sturdier bite would be an option, while still appeasing the folks who prefer the standard roll. also, my mother doesn't like their fried fish because she likes crunch and is terribly afraid of any food being undercooked. (psst...don't eat the eggs at her house, or the pork chops, or the steak.) the fried fish here is lightly battered and fried just until it's cooked through, tender and lightly crispy. it's difficult to get thicker pieces of fresh fish *crunchy* because it's moist -- and i think it's kind of a crime to cook fresh fish to that point anyway. but, offering a "thin crispy fried" option would really make some older folks happy!! in any case, we eat seafood two places: my house and stewby's.

what a great little gem worth hunting to find.. we are not big fans of fried seafood and normally prefer grilled, baked or pan seared, but here we will make an exception. the food here is light and not greasy, cooked to perfection, and seasoned about right. living just an hours drive away, we usually go down to this area 3 or 4 times a year and like to seek out different restaurants. this one is worth the effort. don't go here expecting a sit down waitered meal with the ambiance flowing. this is just what the name implies, a seafood shanty. it is a small place with about 12 picnic style tables to sit at. you place your order at the window, and you pick your food up at the pick up window, if this place was located on the beach, it would have to be three times bigger to accomidate the crowds. even where it is located, it is very busy, and forgoodreason. this is certainly the best fried food that we have had in the area, and i would say, one of the better seafood restaurants in the area, just don't expect fancy. the prices are very reasonable, unlike most of the places around the beach area. don't miss this place if you are a fan ofgoodfood.

inconvenient for us (we live in destin) but, we finally tried this place for lunch. like an old florida fish camp. very good!goodsize portions at a decent price. very fresh.

awesome!. food was very good, probably more of a lunch place than dinner....but verygoodfood! only thing these guys lack is the availability of cold beer! i'd probably never go anywhere else. they only have outside covered seating if that's an issue for anyone....it shouldn't be!

my boyfriend and i love this place! it's always sogoodand fresh! except literally every time he eats the coleslaw, he throws up. but, of course, that won't stop us from going! just no slaw for him lol

just like most other reviews; the food was great and the staff is very friendly. keep in mind it's name includes the word 'shanty' and it is. it's a clean well run seafood shanty but you enter, stand in line, place your order, try to find a place to sit. we shared a table with a very nice elderly lady and had a nice conversation with her. she was a local and knew a lot about the history of ft. walton. they call your receipt number over the pa, you pick up and enjoy.
it was fun the food was good. i had the fried oyster platter, shhh, don't tell my doctor. oh, the sides are reallygoodtoo. i had fried okra and cheese grits. ha! i also had a cup of seafood gumbo that was delicious and healthy, right?
glad we went and if we are in ft. walton again we'll go back.

verygoodseafood.  very fresh and price was low.  i wasted so much money on other places before coming here.  we had to wait a while because we went during lunch.  the next day we came later and it wasn't so busy.

we tried stewby's tonight for the 1st time. reallygoodand would recommend to others to try. since we are on vacation we used zomato and it was spot on. amberjack grilled, cole slaw, hush puppies and okra all great!

love. we wanted a local place with fresh seafood, and that's exactly what we got! everything on the menu is delicious, fresh, and there's no such thing as a bad choice.goodfood paired with fantastic staff that knows what they're talking about, it's the perfect spot. highly recommended!

fish chasers. came from austin looking for the best seafood and have been chasing fish all week. this little place has out done them all! wonderful mahi and shrimp, great sides chased withgoodold southern iced tea! flagged it as a favorite in the brain, the stomach, and the gps... will make plans to be back!!

great food, decent prices. decided to try stewby`s after reading the reviews here on urban spoon. i was not disappointed. the name really describes it all. you eat at picnic tables on an enclosed porch that is air conditioned. the food was great though. the fish and shrimp were fried perfectly. the fish was fresh, moist, flaky, with a thin golden brown coating of batter. the shrimp were equally fresh and tender. the flavor of the shrimp was great, as we don't get fresh shrimp like that back home. the fried oysters weregoodtoo. this food was every bit asgoodas the food i had at dewey destins, but cost less, and the air conditioned porch was cooler than dewey`s humid, warm dining area (that's how it was when i went to dewey`s). like another reviewer said, get there early to get a table. we got there just after 6 on a friday evening, and almost all the tables were full.

awesome dinner. not on waterfront, but half the price of those that are. food is just asgoodif not better than the popular places. without the wait! i'll go back for sure.
