stewby's seafood shanty

awesome oysters!. recently, my husband got a take out order here and i jhave to say the oysters were awesome! just juicy and expertly breaded and fried. we would eat here a lot more if they offered beer...as we like (cold) beer with our seafood. so quite often we go somewhere else so that we can sip a few beers and hang out and eat over a longer period of time. as it is, this is more of a stop-in/quick eat kind of place -- a really really really good drive thru. i just wish the atmosphere and adult drink menu reflected the quality of their food.

a perfect solid. there isn't anything fancy on the menu. nothing is unique or special, unless you've lived around here long enough to know places that serve extremelyfreshseafood, simply but expertly prepared, at a very reasonable price and fast -- are indeed "unique and special"!!!

this is where the locals go for casual seafood if we aren't making it at home. (if our fishing trips have been unfruitful.) i've had everything on the menu, just about. it's all good. haven't had a single thing i didn't like, a lot.

some minor quibbles -- i wish the buns they used for the sandwiches could hold up to the moist coleslaw without going to mush after a few bites. maybe offering a po-boy roll for those who like a sturdier bite would be an option, while still appeasing the folks who prefer the standard roll. also, my mother doesn't like their fried fish because she likes crunch and is terribly afraid of any food being undercooked. (psst...don't eat the eggs at her house, or the pork chops, or the steak.) the fried fish here is lightly battered and fried just until it's cooked through, tender and lightly crispy. it's difficult to get thicker pieces offreshfish *crunchy* because it's moist -- and i think it's kind of a crime to cookfreshfish to that point anyway. but, offering a "thin crispy fried" option would really make some older folks happy!! in any case, we eat seafood two places: my house and stewby's.

may 4, 2012. nice clean restaurant with convenient take-out service. food was very good, served hot to order and tasted very fresh-no greasy fried food taste. will definitely return on next visit and will recommend to friends. enjoyed the localfreshcatch, white snapper fish-of-the-day!

excellent value. would like to see scallops on the menu.

all i can say is take my money! this place has the best seafood in fort walton period! i can't remember a single time i ate anything from here that didn't taste amazing.freshfish daily and everything cooked to order and cooked to perfection. if you are traveling through fort walton do yourself a favor and stop here you won't be disappointed.

wonderful, been in fort walton a week and easily the best food we have had. had the fish and shrimp, and if it wasn'tfreshcaught could have fooled me.

we went based on the reviews and were not let down. the cup of gumbo i had was very tasty and served piping hot. my wife really liked the shrimp and i enjoyed the platter (fish, shrimp and oysters). the food tastes reallyfreshand we would definitely go back. they will be opening a new location called scooters in navarre soon.

very good seafood.  veryfreshand price was low.  i wasted so much money on other places before coming here.  we had to wait a while because we went during lunch.  the next day we came later and it wasn't so busy.

the locals love this place!  everything grilled is marinated and not overdone, as most do. seafood not overcooked!  the tacos, shrimp, oysters, fish and soft shell crab are all wonderful!  this isfreshlocal seafood.  there is a difference!   if  they  had a dining room with white cloths, it would not be better.  if casual (very) bugs you, go elsewhere.  it is clean, great seafood,  and we love it!  the staff is great as well! picnic tables inside is just fine.

spot on reviews. bestfreshseafood we've had so far. reasonably priced too. grilled snapper was excellent. fried oysters top notch.

love. we wanted a local place withfreshseafood, and that's exactly what we got! everything on the menu is delicious, fresh, and there's no such thing as a bad choice. good food paired with fantastic staff that knows what they're talking about, it's the perfect spot. highly recommended!

freshest seafood around!. great little place for seafood. sofreshit was swimming this morning and they are taking out of coolers and fileting it right before your eyes! prices are very reasonable. you won't find any pre-made frozen battered seafood here :)

freshest around!!. this was our first visit to stewby's after hearing recommendations. i had the fried shrimp dinner and my husband ordered the seafood platter (with oysters, shrimp and fish- today's was amberjack). breading on the seafood/fish was light delicious. as we ordered we could see in the clean kitchen as they cook took afreshfish out of a cooler and then began to filet it for cooking. my husband said "that was probably swimming this morning"! all the staff are friendly and quick serving. a small restaurant so get there early and expect a beachy feel on the porch kind of dining. everything is cooked to order,freshand delicious!

great food, decent prices. decided to try stewby`s after reading the reviews here on urban spoon. i was not disappointed. the name really describes it all. you eat at picnic tables on an enclosed porch that is air conditioned. the food was great though. the fish and shrimp were fried perfectly. the fish was fresh, moist, flaky, with a thin golden brown coating of batter. the shrimp were equallyfreshand tender. the flavor of the shrimp was great, as we don't getfreshshrimp like that back home. the fried oysters were good too. this food was every bit as good as the food i had at dewey destins, but cost less, and the air conditioned porch was cooler than dewey`s humid, warm dining area (that's how it was when i went to dewey`s). like another reviewer said, get there early to get a table. we got there just after 6 on a friday evening, and almost all the tables were full.

great food for the write price. if you are just looking forfreshseafood that has a great taste, take the time and go the stewby's! no alcohol, but great gouper- very fresh. the seafood is mainly fried, but what other way is their to eat seafood.

great food!. if you live in or are visiting ft. walton this is one of those restaurants you have to eat at. my wife and i aren't seafood fans but we wanted to try out a greater variety of fish and seafood types. stewby's has excellent prices for seafood and excellent food. they serve whatever fish they can getfreshlocally so your fish choice is pretty limited but always fresh. we've been coming back and the fish does change, so we've been able to try several types of fish. it's always good though. we've tried almost all of the side and they have always been great too.

it's definitely a very casual dining experience so don't expect a fine dining seafood spot (just in case "shanty" didn't tip you off).

we really like the fish tacos, the bacon wrapped crab stuffed fried shrimp, the cheese grits, the baked beans, and the hush puppies. we didn't like the fried calamari or the seafood gumbo though.

stewby's is a must if you're in ft. walton!

best seafood in town!. this is the best seafood you could ever ask for. we usually get the seafood platter since it has a little of everything on it. everything i've had there is wonderful, from the fried okra to their coleslaw. the prices are reasonable considering the portions and quality i love the atmosphere, too. now whenever i need my seafood fix, it's stewby's. if you want good, down-home,freshseafood, this is the place to go. you can't go wrong with anything on their menu!

best seafood in fort walton!. i love the grilled fish tacos and fried fish. gumbo is yummy.freshand hot food. staff is really friendly. cool atmosphere. we are definitely regulars.
