really cute cafe with interesting, quality meals. coffee is easily the best in the manuka/kingston/kingston foreshore area. love their breakfast menu, poached eggs and pialligo bacon or their fruit toast are my go-to items. avo on toast is also great. i also think it's great that they do specials to keep it interesting.

nice vibe, friendly service and creative food. i had the soba noodles which was essentially a naked sushi roll. the monkey business smoothie was amazing. only downside is the hefty prices. there are credit card and weekend surcharges too so watch out. lunch cost me $40, a meal plus drink. definitely not undergraduate level.

our last brunch was at penny university, on a little suburban street of shops. the fitout was cute with a rustic and nanna sort of feel. unfortunately the food was nothing special, your standard breakfast that wouldn’t stand up against melbourne’s creative dishes. however, the iced tea presentation was a bit quirky!

i’ve been to penny university several times, but somehow haven’t gotten around to blogging about it until now. on this visit, i started with the tropical juice of pineapple, lychee and mint, which came out with a little cherry blossom flower on top (adorable!). the juice was the perfect size for breakfast and had plenty of flavour balance between the three ingredients. i opted for the breakfast special – za’atar spiced eggs with capsicum spread on turkish bread and minted yoghurt. my friend ordered the black forest ricotta hotcakes, and was told they would take 10 mins to cook. with great service, both our meals were brought out, hot, at the same time = awesome. these guys are pros. i was a bit disappointed to only have one egg, but excited to see that there was a whole land of salady things that i hadn’t expected – kale, fried chickpeas and baked eggplant. oh yum. the egg was perfectly runny and whilst i couldn’t really taste the za’atar (it’s amazing at local press), the capsicum spread was divine, and was perfectly complemented by the salad flavours and textures – tender eggplant, slightly crisped chickpeas. oh, and the turkish bread was easy to cut. fabulous experience all round!

penny university  is possibly the cutest venue in canberra. sure, it's a bit hipster, with the mismatched furniture and retro decor. check out the adorable animal decals on the wall!  it's a busy saturday morning and all the inside seats are taken; we manage to get a seat inside the enclosed courtyard area which was great as it was a chilly canberra morning and a tad too cold to brave the elements outdoors.  penny university menu the breakfast at penny university is on offer until 3pm - perfect for those lazy weekend brunches. macchiato latte the coffee at penny university is strong and smooth. just what the doctor ordered when waking up at a crazy hour to watch the balloon spectacular.  beignets there's a range of tempting baked goodies on the counter that are hard to resist, including the delicious beignets.  miso snapper ii the menu is imaginative and different to your usual stock standard breakfast options.  my mum and i opt for the miso snapper to share. the baked miso cod is topped on a toasted bagel with a fried egg, asparagus and corn puree. i enjoyed this dish immensely - the flavoursome charred corn and the perfectly cooked asparagus. it's not often you see fish (besides smoked salmon) on a breakfast menu, so it's a nice change. caramel and macadamia beignets these were heavenly!! not too sweet, and filled with little pieces of macadamia; it would have been even more amazing if these were served warm, but that is just a minor detail.  overall, i loved penny university and could not fault our breakfast here. i'm jealous of all these fabulous cafes and cool restaurants that are popping up in canberra - mental note to visit more often!

the burger i had was pretty adequate, definitely not amazing and could have done with more flavour. i would have also liked something other than ketchup to dip my chips in. something like aoli would've been perfect, but that's a personal preference; i know plenty of people like ketchup with their chips.

great breakfast. a bohemian treasure that serves great breakfast. my bircher muesli was a visual delight as well as being delicious. being wheat and dairy free was a very welcome bonus.

the place was abuzz when we arrived but despite how busy it was i was so impressed with how attentive and enthusiastic the servers were. i had the croissant french toast which was so decadent but absolutely delicious. bacon, french toast and bacon may be a common combo but there was something decadent about this version - probably the divine pialligo bacon!

really enjoyed our brekkie.
