amazing :). after a lot of people in canberra have been speaking aboutpennyuniversity i decided to take a friend for brunch
and try it out considering they have an amazing interesting all day breakfast menu.
at first sight the place looked so cute and welcoming with blankets placed outside on the miss matching chairs brought
a home like feeling to it. once in side there your struck by the interesting urban art painted all of the walls it really is such a nice touch. we were greeted by a lovely young lady who directed us to our table providing poured cold water and modern looking menu. our waiter returned on many occasions as my beautiful friend has a little trouble with great menus.
our meals we served within 10-15 of placing our order and looked absolutely devinely decorated just perfectly unfortunately i didn't snap any photos to show how wonderful the touch was. both our meals were perfect and we both had nothing but praise for this cafe. all on all it was a fantastic experience atpennyuniversity and i will be returning to this place time and time again one of the best if not the best cafe in canberra hands together.

find me better coffee and a better breakfast in canberra; i bet you can't!

penny university wins it by a margin when it comes to great coffee and even better food. located amongst several cafés in kingston, pennyuniversity easily grabs attention due to its sheer popularity. i have never driven by/ walked past this place and not seen a long queue of people waiting to be seated.

i remember going there first time with a group of 23 people and remember loving everything about this place! almost everything on the menu was on our table and not one person was disappointed with their food.

i am a huge fan and a regular customer of this cafe and would recommend trying out the various dishes on the menu.

a local favourite in kingston with ample street parking nearby.pennyuniversity open early (from 6'ish) for coffee although officially the kitchen is only open from 7am.

and the coffee is good. ristretto and espresso settings spot on with a deep, concentrated mouthfeel and flavour. the single origin of the day in a long black was silky, balanced. a lovely, light fruity acidity with a long medium cocoa finish.

open on a monday (some cafe's on the nearby kingston foreshore are not) and have the convenience of an all-day menu. so you fancy something different for breakfast? just do it! service was on par and polite for a cafe. table service if you're dining in. from watching the turnover even early in the week, it is obviously a popular local cafe. for good reason.

on a cold, wintery below-zero canberra winter, the wonton soup went down a treat. the broth light, not overly salty nor overpowering. the wonton's were generous with a sizeable, tasty pork filling. fresh shiitake mushrooms with a springy base of thin egg noodles. kept me warm and satisfied.

will drop by again and again.

i visitedpennyuniversity cafe with a friend for breakfast, which is a little unusual for me (the breakfast, not the friend). the shabby chic decor would appeal to mrs kan do, and it was busy and bustling, as it should be on a saturday morning.
we ordered the hash, which included among other things a fried egg over easy, pork fennel chilli sausage, bacon, potato, kale and tomatoes.
it was a lovely salty, spicy and tasty start to the day. a well made dish that was not too greasy.
the green tea we ordered had a lovely, mild flavour without a bitter after taste. not the best i've had, but pleasant.
as you can see from the photos, we did justice to the food.
still getting used to canberra prices though!

it wasn’t easy to pick just two choices to share for lunch atpennyuniversity, but the chilli scrambles $18 and the roasted cauliflower salad $23 were wonderful and  memorable dishes!. the chilli scrambles – eggs with fresh soy beans and shitake  mushrooms  scrambled in tau ban chilli and served with a  shallot pancake and bean sprout salad was spicy and delicious!

today we are visitingpennyuniversity in kingston. whenever i enter this place i feel like i am transported into the most hipster of hipster havens. i imagine it is somewhere in fitzroy, melbourne. like all good hipster cafes the decor is eclectic and fun, the coffee is amazing and the food is seriously over-complicated but also delicious. this is the home of quinoa, kimchi, matcha and even the grain of the moment, freekah. i do appreciate a lunch venue which serves food i would never attempt to do at home. i feel like i am getting value for money. let’s talk drinks first.

lovepennyuniversity for breakfast or lunch with seating outside and ample space inside with a moody vibe.

i've tried the breakfast hot dog is messy but delicious. the avo on toast and slow cooked egg are also delish. the fruit breakfast pudding is beautiful and fresh. the coffee is nice and the juice featured at the time was great. my favourite lunch dish is the duck pad thai (quack thai) . the meals are filling if a little pricey but you get what you pay for.

the only thing i can't recommend are the baked goods on the counter. several attempts have left me with dry and tasteless muffins despite their enticing appearance

finally got around topennyuniversity on one of my recent visits to canberra. this is a copybook definition of a great cafe - warm, cosy, attentive staff, super service, great brekkies and most importantly.. fabulous coffee.
i tried the zaataar eggs, a wonderful concoction of soft bolied eggs with zaataar, on a bed of sun dried tomatoes, chopped aubergine, roasted chickpeas, deep fried kale and some labneh.. there is also a small slice of turkish bread in the midst. on the whole, it was fantastic.
i also tried a latte, my standard of gauging how good a coffee is in any cafe. it was great, coffee freshly roasted with creamy milk.
overall, a great experience.. will certainly be back!!

one of the first meals we had during our weekend in canberra was atpennyuniversity cafe & coffee roasters in kingston. the cafe was super busy when we arrived, with people not only at the tables inside and out, but lining up for takeaway coffee and food as well! luckily we were able to snag a table straight away, and the staff were excellent despite the hubbub around them.

our last brunch was atpennyuniversity, on a little suburban street of shops. the fitout was cute with a rustic and nanna sort of feel. unfortunately the food was nothing special, your standard breakfast that wouldn’t stand up against melbourne’s creative dishes. however, the iced tea presentation was a bit quirky!

i’ve been topennyuniversity several times, but somehow haven’t gotten around to blogging about it until now. on this visit, i started with the tropical juice of pineapple, lychee and mint, which came out with a little cherry blossom flower on top (adorable!). the juice was the perfect size for breakfast and had plenty of flavour balance between the three ingredients. i opted for the breakfast special – za’atar spiced eggs with capsicum spread on turkish bread and minted yoghurt. my friend ordered the black forest ricotta hotcakes, and was told they would take 10 mins to cook. with great service, both our meals were brought out, hot, at the same time = awesome. these guys are pros. i was a bit disappointed to only have one egg, but excited to see that there was a whole land of salady things that i hadn’t expected – kale, fried chickpeas and baked eggplant. oh yum. the egg was perfectly runny and whilst i couldn’t really taste the za’atar (it’s amazing at local press), the capsicum spread was divine, and was perfectly complemented by the salad flavours and textures – tender eggplant, slightly crisped chickpeas. oh, and the turkish bread was easy to cut. fabulous experience all round!

penny university  is possibly the cutest venue in canberra. sure, it's a bit hipster, with the mismatched furniture and retro decor. check out the adorable animal decals on the wall!  it's a busy saturday morning and all the inside seats are taken; we manage to get a seat inside the enclosed courtyard area which was great as it was a chilly canberra morning and a tad too cold to brave the elements outdoors. pennyuniversity menu the breakfast atpennyuniversity is on offer until 3pm - perfect for those lazy weekend brunches. macchiato latte the coffee atpennyuniversity is strong and smooth. just what the doctor ordered when waking up at a crazy hour to watch the balloon spectacular.  beignets there's a range of tempting baked goodies on the counter that are hard to resist, including the delicious beignets.  miso snapper ii the menu is imaginative and different to your usual stock standard breakfast options.  my mum and i opt for the miso snapper to share. the baked miso cod is topped on a toasted bagel with a fried egg, asparagus and corn puree. i enjoyed this dish immensely - the flavoursome charred corn and the perfectly cooked asparagus. it's not often you see fish (besides smoked salmon) on a breakfast menu, so it's a nice change. caramel and macadamia beignets these were heavenly!! not too sweet, and filled with little pieces of macadamia; it would have been even more amazing if these were served warm, but that is just a minor detail.  overall, i lovedpennyuniversity and could not fault our breakfast here. i'm jealous of all these fabulous cafes and cool restaurants that are popping up in canberra - mental note to visit more often!

over the weekend i had brunch atpennyuniversity , i don’t know if brunch was particularly superb because of the fine company i was with or if the food was just amazing. may a little from column a and a little from column b. despite the heavy rain, everyone wanted to be atpennyuniversity . i was torn between two menu items (p.u. rarebit and mcpenny) as i always am, but the waitress said that the bagel was a new menu item and had been very popular. the breakfast menu atpennyuniversity, what would you have chosen? p.u rarebit gratined guinnes, leek and cheddar bagel finished with sauteed spinach and a poached egg and chilli jam ($17.00) added ‘pialligo’ bacon ($4.00) . this won’t be for everyone, it is very cheesy, rich and heavy but that is the sort of breakfast that i like. i like how both halves of the bagel had melted cheese on it, which one its own was nice but add a little of the chilli jam and it transforms into a heavenly bite. the pialligo bacon is a thicker cut but not overly salty and compliments the rest of the dish. juice of the day  pineapple, cucumber and … i want to say mint . i asked the waitress to repeat the juice of the day combinations and i still can’t remember what the third ingredient was, i just couldn’t get over the fact that there was cucumber in this drink, but oh my, it was a perfect combination! a wonderful mix of cold juice with refreshing flavours. everyone really wanted their coffee asap, it was a little slow to come out but it arrived before the food.   avo dish avocado on toasted dark, charred corn and quinoa tabouleh, chevre, chilli oil and a 65/65 egg ($19.00) . my super fit yummy mummy friend ordered this, i didn’t ask her how it was, but she ate everything so i assumed it was nice. cronut  mapl
