diner from sydney. a friend recommended thecoffeehere. true to his word, it was one of the best coffees i've had in a while. i've had alot of bad coffees lately and so it was easily noticeable the difference. i enjoyed the slight smokey bittercoffeeafter taste as realcoffeeshould. spent a week in canberra and became a regular visitor to the cafe. the meals were very nice, especially the breakfast. i would recommend the special of the day. i'm sure the chef had put alot of thought into it.

what a joke! they need to take the roasters part out of their name and stick to being a cafe.coffeewas tasteless and weak with no complexity to it. milk was over stretched and was scolding hot. as for breakfast the menu is a rip off for what you get and lacks imagination. there are far better places to go around kingston and manuka but this place is capitalizing on the hipster scene which is a joke in itself. don't go!

i'm a tough audience and i admit this. i was blown away by this spot. brekkie was the pretty average poached eggs with white beans on the side but it was delicious. the eggs are free range given the colour of the yolk but the beans left me wanting for more. simmered in tomato, onions and strips of red capsicum they were incredibly tasty. that combo is not always easy to bring to taste as it can (and in my experience has) be watery and sour! i could've eaten a bowl of that on my own. seasoned perfectly. the decor is hip and trendy. i was enthralled as i watched the beautiful men and women entering to eat. the menu was creative and 'but for' my air flight back i would've returned for lunch.coffeewas beautiful. i could taste it so it had that certain punch required. my only negative was the menu which was written in teeny tiny font. if you're over 40, have vision problems or just arrive in a de-caffeinated state you'll find it hard.

yum! i hope my next inter state meeting is scheduled for canberra again soon ...

find me bettercoffeeand a better breakfast in canberra; i bet you can't!

penny university wins it by a margin when it comes to greatcoffeeand even better food. located amongst several cafés in kingston, penny university easily grabs attention due to its sheer popularity. i have never driven by/ walked past this place and not seen a long queue of people waiting to be seated.

i remember going there first time with a group of 23 people and remember loving everything about this place! almost everything on the menu was on our table and not one person was disappointed with their food.

i am a huge fan and a regular customer of this cafe and would recommend trying out the various dishes on the menu.

a local favourite in kingston with ample street parking nearby. penny university open early (from 6'ish) forcoffeealthough officially the kitchen is only open from 7am.

and thecoffeeis good. ristretto and espresso settings spot on with a deep, concentrated mouthfeel and flavour. the single origin of the day in a long black was silky, balanced. a lovely, light fruity acidity with a long medium cocoa finish.

open on a monday (some cafe's on the nearby kingston foreshore are not) and have the convenience of an all-day menu. so you fancy something different for breakfast? just do it! service was on par and polite for a cafe. table service if you're dining in. from watching the turnover even early in the week, it is obviously a popular local cafe. for good reason.

on a cold, wintery below-zero canberra winter, the wonton soup went down a treat. the broth light, not overly salty nor overpowering. the wonton's were generous with a sizeable, tasty pork filling. fresh shiitake mushrooms with a springy base of thin egg noodles. kept me warm and satisfied.

will drop by again and again.

today we are visiting penny university in kingston. whenever i enter this place i feel like i am transported into the most hipster of hipster havens. i imagine it is somewhere in fitzroy, melbourne. like all good hipster cafes the decor is eclectic and fun, the coffee is amazing and the food is seriously over-complicated but also delicious. this is the home of quinoa, kimchi, matcha and even the grain of the moment, freekah. i do appreciate a lunch venue which serves food i would never attempt to do at home. i feel like i am getting value for money. let’s talk drinks first.

love penny university for breakfast or lunch with seating outside and ample space inside with a moody vibe.

i've tried the breakfast hot dog is messy but delicious. the avo on toast and slow cooked egg are also delish. the fruit breakfast pudding is beautiful and fresh. thecoffeeis nice and the juice featured at the time was great. my favourite lunch dish is the duck pad thai (quack thai) . the meals are filling if a little pricey but you get what you pay for.

the only thing i can't recommend are the baked goods on the counter. several attempts have left me with dry and tasteless muffins despite their enticing appearance

delicious breakfast. had the avo dish, which had a good serving of avocado, crunchy toast and a really tasty salsa made of quinoa, corn, tomato and cucumber. really fresh and well seasoned with chilli and lemon. good serving size. added bacon, which was cooked crispy and really good. food is presented really well - the french toast is particularly photo-worthy. decor is really cool with a vintage look of internal brick wall and cool styling. comfy feel. staff were all really friendly and service was quick at peak time on a sunday. quite loud inside, but the courtyard looked really cute and comfy too.coffeewas good, not amazing, but good enough. i like mycoffeea bit stronger and hotter.

my wife and i have had brunch at penny's on numerous occasions, there's no need to book but it can get very busy. they manage to fit a lot of people in their narrow cafe, maybe to many people... you will get quite familiar with the person sitting next to you when your butt is on their table whilst you struggle to get in and out. that's where the negativity stops and the glory starts. thecoffeeand the food are incredible, there's always something different on the menu that you wouldn't have tried and it's always cooked to perfection. the staff are friendly and very quick to take your order and the food comes out relatively quickly. if you're looking for different food and a good coffee, this may well be your place.

service was really friendly in a busy sunday morning. i ordered the chef's special of black rice porridge with salted coconut milk and roasted mango. it was very thai and really yummy and filling. the boyfriend ordered the other porridge with pudding and passion fruit. he liked it too but preferred my order when he tasted it. thecoffeewas really good too. would definitely dine again when i'm back in canberra, highly recommended!

finally got around to penny university on one of my recent visits to canberra. this is a copybook definition of a great cafe - warm, cosy, attentive staff, super service, great brekkies and most importantly.. fabulous coffee.
i tried the zaataar eggs, a wonderful concoction of soft bolied eggs with zaataar, on a bed of sun dried tomatoes, chopped aubergine, roasted chickpeas, deep fried kale and some labneh.. there is also a small slice of turkish bread in the midst. on the whole, it was fantastic.
i also tried a latte, my standard of gauging how good acoffeeis in any cafe. it was great, coffeefreshly roasted with creamy milk.
overall, a great experience.. will certainly be back!!

dropped in here when we found me and mrs jones closed for renovations.  very busy on an early sunday morning on the way to the snow.  excellent service and the food was fabulous for adults particularly the avo dish with quinoa.  not much on the menu for children, however they did accommodate with with some sour dough toast.  coffee was excellent and overall it was a great buzzy enviroment.
