diner from sydney. a friend recommended the coffee here. true to his word, it was one of the best coffees i've had in a while. i've had alot of bad coffees lately and so it was easily noticeable the difference. i enjoyed the slight smokey bitter coffee after taste as real coffee should. spent a week incanberraand became a regular visitor to the cafe. the meals were very nice, especially the breakfast. i would recommend the special of the day. i'm sure the chef had put alot of thought into it.

amazing :). after a lot of people incanberrahave been speaking about penny university i decided to take a friend for brunch
and try it out considering they have an amazing interesting all day breakfast menu.
at first sight the place looked so cute and welcoming with blankets placed outside on the miss matching chairs brought
a home like feeling to it. once in side there your struck by the interesting urban art painted all of the walls it really is such a nice touch. we were greeted by a lovely young lady who directed us to our table providing poured cold water and modern looking menu. our waiter returned on many occasions as my beautiful friend has a little trouble with great menus.
our meals we served within 10-15 of placing our order and looked absolutely devinely decorated just perfectly unfortunately i didn't snap any photos to show how wonderful the touch was. both our meals were perfect and we both had nothing but praise for this cafe. all on all it was a fantastic experience at penny university and i will be returning to this place time and time again one of the best if not the best cafe incanberrahands together.

really wanted to like this place since it was my first time brunching incanberrabut the dish i ordered was way too salty (pialligo hash) and the hot drinks arrived at our table cold. the chai bonsoy tasted really weird but the other dishes were okay. would not return. what made it worse was the lack of service, it was as if we had to jump up and down for attention to have someone take our order, mostly because the waitress was having a good chat with the baristas half the time. imagine being a part of that chat and talking about our orders.

i'm a tough audience and i admit this. i was blown away by this spot. brekkie was the pretty average poached eggs with white beans on the side but it was delicious. the eggs are free range given the colour of the yolk but the beans left me wanting for more. simmered in tomato, onions and strips of red capsicum they were incredibly tasty. that combo is not always easy to bring to taste as it can (and in my experience has) be watery and sour! i could've eaten a bowl of that on my own. seasoned perfectly. the decor is hip and trendy. i was enthralled as i watched the beautiful men and women entering to eat. the menu was creative and 'but for' my air flight back i would've returned for lunch. coffee was beautiful. i could taste it so it had that certain punch required. my only negative was the menu which was written in teeny tiny font. if you're over 40, have vision problems or just arrive in a de-caffeinated state you'll find it hard.

yum! i hope my next inter state meeting is scheduled forcanberraagain soon ...

clearly the best morning brekky place incanberratill now.started with chai latte, hot choco and piccolo; followed by pialligo hash, ponzu confit salmon and the best tau ban chilly breakky dog.
the flavours in this place are absolutely to die for and with each bite you have you become a bigger fan of the dish.
its has a very cozy ambience with those knitted quilts which added to the whole experience.
must go when in canberra..

a local favourite in kingston with ample street parking nearby. penny university open early (from 6'ish) for coffee although officially the kitchen is only open from 7am.

and the coffee is good. ristretto and espresso settings spot on with a deep, concentrated mouthfeel and flavour. the single origin of the day in a long black was silky, balanced. a lovely, light fruity acidity with a long medium cocoa finish.

open on a monday (some cafe's on the nearby kingston foreshore are not) and have the convenience of an all-day menu. so you fancy something different for breakfast? just do it! service was on par and polite for a cafe. table service if you're dining in. from watching the turnover even early in the week, it is obviously a popular local cafe. for good reason.

on a cold, wintery below-zerocanberrawinter, the wonton soup went down a treat. the broth light, not overly salty nor overpowering. the wonton's were generous with a sizeable, tasty pork filling. fresh shiitake mushrooms with a springy base of thin egg noodles. kept me warm and satisfied.

will drop by again and again.

i visited penny university cafe with a friend for breakfast, which is a little unusual for me (the breakfast, not the friend). the shabby chic decor would appeal to mrs kan do, and it was busy and bustling, as it should be on a saturday morning.
we ordered the hash, which included among other things a fried egg over easy, pork fennel chilli sausage, bacon, potato, kale and tomatoes.
it was a lovely salty, spicy and tasty start to the day. a well made dish that was not too greasy.
the green tea we ordered had a lovely, mild flavour without a bitter after taste. not the best i've had, but pleasant.
as you can see from the photos, we did justice to the food.
still getting used tocanberraprices though!

had an excellent breakfast this morning with quality coffee and avocado on toast which was bursting with flavour. as a newbie tocanberrai haven't been able to get avo on toast anywhere (i thought it was in the vibe of the constitution that it had to be served). anyways, highly recommended and outstanding service too.

one of the first meals we had during our weekend incanberrawas at penny university cafe & coffee roasters in kingston. the cafe was super busy when we arrived, with people not only at the tables inside and out, but lining up for takeaway coffee and food as well! luckily we were able to snag a table straight away, and the staff were excellent despite the hubbub around them.

penny university  is possibly the cutest venue in canberra. sure, it's a bit hipster, with the mismatched furniture and retro decor. check out the adorable animal decals on the wall!  it's a busy saturday morning and all the inside seats are taken; we manage to get a seat inside the enclosed courtyard area which was great as it was a chillycanberramorning and a tad too cold to brave the elements outdoors.  penny university menu the breakfast at penny university is on offer until 3pm - perfect for those lazy weekend brunches. macchiato latte the coffee at penny university is strong and smooth. just what the doctor ordered when waking up at a crazy hour to watch the balloon spectacular.  beignets there's a range of tempting baked goodies on the counter that are hard to resist, including the delicious beignets.  miso snapper ii the menu is imaginative and different to your usual stock standard breakfast options.  my mum and i opt for the miso snapper to share. the baked miso cod is topped on a toasted bagel with a fried egg, asparagus and corn puree. i enjoyed this dish immensely - the flavoursome charred corn and the perfectly cooked asparagus. it's not often you see fish (besides smoked salmon) on a breakfast menu, so it's a nice change. caramel and macadamia beignets these were heavenly!! not too sweet, and filled with little pieces of macadamia; it would have been even more amazing if these were served warm, but that is just a minor detail.  overall, i loved penny university and could not fault our breakfast here. i'm jealous of all these fabulous cafes and cool restaurants that are popping up incanberra- mental note to visit more often!

not a fan. i've been to penny university a few times now, twice for lunch and once for breaky and i wouldn't recommend it.
while the menu is interesting, there isn't enough to choose from, particularly the lunch menu.
each time i sat inside, as it'scanberraand its cold outside, and i froze the entire time. the heating inside is terrible and doesn't compensate for the front door contantly being open. i wouldn't recommend going in winter, it completely ruins your experience.
also, they take bookings however when we called to make a booking for breakfast they said they didn't take bookings. when we asked why they take them for lunch and not breaky, we weren't given an answer. not only did i find that extremely rude but i also thought it was just plain pathetic, not to mention terrible customer service. either take bookings for anytime of the day or don't take any, they can't have it both ways it just doesn't work!

pretty average, but at least you don't pay $25 for breakfast. had the 'avo dish' for breakfast. was hardly any goats cheese or chilli oil and hence the dish was basically bland and flavourless. the eggs were meant to be poached but were basically raw. at least they weren't over cooked. $17 and still hungry after eating this. the cazuela was flavoursome and filling and the bread was good (but they should give you at least one more slice). but as far ascanberragoes, the price was reasonable at $16 and was quite filling.
the cappuccino was covered (and hence ruined) in pure, super bitter, cocoa powder!?! why would you do that? the chai latte was overwhelmingly sweet.
on the upside, you never run out of water. staff were helpful but not particularly friendly or cheerful (typical for canberra), but the service was pretty quick. won't be going back in a hurry.
