over the past several months, going to chuy’s has been hit and miss on both the service and the food. we had been going to chuy’s every few weeks; we loved their tres leches and beef tacos. the front of the house staff is very rude, and more interested in themselves than the patrons. the waiters are fine, nothing exceptional, mostly high school kids that have better things do than their job. they also don’t give you appetizer plates (it’s like pulling teeth to get one, if they want my cheese dripping all over the table that’s fine with me…)

but mostly, it’s the front of the house where the problem lies. for example, we came in and asked for a booth. nobody else was waiting, just me and my husband. the lady said ‘it will be a moment’ we said ok and stepped back and waited. a woman and her three kids come in, ask for a booth, and they’re immediately seated. we asked what happened to our table, and they gave us a ‘oh these people again’ look, and said ‘it will be a minute’. we wait patiently, and another group walks in, ask for a booth, and are immediately seated. we thought it was a prank at first, but alas, we asked again about our booth and how we’ve been overlooked twice, and they acted annoyed with us. they finally take us to our seat and that same lady sits us down at a table, not a booth. i see a clean booth next to the table, and i say “we are sitting in this booth” very matter of fact, sorry not sitting at a table after all that mess. she kind of snorted at us and said “fine!”, gave us a snicker, and then proceeded to go back to the front and talk about it with her comrades. laughing and giggling ensued. there’s too many ‘hostesses’ and none of them seem to communicate or coordinate with each other, it’s amazing they find their way to work every day.

so after that surreal and disheartening encounter on our last visit, we decided we weren’t coming back to dine, but we would order take-out. well, that’s a fine idea until you’re put on hold and then disconnected three times in a row. so i guess they don’t want us to come back in any capacity, and we are happy to oblige.

get it together, chuys. seriously rethink your front of the house employees and whomever claims that they ‘manage’ them. there’s a company culture of mediocrity that needs to be addressed. ted’s is right next door and arguably much better than your establishment; don’t push your patrons elsewhere. there’s no hope for us, even though we want your beef tacos and tres leche cake, you make it impossible to be a repeat customer.

chuy's is mexican with a twist (or a bit of kink if you prefer).

they have a nice patio which they actually use much of the year.

they have the usual mexican fare but usually stepped up a bit. they also have their kink - like the elvis green chile fried chicken. from their menu: "a chuys original. a tender chicken breast breaded with lays potato chips, deep fried and smothered in green chile sauce and cheddar cheese. served with green chile rice and refried beans".

the two combo plates are excellent and showcase several items. just have them hold the 'smokey chipotle sauce' on the flautas. the flautas are really good - but the sauce is a total travesty.

the rellenos are good as are the fajitas in whatever species you prefer.

be sure to try the creamy jalapeño ranch with your chips. it has tons of finely diced mild jalapeños swimming in the ranch dressing. so good!

they also offer hatch pepper sauce. it too is great on chips but you may find it more than a bit spicy. being a beef broth based sauce it has interesting undertones.

i'm actually commenting on the new nlr location. we liked it but didn't love it! surprised at what they didn't have. no fresh guacamole made at the table and our guest was disappointed they didn't have salmon. our platters of food were generous but pretty standard fare. other mexican restaurants have better food.

great mexican lunch today. was shopping in the area and stopped by for lunch just before noon. glad we chose that time as the place was packed by 12:30. was seated promptly and had a great waiter. he answered every question we had. bought us chips and three differ dips. one was too spicy for my spouse so he brought another that was greatly “toned down”. the chips were warm and as thin as could be. the salsa and chips were the best. ordered the tortilla soup, since they did not offer caldo. i was told the soup was the best next thing to caldo. they brought out a really large bowl that was steaming hot and filled with chicken, cheese, avocado, corn, carrots and other veggies. the soup was excellent and getting though a bowl took a little time. on the side were two hot tortillas. my spouse ordered the chicken taco salad which was crisp greens and a lot of white meat chicken. she advised it too was delicious. our glasses were kept topped off and we could not have ask for a better waiter. the prices are a little more than one might expect for lunch at a mexican restaurant in this area, but the food was well worth the small extra cost. chuy’s actually looks like a mexican restaurant from south of the boarder. parking around the restaurant is at a premium and there is limited parking on the street. this was one of the best lunch meals at a mexican restaurant we have had in a vey long time.

very disappointing!. took the family to eat for dinner, and although the wait staff was very friendly and attentive the lack of quality in the food was too much to over look. this restaurant should not be classified as "mexican food" it is horrible! the carne guisada had the flavor close to wolf brand chili from the can, the fajitas had a strange flavor not beef...the rice tasted like heb frozen rice, queso was so salty and over spiced it was not edible. maybe this is why the indoor lighting is so dim? maybe you have to be drunk to enjoy this food or have your sinuses clogged?? overall it was a disaster we paid our bill and learned a lesson. given the atmosphere and location on north 281&1604 and the high priced menu items you would expect to get something alot better...one would think but no. we should have gone to chacho's atleast we would have been satisfied.

finally a decent texmex restaurant. moving from texas to okc i miss the abundance of amazing texmex restaurants. i ate at chuys in texas many times and i would say it's average to above average for texas standards. however, now living in ok, it's at the top of my list. for whatever reason, many people here associate free cups of powdered queso and tortillas as being the "best" texmex food, im certain you know the other texmex restaurant i'm referring to. chuys has amazing salsa fresca and creamy jalapeno ranch. the queso is just ok and the tortillas are excellent. while they do have hatch green chile dishes available in season, i hardly label chuys as new mexico style mexican food. queso and fajitas are texmex...try ordering queso at traditional, new mexico or baja mexican establishments and you will be served a plate of grated or melted cheese, not queso. all in all, you won't be dissapointed in the food. as far as service goes, i always give restaurants a few shots if the food is good. while i've never had bad service here, it's bound to happen sooner or later as most servers/hostesses are college aged kids no pursuing a career in waiting tables.

creamy jalepeno sauce. omg. i basically go here to drink the creamy jalapeno sauce. i order a giant container to go. i pour it on everything. food wise, not everything is great. my go-to plate is steak fajitas. the meat is really good and i've never been disappointed in them. i once ordered the tortilla soup and was very disappointed. not at all what i had in mind.

waited and waited. waited at the front to be seated took forever and they weren't even busy. finally got a seat and drinks. waited 20 min and still no service after the server walked by multiple times helping everyone else. (total of 5 tables full). so we left angry of course and still hungry. gm came out to talk to us and was very nice and seems like he will take care of the issue hopefully

so good - love chuy's. this is the original chuy's in dallas before they opened the others further north. the eclectic funky decor is fun. they have palm trees, half a car, dog pictures, and holiday lights that make the atmosphere. their food is very good. i was lucky enough on this visit to hit their hatch green chile festival. it only lasts three weeks per year during the harvest. i had the macho burrito. the pork was tender and fell apart. the hatch chile salsa mixed perfectly. awesome stuff!
