st. augustine's

ahhh st. augustine's... you gotta love a bar that semi-parodies a catholic church. well at least i do. i had drinks here with a close friend on his recommendation and i was certainly not disappointed! i knew i was in for a treat considering the place was packed on a monday night.  it took us both roughly 20 minutes or so just to get a table.  great beer and drink selection, i particularly liked the irish black stout that i ordered. the poutine i had wasn't overly greasy or smothered in gravy like most poutines. my s/pwingswere on par withwingsfrom cactus. though i have to admit i felt a bit cheated not getting the meatloaf my friend did (it looked amazing).  service was friendly and fast, the only trouble we really had was flagging down a server given how busy the place was at the time. food portions were generous, reasonably priced, and good quality. what more can you ask for in a bar really? st. augustine's its safe to say you have a new convert and he will definitely be back!

my boyfriend's coworker had a birthday party at st. augustine's bar. the bar is located on commercial dr. nearby commercial boardway skytrain station. it is a great place to go for the birthday party. people can eat dinner and watch the game at the same time. we've ordered nachos, chickenwingsand the 4 beers flights since lots of people ordered them. it's a great thing to try all the popular food in this bar.

i was craving for chickenwingswhile i was in my way to downtown so i had to pick a quick recall from my memory of the places that are on top of my list in terms of chicken wings, and was using the app for awhile and hey found this place inwingsand beer and they have quite a high rating as well...

so went down from the commercial and broadway station and walked for abit and reached the place :) the place is totally commutable and a good spot to meet up with friends definitely. went there on lunch time on weekdays and yes i had to try most of the chicken wings, so with 5 options available and able to order half order i'm very satisfied with that, i went with 4 different flavors.

i find out a few things in common about the chicken wings... they are a bit dry, and the sauce is just decent... hopefully is just an off day for them in terms of cooking the chicken wings... other than that i don't think it's worthy to be called one of the better chickenwingsin vancouver in my personal opinion :d

but other than that it was quite slow, and the servers are okay although they can used a little more help as it seems like she's overwhelmed by the number of people she needs to serve. :) but it's all good.

thewingsjuicyness and tenderness of thewingsi'll give it a horrible 1.75 unfortunately and the sauce a 2. the memory that i left from the place from having a high expectation fell down quite bad... :(( hopefully it's only a hiccup from them

we were informed wednesday was thewingsnight. only $5 per pound? how could we resist such an offer? justine ordered salt and pepperwingsas a lady always does not want to get too messy over too saucy. :) i went for the exotic choice of tamari ginger wings. wow, they were both really good! i just realized it had been a while since i enjoyed good pub chicken wings. salt and pepperwingswere fried and seasoned perfectly, and they didn’t taste dry at all. tamari gingerwingswon me over with the tons of great flavours: sweet and savory and spicy. and i had sauce all over my fingers but i just didn’t care and kept eating. i kind of wish they could have offered finger bowl or wet tissue, but i probably shouldn’t be complaining because thewingswere so delicious.

i really enjoyed this chicken wings. they had the right amount of bbq on them and they were tasty. thewingswere the right size not too tiny or over-sized.

unfair treatment. in short:
this place is defin not worth the wait, over priced and so-so food. good selection of beer but there are other places for that too. stupid waitress and/or possibly was at the end of an act of racism but i'm really hoping these waitresses are above that, this is vancouver.... never coming back again

this is why:
our party wanted to go to st aug. forwingson wed night. we've been here more often maybe a year ago and didnt have an issue making a rsvp or getting a table for a large group when we just stopped by but last night was just ridiculous. we called in earlier to make a rsvp but they said they did not accept rsvps for after 6pm . we got there before 6:30 and was told there were 5 groups ahead of us. okay, we knew it was gonna be a wait. maybe 20min in, they called in all the other groups before us already (including a group of 10). we're still left outside waiting. other people walked by us to put their name down and was soon called in as well. we look inside (because we had to wait outside in the freezing cold for a table) and see a long table empty for 1/2 hr already. we asked about that table and they said we're next in line and the'yre just setting up the table now. 10min later, they let another big group in and they settled down at that table. we've been waiting outside for about 50min now. and during this time, other groups of 3s and 4s get called in ahead of us. i finally decide to go inside to ask what's going on. they said we're basically waiting for the original group of 10 that was ahead of us to leave before we will get seated. i'm not sure how these waitresses are trained but that has got to be the stupidest way to organize seating ever. 1) they obviously do take rsvp because another group that came at 7pm took a table that has been empty for a long time. 2) waitress doesn't understand the concept of first come first serve or the idea of putting ur name down on a list and going down that list. there were tables that were freed within a couple min of each other but they decided to bypass us and give it to 2 separate parties.

food - meh. i was really disappointed in thewingsi bought, truly the worstwingsi have ever had. they tasted burnt and were the smallest i have had i think ever. service was at best so-so at the bar. the beer was pretty good, i would go back to have a beer with a friend but i will definitely grab a slice at uncle fatihs across the way before i come here next time!

don’t go for the wings. we did and regretted it. they were among the scrawniest driest buffalowingsi've ever had. one of the drumettes could have come from a quail (an older one at that). they have a substantial selection of beer, but when asked for a taste of one of their more esoteric brews the server informed us that there was a law against giving away free alcohol. either this is a “law” unique to this establishment or they are the only ones that abide by it

great beer - mediocre food.. i have been to this place quite a few times- amazing beer list that is always rotating. which is great but they always seem to rotate my favorite ones rather quickly.
a few of my friends are not beer drinkers and their wine list is not amazing in the slightest - so when i go out with them we tend to not come here.

i also just need to vent about their menu. while pub food is pub food - and natchos andwingsare easy and great on certain days - i just have to say that their menu is not very inventive and does not really change much. i have a lot of friends with different dietary restrictions - which in this day and age are abundant and should already be accounted for on menus - and it is nearly impossible for them to get a decent meal at this establishment. there are literally no gluten free options - even their salads have deep fried breaded objects - which sure you can get without but then your salad consists of lettuce. my friend said "this is not acceptable for a popular place on commercial drive" and i agree. i eat everything - but it's nice to have some healthy and interesting menu items and options - which this place clearly does not have.

all in all it is a great pub, great servers - i have had lots of laughs with some of the girls but they desperately need some new menu items. until then we will eat somewhere nicer then come for the beer - unless of course we are wanting greasy pub food.

cool commercial drive bar, one of the better ones. has a bunch of tvs which was awesome for the fights. the menu coild be deemed a bit simple but the chickenwingsand sicilian pizza were great. tomato sauce, prosciuto, and seasonings were awesome on the pizza, and being a beer lover.... i cant complain with the 40+ beers on tap

great wings. we just started going here for wing wednesdays. thewingsand service are good, friends like the beer selection.
