great food. dinner was great - the staff provided us with great service, the food was excellent - including the vegan meal i had requested. the only thing that could have been better is parking in the area.

we went for our anniversary . it was our first visit to open range , and definitely will not be our last . the atmosphere was beautiful and the presentation of our food gorgeous . i must also add the restaurant itself was very clean . also very important to me the restrooms were immaculate with really cute special touches to make you feel very comfortable . the service was exceptional ! our server "andy" was polite and friendly , and very knowledgable about all the food and beverages . we would recommend this restaurant 100% a true 10/10 ! thank you for such a wonderful dining experience and great evening out !

good food but boring atmosphere. had dinner there on a quite tuesday. nice interior, friendly and professional service. really good beer, wine, cocktail menu - lots of unique choices and priced fairly.
for dinner we had the corn and jalapeno fritters and the prime rib feature. the fritters were ok - the flavour was good but i don't think the tomatillo dipping sauce complimented the fritters.
our prime rib was serviced with duck fat poutine, beets and a yorkshire pudding. the yorkshire pudding was stale and the poutine disappointing. they used au jus instead of gravy in the pountine so it was similar to french fry soup.
the prime rib was amazing - i would order it again and just opt for a different side.
nice decor, good food, great staff but the atmosphere was pretty boring.

i went to open range a few weeks back for a belated birthday dinner with my family.  it was a cold and snowy weekend, but we bundled up and headed out in hopes of having a great meal. first off, my parents were not fans of the chairs.  they found them too low to be comfortable and as my mom put it, “more suited for people who want to sit and have a few drinks”.  then again, my family’s chinese so my parents aren’t usually the type who want to kick back with a few drinks and spend hours at a restaurant.  plus, we’re all on the short side so that might have factored into the chairs being so low.  still, i found the setting to be really cozy and i can see it being great for a romantic evening or just a great place for a few friends to gather. we started off with a few drinks.  my mom and i got the orange blossom lemonade pictured on the right and my sister got an italian soda in raspberry.  the lemonade didn’t have any kind of orange blossom flavour to me and was very sweet.  i like my le

open range is the sibling of big fish. next door and owned by the same restaurant group. i love big fish; i think i would expect the same from this restaurant. when we arrived, we were the only other party in the room. i’m guessing monday nights are a bit slow. i started with the wild mushroom soup. it was thick and full of flavour. the elk “dianne” was lovely. deep, meaty flavor balanced by the acidity and sweetness of the red currant demi glace.  i choose the rice pilaf instead of the potato.  the green beans were young and crisp; the parsnip and onion were tender. hubby really enjoyed his corn and jalapeno fritters, the beef tenderloin and the dessert. the service was attentive and friendly. open range is to the land what big fish is to the sea. i love seafood; so i prefer big fish, but open range definitely is a home run. feature sheet wild mushroom topped with mustard red frill and topped with cold pressed canola oil corn and roasted jalapeno fritters with tomatillo buckwheat hone

we came here for a friend birthday as he wanted to try out open range. they had a select menu which ranged from steak, chicken to fish. i ordered the elk steak medium rare (tender, lean and gamey) which also came with a side of vegetables (squash and wild rice). overall food here is delicious with good quality. i'd recommend trying this place out.

straightforwardly in my opinion the best restaurant in calgary. the food is amazing, the combinations interesting and thoughtful. the staff is wonderful and there seems to be little turnover- a good sign. these folks have gone above and beyond to accommodate us - once regarding a friend, dying of cancer, not able to eat much, but so wanted to have a last meal there. they provided a series of small portions to allow her a wide range of all her favourites. we are steady customers and will continue to be.

food and service were excellent. we had the game platter, lamb shank, bison flank steak and duck. nice seating, cozy vibe and not too noisy. thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will definitely visit again.

this is probably going to be one of the most biased reviews i’ve ever written. don’t get me wrong - the place is great! the restaurant next door (big fish dockside) is owned by the same people, and it’s my favourite in the city. open range would’ve been a solid 5.0 if it weren’t for the country music on the background. i get it, we’re in alberta, and it is a steakhouse, but country music is, for the most part, the genre you either love or absolutely cannot stand. like i said, it is my personal preference, and the majority of albertans will likely not mind that at all, i simply wouldn’t go if i knew they played country. we were the only customers at the time and asked to turn the music down or change it. they politely apologized and said that they couldn’t change the music. again, we had no problem with that. the place decides the atmosphere, we weren’t there to reinvent their identity. there was some old school blues mixed in with the country, which solved the issue for me.

aside from the ambiance, the place is great - delicious food, knowledgeable staff, great selection of cocktails. would definitely recommend to anyone who doesn’t mind occasional country on the background.

the beef tenderloin is to die for. legitimately one of the best things i have ever eaten in calgary. i have never tried anything here other than the tenderloin so i can't comment on other menu items. in conclusion get the tenderloin.

good -- extremely good, in fact. borderline excellent. but boring. imagine your moms pot roast with mashed potatoes and greens that actually taste like something other than broiled cardboard. scalloped potatoes? comforting, sure. but that's the kind of stuff granny makes. it's still mom's food, something you get on sunday after church. definitely not something i really want to pay $30+ a plate for, not including wine. this isn't food that's going to get me ahem, lucky if you know what i'm saying, unless i want my socks darned. i want a little more excitement for the money.

i chose open range as a venue for one of our social club ‘dinner in the city’ events. i’d been to open range a few times before so i know the quality of the food was great, the service was pleasant, and the ambience of the restaurant was nice for a social event. we booked the wine room in the back of the restaurant. the room has a maximum of 32 people, and we ended up with only 20. with two tables of 6 and one table of 8 it was actually quite cozy and it turned out well.

best steak i've hard in years! i had the beef sirloin and my husband had the special chipotle steak; they were both awesome. excellent service, rustic decor and top notch food make this little steak house that could stand out. i will be back and highly recommend open range to anyone looking for a delicious local steak.

we had the porterhouse to share - 24 oz steak, scalloped potatoes and asparagus - it was probably the best steak dinner i have had in calgary. i loved it. the service was great too. will definitely be back. we tried the sourdough garlic cheese bread and tho it was good it was quite heavy and i could have done without that before the amazing main course.
