this is probably going to be one of the most biased reviews i’ve ever written. don’t get me wrong - the place is great! the restaurant next door (big fish dockside) is owned by the same people, and it’s my favourite in the city. open range would’ve been a solid 5.0 if it weren’t for the country music on the background. i get it, we’re in alberta, and it is a steakhouse, but country music is, for the most part, the genre you either love or absolutely cannot stand. like i said, it is my personal preference, and the majority of albertans will likely not mind that at all, i simply wouldn’t go if i knew they played country. we were the only customers at the time and asked to turn the music down or change it. they politely apologized and said that they couldn’t change the music. again, we had no problem with that. the place decides the atmosphere, we weren’t there to reinvent their identity. there was some old school blues mixed in with the country, which solved the issue for me.
aside from the ambiance, the place is great - delicious food, knowledgeable staff, great selection of cocktails. would definitely recommend to anyone who doesn’t mind occasional country on the background.
