really dissapointing. i got the bison burger, really dry, which was a huge dissapointment. i thought it was a safe bet. the 'salad' was greens with some sauce. bit of a joke. it seems the ingredients were good but the execution was bad. the dessert was ok, goat cheese cheesecake. but for 75$ i could have gone somewhere else and enjoyed it way more.

good food - happy guests. atmosphere was amazing as well as the food. one of the most surprising things encountered here were the guests - they were happy, interactive, spoke to us from two different tables randomly throughout the meal. the surprising best dish - the onion scallop potatoes. everyone appeared happy and satiated. lighting was romantic. albeit service was slow, it was very polite and friendly. love the book surprise at the end (you'll understand what i mean when you go).

could have made it way better at home for a fraction of the price! so dissapointed. my partner and i had reservations here last week to celebrate something. we arrived about 8 pm it was fairly busy,,nice decor and atmosphere, the service was top notch very classy and professional service, our waitress recommended the perfect wine for us and was very attentive. so we anticipated amazing food because of the service and atmosphere i guess., totally disappointing, on many levels, one being we ordered a cheese bread for an appetizer and it came out lukewarm and microwaved, and i know it was microwaved for sure because with in 2 minutes it turned rock hard! and we had to stop eating it. the fois gras was disgusting we have had it many times at different restaurant and in various cities, this one was really bad and it tasted like bad chicken liver not goose liver, and the little bread crackers that came with it were gross too.the calamari was average at best wasnt very warm. then our main courses were bad i had chicken and my partner had the feature seafood dish both were barely warm, which is an issue all its own! i personally like to see a bit of steam rising from the food on my plate and it also tastes better at a warmer temperature.i could get into great detail but i don't feel like writing a long review,i will just say that everything from the food quality to the ingredients to to the flavours and food temps was wrong, and the only good part was the wine and the service, unfortunately we will never return, because we like good food.

disappointed. first and last made reservations weeks in advance and had already decided to go with the porterhouse...it was my birthday i can if i want right? wrong the waiter immediately started belly aching about how it wasn't the nights special. wow...ok than i'll have the wild boar rack with garlic mashed potatoes...wrong again...roast potatoes are the special ...wow again...at this point i wouldve had no problem walking out but proceeded to rack up a 300 plus bill on food i really didn't want. my girlfriends elk was blue anfd was ordered medium as well. poor show

calgary's best restaraunt!. well we went again with 4 of us this week.
the food here was the best in all categories from appetizer to dessert!
attention to detail was impecable!.
the only bad thing i can say is they need to upgrade their mens toilet.

the best restaurant experience all year!!. we just finished a wonderful dinner at the open range - our first time at this restaurant - and while we certainly have enjoyed a great many meals in various restaurants over the past year, we can honestly say this was probably the highlight of 2014.
she says: i had the bison spare ribs which were slow roasted in a bbq sauce with a bit of a kick, served on a bed of "grits." the meat fell of the bone and the bbq sauce was exquisite. i ordered the scalloped potatoes on the side - these as well were some of the best i've had - the sauce also had a bit of a "kick" to it which i really enjoyed.
he says: the tenderloin was one of the most tender i've ever had. a good size portion arrives on a wild rice, bean and mini onion in a sauce that brings it all together. couldn't finish it all so i'm looking forward to leftovers tomorrow.
the serving sizes were very generous and we both had dishes to take home.

if you love meat.... mussels and salads to start. boar with belly pork, lamb and braised bison ribs as entrees. all meals were excellent.

at open range you can still have a conversation without competing with the music or shouting over everyone else because of bad acoustics. the service is friendly and efficient. the food is consistently good. it's not on 17th so the next table will not be all staring at their cell phones (if you have not left kids with a baby sitter and granny is not dying why is your phone on in a restaurant you ignorant moron).

go for the atmosphere and for the meat.

amazing experience!. we arrived a bit early for our reservation but were greeted and promptly sat. as we waited for our friends to arrive we decided to have a cocktail, their list has the regulars (caesars, cosmos, mojitos etc) but with their own twist. once our friends arrived the waiter explained all of the features as well as answered all of our questions about the menu in detail, you could tell he really knew the items and cared about them (i wish we got his name!!), we ordered calamari to start while we figured out what we wanted as a main and chatted. the calamari was fresh and came with a nice aioli, a good change from regular tzatziki. my boyfriend and i went with the 24ox porterhouse for two which came with scalloped potatoes and asparagus. our friends ordered the wild boar and the bone-in rib chop. we also ordered a bottle of red to share with dinner. the mains came out in great timing, we weren't rushed after our appetizer but also didn't feel like we were waiting forever. our waiter made sure our drinks were always full, water was topped up and all the extra glasses and dishes were taken away in a timely manner, nothing worse than a table full of clutter!! now onto the mains! the portions were a generous size without being overwhelming, everything was hot and cooked to perfection!! you could tell everything on the plate was thought out and cooked with care. we ended up ordering another bottle of wine to finish off our meals and as i'm sure you can imagine there was no room for dessert even though we tried to convince ourselves that there was....goat cheese cheesecake...um yes please! overall we were there for 3 hours, not because they took too long for the food or service but because they let us enjoy the experience, never rushing and seeing that we were there to enjoy our friends company and the food! we are new to calgary and this will be our go to place for date nights and showing family and friends visiting what the city has to offer! thank you open range for reminding me that good service, quality food and the dining out experience still exists!

porterhouse project fail. had a bday dinner at open range. first time there. paid corkage and brought my own wine.

started with the buffalo bresaola with fontina cheese and tapenade. the buffalo was excellent but i found the strong tapenade overpowered it. i preferred the buffalo with the cheese and bread and no tapenade. also had the escargot which was good.

after much debate i decided to try the porterhouse project for two. what a mistake. the steak was really tough. there is no way this was a triple a cut of meat. we did not finish it. i would expect steakhouse steak to be as good as if not better than what i can do at home. i should have got the beef tenderloin. i noticed most others were ordering that. desert was great. service was excellent. just wish that steak was better. not sure i'll go back.

i really like it here. this is one of my favourite places to eat. setting is intimate and cozy, not exactly casual, but not exactly dressy. the food is familar (steak, chops, salmon, etc) but made interesting with reduction sauces and vegetable purees. but those reductions and purees are comfortable ones. they don't start getting all hoity-toity on you.

the staff are wonderful - easily shifting gears between "what the heck is elk diane and would i like it?" to noticing when you're busy chatting away and don't want to be disturbed. there must also be some kind of voo-doo communication between the front of house and the kitchen, because appetizers and courses are always beautifully timed. your main course isn't going to arrive 2 minutes after your appetizer. you're not going to be left wistfully staring at your empty plate while your dining companions are served.

personal faves: wild boar pork belly, elk diane (try it, its good), and anything lamb. good coffee, too.

reservations highly recommended. if you want a weekend sitting, reserve before wednesday. i wouldn't call this a family restuarant, but some folks do insist on bringing their kids with them. if you want to eat in kid-free peace, just ask to be seated in the lounge.
