we went for our anniversary . it was our first visit to open range , and definitely will not be our last . the atmosphere was beautiful and the presentation of our food gorgeous . i must also add the restaurant itself was very clean . also very important to me the restrooms were immaculate with really cute special touches to make you feel very comfortable . the service was exceptional ! our server "andy" was polite and friendly , and very knowledgable about all the food and beverages . we would recommend this restaurant 100% a true 10/10 ! thank you for such a wonderful dining experience andgreatevening out !

good food but boring atmosphere. had dinner there on a quite tuesday. nice interior, friendly and professional service. really good beer, wine, cocktail menu - lots of unique choices and priced fairly.
for dinner we had the corn and jalapeno fritters and the prime rib feature. the fritters were ok - the flavour was good but i don't think the tomatillo dipping sauce complimented the fritters.
our prime rib was serviced with duck fat poutine, beets and a yorkshire pudding. the yorkshire pudding was stale and the poutine disappointing. they used au jus instead of gravy in the pountine so it was similar to french fry soup.
the prime rib was amazing - i would order it again and just opt for a different side.
nice decor, good food, greatstaff but the atmosphere was pretty boring.

i went to open range a few weeks back for a belated birthday dinner with my family.  it was a cold and snowy weekend, but we bundled up and headed out in hopes of having agreatmeal. first off, my parents were not fans of the chairs.  they found them too low to be comfortable and as my mom put it, “more suited for people who want to sit and have a few drinks”.  then again, my family’s chinese so my parents aren’t usually the type who want to kick back with a few drinks and spend hours at a restaurant.  plus, we’re all on the short side so that might have factored into the chairs being so low.  still, i found the setting to be really cozy and i can see it beinggreatfor a romantic evening or just agreatplace for a few friends to gather. we started off with a few drinks.  my mom and i got the orange blossom lemonade pictured on the right and my sister got an italian soda in raspberry.  the lemonade didn’t have any kind of orange blossom flavour to me and was very sweet.  i like my le

this is probably going to be one of the most biased reviews i’ve ever written. don’t get me wrong - the place is great! the restaurant next door (big fish dockside) is owned by the same people, and it’s my favourite in the city. open range would’ve been a solid 5.0 if it weren’t for the country music on the background. i get it, we’re in alberta, and it is a steakhouse, but country music is, for the most part, the genre you either love or absolutely cannot stand. like i said, it is my personal preference, and the majority of albertans will likely not mind that at all, i simply wouldn’t go if i knew they played country. we were the only customers at the time and asked to turn the music down or change it. they politely apologized and said that they couldn’t change the music. again, we had no problem with that. the place decides the atmosphere, we weren’t there to reinvent their identity. there was some old school blues mixed in with the country, which solved the issue for me.

aside from the ambiance, the place isgreat- delicious food, knowledgeable staff, greatselection of cocktails. would definitely recommend to anyone who doesn’t mind occasional country on the background.

we had the porterhouse to share - 24 oz steak, scalloped potatoes and asparagus - it was probably the best steak dinner i have had in calgary. i loved it. the service wasgreattoo. will definitely be back. we tried the sourdough garlic cheese bread and tho it was good it was quite heavy and i could have done without that before the amazing main course.

i really want to try this restaurant for a long time and finally made the trip.  my friend and i order the crispy calamari to start.  the calamari tasted okay but i found it too much breading.  as for the main, i ordered the bone-in alberta lamb shank, it was amazing.  i enjoyed it very much.  my friend ordered the 24oz bone-in porterhouse, the quality was good and tastedgreatas well.  this restaurant will be my go-to steakhouse from now! :d

i would go here with a good appetite, as the menu options are extensive and the food is delicious. the ambience is pleasant and it's agreatplace to spend an evening with friends enjoying agreatmeal with good service. ask for a table with wing chairs - they're comfy, cosy and private.

could have made it way better at home for a fraction of the price! so dissapointed. my partner and i had reservations here last week to celebrate something. we arrived about 8 pm it was fairly busy,,nice decor and atmosphere, the service was top notch very classy and professional service, our waitress recommended the perfect wine for us and was very attentive. so we anticipated amazing food because of the service and atmosphere i guess., totally disappointing, on many levels, one being we ordered a cheese bread for an appetizer and it came out lukewarm and microwaved, and i know it was microwaved for sure because with in 2 minutes it turned rock hard! and we had to stop eating it. the fois gras was disgusting we have had it many times at different restaurant and in various cities, this one was really bad and it tasted like bad chicken liver not goose liver, and the little bread crackers that came with it were gross too.the calamari was average at best wasnt very warm. then our main courses were bad i had chicken and my partner had the feature seafood dish both were barely warm, which is an issue all its own! i personally like to see a bit of steam rising from the food on my plate and it also tastes better at a warmer temperature.i could get intogreatdetail but i don't feel like writing a long review,i will just say that everything from the food quality to the ingredients to to the flavours and food temps was wrong, and the only good part was the wine and the service, unfortunately we will never return, because we like good food.

the best restaurant experience all year!!. we just finished a wonderful dinner at the open range - our first time at this restaurant - and while we certainly have enjoyed agreatmany meals in various restaurants over the past year, we can honestly say this was probably the highlight of 2014.
she says: i had the bison spare ribs which were slow roasted in a bbq sauce with a bit of a kick, served on a bed of "grits." the meat fell of the bone and the bbq sauce was exquisite. i ordered the scalloped potatoes on the side - these as well were some of the best i've had - the sauce also had a bit of a "kick" to it which i really enjoyed.
he says: the tenderloin was one of the most tender i've ever had. a good size portion arrives on a wild rice, bean and mini onion in a sauce that brings it all together. couldn't finish it all so i'm looking forward to leftovers tomorrow.
the serving sizes were very generous and we both had dishes to take home.

amazing experience!. we arrived a bit early for our reservation but were greeted and promptly sat. as we waited for our friends to arrive we decided to have a cocktail, their list has the regulars (caesars, cosmos, mojitos etc) but with their own twist. once our friends arrived the waiter explained all of the features as well as answered all of our questions about the menu in detail, you could tell he really knew the items and cared about them (i wish we got his name!!), we ordered calamari to start while we figured out what we wanted as a main and chatted. the calamari was fresh and came with a nice aioli, a good change from regular tzatziki. my boyfriend and i went with the 24ox porterhouse for two which came with scalloped potatoes and asparagus. our friends ordered the wild boar and the bone-in rib chop. we also ordered a bottle of red to share with dinner. the mains came out ingreattiming, we weren't rushed after our appetizer but also didn't feel like we were waiting forever. our waiter made sure our drinks were always full, water was topped up and all the extra glasses and dishes were taken away in a timely manner, nothing worse than a table full of clutter!! now onto the mains! the portions were a generous size without being overwhelming, everything was hot and cooked to perfection!! you could tell everything on the plate was thought out and cooked with care. we ended up ordering another bottle of wine to finish off our meals and as i'm sure you can imagine there was no room for dessert even though we tried to convince ourselves that there was....goat cheese cheesecake...um yes please! overall we were there for 3 hours, not because they took too long for the food or service but because they let us enjoy the experience, never rushing and seeing that we were there to enjoy our friends company and the food! we are new to calgary and this will be our go to place for date nights and showing family and friends visiting what the city has to offer! thank you open range for reminding me that good service, quality food and the dining out experience still exists!

this small, unique restaurant on edmonton trail is agreatplace to relax, enjoy some wine by the wonderfully warm fireplace, and dive into some new types of food for a different experience. from the number of patrons who kept streaming in, it's obvious open range is becoming more popular than ever.

excellent food andgreatprice. the wife and i went there as a last minute decision, and it was agreatlast minute decision. the service and atmosphere was top notch. we had split the cattleman's special potter house cut with their scallop potatoes. the portions were plentiful and cooked to perfection. highly recommend this place as a strong contender among all of calgary's classic steak houses.
