open range - steak chops

we went for our anniversary . it was our first visit to open range , and definitely will not be our last . the atmosphere was beautiful and the presentation of our food gorgeous . i must also add therestaurantitself was very clean . also very important to me the restrooms were immaculate with really cute special touches to make you feel very comfortable . the service was exceptional ! our server "andy" was polite and friendly , and very knowledgable about all the food and beverages . we would recommend thisrestaurant100% a true 10/10 ! thank you for such a wonderful dining experience and great evening out !

open range is the sibling of big fish. next door and owned by the samerestaurantgroup. i love big fish; i think i would expect the same from this restaurant. when we arrived, we were the only other party in the room. i’m guessing monday nights are a bit slow. i started with the wild mushroom soup. it was thick and full of flavour. the elk “dianne” was lovely. deep, meaty flavor balanced by the acidity and sweetness of the red currant demi glace.  i choose the rice pilaf instead of the potato.  the green beans were young and crisp; the parsnip and onion were tender. hubby really enjoyed his corn and jalapeno fritters, the beef tenderloin and the dessert. the service was attentive and friendly. open range is to the land what big fish is to the sea. i love seafood; so i prefer big fish, but open range definitely is a home run. feature sheet wild mushroom topped with mustard red frill and topped with cold pressed canola oil corn and roasted jalapeno fritters with tomatillo buckwheat hone

straightforwardly in my opinion the bestrestaurantin calgary. the food is amazing, the combinations interesting and thoughtful. the staff is wonderful and there seems to be little turnover- a good sign. these folks have gone above and beyond to accommodate us - once regarding a friend, dying of cancer, not able to eat much, but so wanted to have a last meal there. they provided a series of small portions to allow her a wide range of all her favourites. we are steady customers and will continue to be.

this is probably going to be one of the most biased reviews i’ve ever written. don’t get me wrong - the place is great! therestaurantnext door (big fish dockside) is owned by the same people, and it’s my favourite in the city. open range would’ve been a solid 5.0 if it weren’t for the country music on the background. i get it, we’re in alberta, and it is a steakhouse, but country music is, for the most part, the genre you either love or absolutely cannot stand. like i said, it is my personal preference, and the majority of albertans will likely not mind that at all, i simply wouldn’t go if i knew they played country. we were the only customers at the time and asked to turn the music down or change it. they politely apologized and said that they couldn’t change the music. again, we had no problem with that. the place decides the atmosphere, we weren’t there to reinvent their identity. there was some old school blues mixed in with the country, which solved the issue for me.

aside from the ambiance, the place is great - delicious food, knowledgeable staff, great selection of cocktails. would definitely recommend to anyone who doesn’t mind occasional country on the background.

i chose open range as a venue for one of our social club ‘dinner in the city’ events. i’d been to open range a few times before so i know the quality of the food was great, the service was pleasant, and the ambience of therestaurantwas nice for a social event. we booked the wine room in the back of the restaurant. the room has a maximum of 32 people, and we ended up with only 20. with two tables of 6 and one table of 8 it was actually quite cozy and it turned out well.

i really want to try thisrestaurantfor a long time and finally made the trip.  my friend and i order the crispy calamari to start.  the calamari tasted okay but i found it too much breading.  as for the main, i ordered the bone-in alberta lamb shank, it was amazing.  i enjoyed it very much.  my friend ordered the 24oz bone-in porterhouse, the quality was good and tasted great as well.  thisrestaurantwill be my go-to steakhouse from now! :d

nice cozy cowboy-friendly setting with a variety of meat selection. we ordered the porter house, tenderloin and prime ribs, asparagus and yam fries. all generous portions with good side selections. our server was informative and quick too.
1 star deducted as the reservation system didn't seem to work properly. we used bookenda app to make the reservation for 5 adults and 1 kid but with bookenda we couldn't add the kid so i called therestaurantand let them know. but when we get there the server said we made the reservation for 5 adults only. didn't want to debate too long as they could accommodate the kid, but upsetting.

very cosy place with good service.
we ordered the porter house to share which is supposed to be the signature dish , i found that the meat was too chewy for the price we paid , not impressed at all.
the red velvet cake was to hard & dry . has been in the fridge for sometime.
i don't believe thisrestaurantrated as top 10restaurantin canada.

the best lamb i've ever had! it was cooked so well! the interior of therestaurantis very cute and rustic. however, the outside looks a bit run down but overall the service and the food is what you pay for.

very disappointing. we went to the open range last saturday, april 25th for my birthday. i was really looking forward to this evening and had never eaten here before and guess what? never will again! my rare steak was well done, gray all through and my side dish of wild rice with barley and black beans was so under cooked it was crunchy... the chef must have known that my meal was sub par but sent it out anyway. therestaurantwas not busy so there really is no excuse. i will not be going back to thisrestaurantand will not suggest it to anyone else.

could have made it way better at home for a fraction of the price! so dissapointed. my partner and i had reservations here last week to celebrate something. we arrived about 8 pm it was fairly busy,,nice decor and atmosphere,the service was top notch very classy and professional service,our waitress recommended the perfect wine for us and was very attentive. so we anticipated amazing food because of the service and atmosphere i guess., totally disappointing, on many levels,one being we ordered a cheese bread for an appetizer and it came out lukewarm and microwaved,and i know it was microwaved for sure because with in 2 minutes it turned rock hard! and we had to stop eating it. the fois gras was disgusting we have had it many times at differentrestaurantand in various cities,this one was really bad and it tasted like bad chicken liver not goose liver, and the little bread crackers that came with it were gross too.the calamari was average at best wasnt very warm. then our main courses were bad i had chicken and my partner had the feature seafood dish both were barely warm,which is an issue all its own! i personally like to see a bit of steam rising from the food on my plate and it also tastes better at a warmer temperature.i could get into great detail but i don't feel like writing a long review,i will just say that everything from the food quality to the ingredients to to the flavours and food temps was wrong,and the only good part was the wine and the service,unfortunately we will never return,because we like good food.

the bestrestaurantexperience all year!!. we just finished a wonderful dinner at the open range - our first time at thisrestaurant- and while we certainly have enjoyed a great many meals in various restaurants over the past year, we can honestly say this was probably the highlight of 2014.
she says: i had the bison spare ribs which were slow roasted in a bbq sauce with a bit of a kick, served on a bed of "grits." the meat fell of the bone and the bbq sauce was exquisite. i ordered the scalloped potatoes on the side - these as well were some of the best i've had - the sauce also had a bit of a "kick" to it which i really enjoyed.
he says: the tenderloin was one of the most tender i've ever had. a good size portion arrives on a wild rice, bean and mini onion in a sauce that brings it all together. couldn't finish it all so i'm looking forward to leftovers tomorrow.
the serving sizes were very generous and we both had dishes to take home.

if you love meat.... mussels and salads to start. boar with belly pork, lamb and braised bison ribs as entrees. all meals were excellent.

at open range you can still have a conversation without competing with the music or shouting over everyone else because of bad acoustics. the service is friendly and efficient. the food is consistently good. it's not on 17th so the next table will not be all staring at their cell phones (if you have not left kids with a baby sitter and granny is not dying why is your phone on in arestaurantyou ignorant moron).

go for the atmosphere and for the meat.

this small, uniquerestauranton edmonton trail is a great place to relax, enjoy some wine by the wonderfully warm fireplace, and dive into some new types of food for a different experience. from the number of patrons who kept streaming in, it's obvious open range is becoming more popular than ever.

open range. i wanted to like this place but i was just sort of underwhelmed and indifferent. the food tasted good but not memorable enough to go back. the charcuterie board was an interesting variety of dried game type meats. i didn't really like the decor, or the fact that therestaurantonly had about 4 tables occupied but sat us at the tiniest table right next to the drafty window.
