we came here for a friend birthday as he wanted to try out open range. they had a select menu which ranged from steak, chicken to fish. iorderedthe elk steak medium rare (tender, lean and gamey) which also came with a side of vegetables (squash and wild rice). overall food here is delicious with good quality. i'd recommend trying this place out.

i really want to try this restaurant for a long time and finally made the trip.  my friend and i order the crispy calamari to start.  the calamari tasted okay but i found it too much breading.  as for the main, iorderedthe bone-in alberta lamb shank, it was amazing.  i enjoyed it very much.  my friendorderedthe 24oz bone-in porterhouse, the quality was good and tasted great as well.  this restaurant will be my go-to steakhouse from now! :d

i've been wanting to try this place for a long time because i moved into the area a year ago and finally made it one night. the ambiance is very soft and elegant. but these guys don't mess around, they're serious about their meats. the waiters were very courteous and the owner even came by our table to chat. weorderedthe porter project cut which comes with a side of scalloped potatoes and asparagus. both of the sides were seriously delicious and large portions. the steak was very good however we found it to be very fatty and difficult to cut and eat. tjat made it very frustrating and i don't think i would order this cut again. however, all their other steaks looks amazing too when we saw them coming by us. can't wait to go back to try something else there!

nice cozy cowboy-friendly setting with a variety of meat selection. weorderedthe porter house, tenderloin and prime ribs, asparagus and yam fries. all generous portions with good side selections. our server was informative and quick too.
1 star deducted as the reservation system didn't seem to work properly. we used bookenda app to make the reservation for 5 adults and 1 kid but with bookenda we couldn't add the kid so i called the restaurant and let them know. but when we get there the server said we made the reservation for 5 adults only. didn't want to debate too long as they could accommodate the kid, but upsetting.

very cosy place with good service.
weorderedthe porter house to share which is supposed to be the signature dish , i found that the meat was too chewy for the price we paid , not impressed at all.
the red velvet cake was to hard & dry . has been in the fridge for sometime.
i don't believe this restaurant rated as top 10 restaurant in canada.

could have made it way better at home for a fraction of the price! so dissapointed. my partner and i had reservations here last week to celebrate something. we arrived about 8 pm it was fairly busy,,nice decor and atmosphere, the service was top notch very classy and professional service, our waitress recommended the perfect wine for us and was very attentive. so we anticipated amazing food because of the service and atmosphere i guess., totally disappointing, on many levels, one being weordereda cheese bread for an appetizer and it came out lukewarm and microwaved, and i know it was microwaved for sure because with in 2 minutes it turned rock hard! and we had to stop eating it. the fois gras was disgusting we have had it many times at different restaurant and in various cities, this one was really bad and it tasted like bad chicken liver not goose liver, and the little bread crackers that came with it were gross too.the calamari was average at best wasnt very warm. then our main courses were bad i had chicken and my partner had the feature seafood dish both were barely warm, which is an issue all its own! i personally like to see a bit of steam rising from the food on my plate and it also tastes better at a warmer temperature.i could get into great detail but i don't feel like writing a long review,i will just say that everything from the food quality to the ingredients to to the flavours and food temps was wrong, and the only good part was the wine and the service, unfortunately we will never return, because we like good food.

disappointed. first and last made reservations weeks in advance and had already decided to go with the porterhouse...it was my birthday i can if i want right? wrong the waiter immediately started belly aching about how it wasn't the nights special. wow...ok than i'll have the wild boar rack with garlic mashed potatoes...wrong again...roast potatoes are the special ...wow again...at this point i wouldve had no problem walking out but proceeded to rack up a 300 plus bill on food i really didn't want. my girlfriends elk was blue anfd wasorderedmedium as well. poor show

the best restaurant experience all year!!. we just finished a wonderful dinner at the open range - our first time at this restaurant - and while we certainly have enjoyed a great many meals in various restaurants over the past year, we can honestly say this was probably the highlight of 2014.
she says: i had the bison spare ribs which were slow roasted in a bbq sauce with a bit of a kick, served on a bed of "grits." the meat fell of the bone and the bbq sauce was exquisite. iorderedthe scalloped potatoes on the side - these as well were some of the best i've had - the sauce also had a bit of a "kick" to it which i really enjoyed.
he says: the tenderloin was one of the most tender i've ever had. a good size portion arrives on a wild rice, bean and mini onion in a sauce that brings it all together. couldn't finish it all so i'm looking forward to leftovers tomorrow.
the serving sizes were very generous and we both had dishes to take home.

amazing experience!. we arrived a bit early for our reservation but were greeted and promptly sat. as we waited for our friends to arrive we decided to have a cocktail, their list has the regulars (caesars, cosmos, mojitos etc) but with their own twist. once our friends arrived the waiter explained all of the features as well as answered all of our questions about the menu in detail, you could tell he really knew the items and cared about them (i wish we got his name!!), weorderedcalamari to start while we figured out what we wanted as a main and chatted. the calamari was fresh and came with a nice aioli, a good change from regular tzatziki. my boyfriend and i went with the 24ox porterhouse for two which came with scalloped potatoes and asparagus. our friendsorderedthe wild boar and the bone-in rib chop. we alsoordereda bottle of red to share with dinner. the mains came out in great timing, we weren't rushed after our appetizer but also didn't feel like we were waiting forever. our waiter made sure our drinks were always full, water was topped up and all the extra glasses and dishes were taken away in a timely manner, nothing worse than a table full of clutter!! now onto the mains! the portions were a generous size without being overwhelming, everything was hot and cooked to perfection!! you could tell everything on the plate was thought out and cooked with care. we ended up ordering another bottle of wine to finish off our meals and as i'm sure you can imagine there was no room for dessert even though we tried to convince ourselves that there was....goat cheese cheesecake...um yes please! overall we were there for 3 hours, not because they took too long for the food or service but because they let us enjoy the experience, never rushing and seeing that we were there to enjoy our friends company and the food! we are new to calgary and this will be our go to place for date nights and showing family and friends visiting what the city has to offer! thank you open range for reminding me that good service, quality food and the dining out experience still exists!

amazed. im usually a very picky person when it comes to food. i went to the open range with a bit of skepticism. i was blown away by the quality of food and service, our waiter was really nice and kept things coming in order which is great. iorderedtheir blue cheese salad and they managed to delicately balance between the sweetness and sour without being over powered by the blue cheese. the roasted duck was cooked to perfection, and the desert was out of this world. it was a bit over priced but worth every penny

disappointed. first time here and had high expectations from what we'd heard. the place was totally empty, first suspicious sign. iorderedthe lamb shank which was tasty enough but very little of it. mostly fat. my friendorderedthe beef tenderloin (medium) it came totally well done, she sent it back. second time around it was done properly. weorderedtwo sides, jumbo prawns, they were over cooked and lacked flavour. the mac and cheese was over cooked, dry and the topping was burnt, we sent that back and did not want another one. many better steak houses in calgary than this. will not go back.

i went for the clam starter because i had heard the chef talking about it on cbc radio. they were out of the clams, so iorderedthe spanish onion soup which was ok, i have had better in calgary. for my main i got the lamb shank, i love lamb but i could not eat all this, one side was good and the other side tasted funny. it came with white corn grits, i hate grits, it does not say that on the menu and no one informed me. they asked my husband if he would like potatoes or rice. after i finished the little bit of lamb that tasted good they said the could replace the grits with something else. there was also no vegetables on my plate, i did not eat most of my dinner so iordereddessert. i got the 3 ice creams/ sorbets. yet again the one i wanted was not available. so i got peanut butter and jam ice cream- this was the wrong texture for ice cream and i don't know how they managed to make a ice cream taste dry but they did. papaya sorbet- this one was good and edible. wild berry sorbet- this just tasted like frozen sugar water died purple. my husband ate all of his food but did not say it was excellent, he had the dried game meat plate and that was ok, followed by the beef tenderloin, it was a good piece of meat but was glazed with something sweet.
the service was excellent and the staff extremely nice but i chose this place for the food and if i can cook this better at home why bother going back.

stopped in for dinner on a thursday - we were sat quickly as they weren't very busy. the hostesses were on top of things, not to mention very sweet. we were quite confused as to who our server was - we had two people taking/dropping orders. they weren't very informative nor friendly. weorderedthe bison bresaola to start, our crostini never arrived but the hostess brought us some bread. weorderedthe wild boar and tenderloin. the meals were good - filling and cooked well. i was surprised that most the entrees are similar, other than the meat...the sides are the same. i like to see restaurants that support and acknowledge local farmers. so all-in-all the meal was good, service was lame.

fantastic. i went here with my boyfriend and parents and had an amazing time. the decor underwhelmed me, as did the appetizers and desserts but drinks and entrees are definitely worth every penny.

for my appetizer, i enjoyed the feature, a pheasant pate with what i believe was an apricot sauce. my mom got their black bean and duck confit soup and while everyone at the table thought the soup had layers of amazing flavour- there just wasn't enough in any of the appetizer portion sizes.

entrees were a whole other story. my dad, a typical red-meat and potato man who orders steak in about every restaurant he visits, orderedthe porterhouse and said that it was the best steak he has ever had. it was really interesting to learn from our very knowledgeable server that the aging process between the porterhouse and the ny (which my bf got) was different, which accounted for the change in flavour my dad enjoyed so much.

that's not to say the ny wasn't amazing- i think my boyfriend just about licked the plate clean.

as for myself, i was in heaven with my duck break with riesling braised apples and hard cider glaze. the portion of duck i received made my jaw drop, and it was cooked to melt-in-your-mouth perfection. i do think that the rice side dish needs to be rethought. it would have been nice to have a side that accompanied the flavour of the duck a little better.

overall, i would highly suggest open range for the food. just don't let the decor or the horrible look of the website deter you from enjoying yourself.
