a worthy finer-dining experience. the dining room was booked for a holiday party, but no matter, they were able to reserve us a table in their more casual lounge, where service was still excellent and the menu the same.
we started with the corn/jalapeno fritters with tomatillo buckwheat honey dip - nice, crispy and kinda good on their own.
i then had the braised bison short ribs in ancho chili bbq sauce, while he had the apricot glazed wild boar rack & wild mushroom-stuffed pork belly. as i recall, i had a choice of side (besides it coming already with a corn cake) so i chose grits, as those don't feature often in the great white north (and i'd had good grits in alabama). while i loved my grits, and the corn cake (yes, a bit redundant, esp w/ the app), and the short ribs were super-tender, i did feel like my sauce could use toning down by a notch or so (very rich). that said, my husband thought it was fantastic, so maybe it's a matter of taste, or quantity. his dish was most excellent and meat was cooked to perfection.
what hit it out of the park for me was dessert. i'm no white chocolate fan, and i've had lavender in food before and not liked it (e.g. jelly, tea...). still, some voice in my head said "order the free form white chocolate goat cheesecake with honey gingersnaps and warm chocolate lavender sauce" (that was my cheese voice... i like goat cheese and i love cheesecake). my husband got the maple bourbon pecan pie. i put my order in with trepidation as i love pecan pie and wondered if i'd regret my choice. verdict? no way - the goat cheesecake was fantastic. in fact, after doing our usual "half-time dessert swap", we gladly re-swapped for our original orders as he preferred his pie and i raved over my cheesecake. it was just so dreamy, tasty, oh-so-different for cheesecake. i gotta get my hands on that recipe.
all in all, a great conclusion to his birthday with very friendly and hard-working wait staff. the ambiance was really warm, cozy, and yet just refined enough... i'd gobackfor another special occasion.
