this is my go-to place for sushi now. the sushi is deliciously fresh -  when you order a sushi platter you get a lovely arrangement of salmon, salmon belly, tuna, uni (sea urchin), kingfish, freshwater eel, scampi - atop succulent, tender, perfectly seasoned rice. a lot of cheap and nasty sushi bars have opened in sydney over the last year offering nutty rice and fish that's been sitting in a refrigerator for days and days giving japanese food a bad name. i suggest you skip those places and come here. service is casual, the environment casual. but the sushi is top notch. oh yeah, sashimi, tempura, salads and cocktails are great too!

the place has a nice atmosphere. our entrees came out fast and were tasty. we had to wait about an hour for our food because they had our orders mixed up, which was frustrating, but we were offered complimentary drinks as an apology. additionally, the dish that was late was on the house, courtesy of the manager (vin, i think?) which left us leaving satisfied. with regards to the food quality, the sushi was fresh and delicious and we will definitely be coming back for more.

i was craving japanese food and so we decided to try the revamped sushi of masuya which used to be musashi. we ordered 3 sets. sashimi, eel and anago and the masuya bento. the sashimi was yum, especially the seared tuna one. one thing though... their wasabi is so weak. normally, i am not a big fan of eel but it actually tasted pretty good here. whenever i go to masuya, i always get their bento so i find that their standard is pretty good across all the restaurants and this bento definitely met the benchmark.

left hungry. went to musashi at 8:15pm on a tuesday night. although customers were few, we waited 25mins to receive tap water despite trying to catch the waiters eye for over 5mins. and then another 40mins before the waiter realizes that out order had been misplaced. complimentary drinks were offered which took another 15mins. food finally arrives after an hour and it was the incorrect order.....we were speechless.
my advice? dont go unless u have over two hours to wait for 3dishes...we didnt...

masuya is one of the first places the mr and i first went on a date, so i was keen to check out sushi of masuya when it popped up where musashi used to be, near capitol theatre.  deluxe sushi platter sashimi platter just like masuya, the sushi and sashimi here is of high quality and fresh.  deep fried oysters the deep fried oysters come out freshly fried and are extremely moreish. we end up ordering a second round of these.  definitely a nice sushi spot for a bit of pre-theatre dining. i'm keen to check out some of the bentos too, which are only available during lunch.

name change to sushi of masuya with a revamp of the renovation too, seems to want to upgrade their image and menu, dishes are higher quality and sushi/sashimi prepared with much more care than before (when it was musashi). came for lunch (ranges from $18 - $25), which is on the pricey side (for lunch), however the quality of food you get is amazing! super fresh and sushi prepared by skilled sushi chefs. come when you have a craving for superior quality sushi/sashimi!

completely different from the old musashi .. in a bad way!. after many years of not eating at musashi, my family thought it would be nice to try it again after it had undergone renovations.

we thought it would be busy on a friday night at 7:30 like it used to be but we got a table for 5 with ease, with half the restaurant empty already.

looking at the menu, the variety is greatly reduced from the old musashi and i had always struggled to find food to eat at the previous musashi. the prices are also quite expensive, which is understandable given the location and the type of food they're going for (izakaya style).

the food arrived and the taste of most of the food was surprisingly pleasant. however, the deluxe sashimi platter tasted not very fresh and most of the sashimi had been slightly seared or grilled, presumably to hide the lack of freshness.

the real pain came from ordering green tea though. as a family of huge tea drinkers that require constant refilling, the lack of a pot for 5 cups of tea was annoying enough.
the tea came out lukewarm at best. however, when asking for refills, the staff struggled to understand what we were asking for with their limited english skills.
the first refill we asked for took about 10 minutes, with a few chase ups required with full explanations about what we had asked for (just a green tea refill!) before the tea came back.
the next refill we asked for, the girl printed off the bill and tried to explain that we had already ordered tea which costed money. we tried explaining back that we wanted refills at which she would explain again that we already ordered tea but refills were free. okay, then, give us some refills then!

the table next to us also asked the waitresses why the menu outside was different to the menu inside, and the only explanation was "the menu has changed". i suspect the management has changed and they have kept the old menu outside to draw in customers.

all in all, the food is not bad but don't expect the service that this kind of price point gives you the expectation for.

never again. last night i was there with a couple of friends. we weren't aware of the new management, and we were shocked at the new menu and customer service.

we wanted to order the pork knuckle, which came with crispy potatoes on the side, but the waiter told us there were no potatoes - how can a restaurant list food items and change it without amending the menu. but, having said that, we ended up ordering this anyway.

we also wanted to ordered a kingfish main...and surprise surprise...there was no kingfish either!! at a "japanese" restaurant, there was no kingfish!! my friend was not pleased at all. in the end, we chose the john dory main instead (served with sweet potato on the side).

when our food came, the entrees were okay, and we were happy with it. but when the mains came, we were all shocked. i have a nut allergy (to all nuts, but mainly peanuts). although it's only a mild reaction (just breaking out in hives), its unpleasant, so i'll avoid it as much as possible. when i eat out, i'd choose nut-free dishes or ask to have no nuts added on.

on this pork knuckle dish, the chef has gone and sprinkled finely crushed nuts all over the dish. this was not listed on the menu, and we were not expecting any nuts in the dishes we had ordered. when we notified waiter #1, she said "you never told us there was a nut allergy", and was reluctant to do anything. we asked waiter #2 which type of nuts was used, and she wasn't sure either. waiter #3 comes around while we were eating, and said "the nut is cashew, so i think its fine."

i was not happy at all. the staff at this restaurant should go and revise the food standards and food safety protocols. nut allergy can be serious issue as it can cause a person to have a serious reaction over this. the staff at this restaurant treated this so lightly.

also, the bill was given to us straight away when they cleared the table.

sambal, crispy fried noodles, duck on the menu. this japanese isn't your typical sushi and bento box joint. i like that the chef has actually allowed classic japanese dishes be influenced by other various cuisines just like the population of sydney.

poor service. i am very disappointed with musashi ;-( . it clams to be japanese but no sushi??? and mainly western food
green tea is by the cup at $3 each sorry no refills the manager claims. the worst part is the incredible lack of service. i has to ask for cutlery and water even.
this is not japanese,
best if you give it a miss.

please bring back to old menu. new menu disappointing. we haven't eaten at musashi (which was one of our favourite japanese restaurant sin sydney) for a number of years as there was always a long queue outside the door and sometimes we just couldn't wait. the long queue outside of a restaurant is always a good sign for good quality food.

this weekend we thought we give out favourite restaurant a another try as we have all night to queue up and when we turned up at 6 30 pm on a saturday, we were surprised the queue has disappeared and the restaurant wasn't full! the restaurant has been transformed with new decor (which is modern and inviting) and a new short menu. our favourite sushi rolls have disappeared and it's been replaced with attempted fusion japanese cuisine. there is only 1 type of sashimi to choose from and all the sushis are gone. while the sashimi was fresh, the new menu lacks the traditional japanese food we missed.
we ordered agadash tofu and miso duck. while tofu and duck were cooked well, the broth and seasoning were strange for our taste.

the service was good and waiters and waitresses were friendly

but we missed the old musashi!!! please bring back to old menu! we missed the long queue.

went to musashi last night with a friend. didn't know it was renovated. but noticed the menu was changed.

ordered the salmon in creamy miso mushroom sauce, salt & pepper squid, bbq duck salad, agedashi tofu.

presentation was totally far from a japanese restaurant standard. food was just salty. no other taste.

the waitress adviced that the dishes were modern asian!

apparently there's been a change of owner and chef. it is now korean so no longer under the izakaya group japanese restaurants.

so don't be fooled.

also, they close at 10pm but at 920pm, the bill was given to us and the waitress came by to clear our plates that still had food, constantly asking if we were done.

at 9pm, 1 of the bosses started removing the table tops and leaving the door open which allowed the cold draft to blow in.

new musashi experience. i have just been to new musashi restaurant in city (447 pitt streeet one next to capitol theatre).

the dishes are now more towards the "fusion japanese" with a little bit of french and western flavours. my partner and i were quite impressed with the new changes and the prices were very reasonable. it was good to order a couple of different dishes and shared between us. the staffs are very firendly and you must try a new concept there. however, they still do have some old traditional dishes such as sashimi, teriyaki chicken...

-----23 may, 2012-----

happy birthday. it was my birthday treat and we went to our favourite restaurant called "musashi" on 18 april 2012 and it was not as busy as we thought it would be. however, it was good for us as we got more personal attention from the staffs and we enjoyed our night very much.

we ordered a couple of different udons. seafood udon and one from nabeyaki udon and both of them were fantastic and each udon was enough to be shared by 2 hungry people. the waitress who was serving us gave some extra bowls and spoons to share the udons and it was very thoughtful of them to do that ^^;

we, of course, also ordered our main sushi and sashimi sets. how can you go without them in the japanese restaurant such as musashi???

sashimi and sushi were excellent and they were very frrrrrrrrresh and quite generous in portion for their price. what more can you ask from the customers' perspective???

anyway, the atmosphere was excellent and i especially liked the music they played there. yes, it brought my old nostalgic memories of going there some years ago and musashi has not changed much since then. price is very reasonable and the staffs are very friendly. i can still recognise one of the head chefs there and i cannot understand some people complaining of small minor things when they go to a restaurant.

i could not be happier for my 50th birthday, yes my 50th birthday and i am looking forward to go there again in my 51st in 2013.

as they say, sayonara and mata oai shimashoone!!!!
