a very popular eatery in the heart of sydney cbd. to get a table there, you will either need to call and make a reservation, otherwise the next best way is you can do a walk-in by arriving early at the restaurant before they open at 5:45pm, write your name on the clipboard list, take a number and wait for your number to be called.

i ordered the king & i sushi, a side of vegetable tempura and a kirin beer to wash it all down. the food quality is really high and very tasty. i would definitely come back again and try the othermenuitems.

it can be a little pricey but it's worth the price you pay in my opinion.

great value bento boxes at lunchtime. the prices rise at dinnertime and it is bit expensive.the lunchmenuis definitely better value. however, the quality of the food is always very high no matter when you go in to eat!

the sashimi is one of the freshest that i have eaten in sydney. and this comes from someone who doesn't really like sashimi! when i do crave it (very rarely), i want to eat at masuya suisan!

price was ok for themenu(i think this is $29), however i feel that their quality has decreased over the year. the sashimi was not fresh although the cut is ok. the rice isn't good quality and taste more like the kind of japanese rice in a $13 bento. the worst thing was the tempura. i do not expect amazing tempura at this price, but the vegetables were oily and you can see how much oil came out from them on the plate. the prawn was very poor quality and taste weird. tempura should be at least crispy but the batter was soggy. the sweet potato slice and the pumpkin were undercooked. i tolerated the sashimi but i couldn't even try to finish the tempura. very disappointed as themenuis pretty good and it used to be a nice place. with this kind of quality, i don't know how do they justify serving full blood wagyu on the $90 menu) as they would most definitely ruin the meat.

photos onmenuappear bigger than they look! portions were a bit too small relative to the price for them, so bear that in mind. overall, food wasn’t too bad but i just had higher expectations due to the hype for this restaurant. main thing that irked me was rude customer service from the waiters who kept interrupting us every 5 minutes to clear a plate (why not wait till we’re done - we only have 3 dishes!) or clarify something unnecessary and obvious. overall average experience.

better start lining up prior to opening around 5:45 pm, alternatively come for the second round after the first group of people start leaving at 7-ish.
sashimi was very fresh, we found the white fish particularly enjoyable.menusays it serves 4-5 but the 2 of us ordered sashimi, hotpot and some yakiniku (guess we’re just very hungry?)
speaking of the yakiniku it was quite a small portion (around 5-6 pieces) and personally i think it’s also over cooked. so probably not worth the price.
the chanko-nabe hotpot was alright, the soy milk taste was quite subtle but nothing too special about it.

always busy during dinner and lunch. i visited for lunch just by myself. the place was half full, but they got bento take away order through phone, so the kitchen was busy already.

i ordered a lunch set, it took 30 mins to deliver. i saw my tempura plate was ready to go inside of the kitchen, but the setmenudid not come out until 5 mins later.
they seem to cook for take away first (understandable though) .

the meal was just okay. tempura was warm enough, but zucchini was over cooked, prawn was mostly batter, the other veg/fake crab stick tempura were just okay, and were not overly crispy. i was kinda disappointed as the tempura was the main dish in the meal.

i would go back for other menu, in particular for sashimi stuff, they look good.

definitely come here early to avoid the wait (before 6pm)!! the line just shows how popular they are though, they’ve got everything from sashimi to hot pot 🍣🍱🍤🍶🥩
the staff are super friendly, they kept apologising for the wait, but once you order they’re pretty quick with bringing the food out, since a lot of themenulike sashimi and hot pot are raw.
their location is so convenient too i pass by them everyday going home so i will definitely go back 👍🏻

came here due to rating and also walked past this place a number of times.

firstly you have to be prepare to wait by putting your name down on a piece of paper, common these days but the stupid thing was that there were empty tables and they don't jump through to the next number even if there was a suited party to be seated! i was only on my own and eventually i was seated on a table that was empty like 20mins prior!

more importantly the food was not worth waiting for. tempura was one of the worse, prawns were soggy, and bulks of fried onion were the main thing! for main i had tasmania don which was salmon, uni, and fish roes, it wasn't anything amazing but just the standard.

seems that the lunch time setmenuis quite attractive so maybe a better choice for that or if you come as a group the popular thing were the steam pots.

would i come back again very unlikely as there are heaps better japanese restaurants around!

didn't have a booking so was directed to an outdoor table which wasn't stable. i was impressed with the largemenuthey had, variety was definitely there. i was having dinner at the time but i noticed they had great bento lunch deals only available for lunch time. on this particular night we were served by a string of "trainee" staff. they were friendly but clueless and at some point tried dumping food on our table which was not ordered. food was tasty and sashimi salmon was very fresh. wait time was low despite a pretty packed house. i endeavour to return and try lunch menus and also a seat inside with no wobbly table!

a change of name, now masuya suisan, so i'm guessing a change of management as well. themenuis a bit more streamlined since i was last here, which was couple of years ago. the queue was still there though, 30mins wait on a tuesday night. although the staff were friendly, service was rather slow. we started with some edamame, then had some blue fin tuna handrolls & aburi salmon sushi, both were very fresh, particularly the tuna was melting in the mouth and had a nice sweetness. my friend was disappointed that there was no takoyaki on the menu, so we got some tempura calamari instead, which was softer in texture & fried lighter than the fish & chips shop version or the chinese yum cha version. also went very well with the kirin beer. we finished with some lamb short ribs, which was soft (not quite falling off the bone) with a nice sticky bbq sauce, but was still a bit fatty & left an oily mouth feel. overall, not as good as i remembered, but still a solid japanese offering.

sushi by masuya has a greatmenuwith many delicious options on offer. japanese food lovers will be satisfied by the awesome food. i booked a table at sushi by masuya after having many great experiences at their sister restaurants in the city at masuya, miso and also sushi makoto in chatswood. i'm used to the high quality food at all the restaurants so i had high expectations for sushy by masuya.

have you ever come across a restaurant that the quality has declined so dramatically over the years through multiple changes of management that it dropped from one of your favorite to most hated? this was how up and down my relationship with this place is like. we loved it on first visit and swore to come back; but when we did the decor had changed along with menu, chefs and management. the food became mediocre. but still clinging on to its glory in earlier days, i foolishly decided to have my birthday dinner here with 7 others. themenuwas slim pickings and confusing with japanese pasta and some other weird creations?! the food was ordinary at best. the only saving grace for the night was the $5 happy hour ashai. you need it to drown out the average food. pictures attached were from its glorious days which were long gone.

it's been a good decade since the last time i tried this little japanese restaurant and from my understanding, there has been quite a few management overhauls during this time. all i can say is i'm glad this change has occurred as little could be faulted from my experience on a quiet tuesday evening.

from our entrance, the three of us were seated immediately in a cosy corner spot and presented with water, menus and share bowls. the service was attentive and charming and although english was a second language for most of the staff, their concentration and efforts regardless of workload really made for a comfortable experience.

themenuwas extensive and incredibly detailed with pictures accompanying all dishes. extra points for the user friendliness after a long stressful day. we chose to share our meal and ordered the yukimi wagyu hotpot, grilled semi dried calamari, karaage chicken, and the special sushi main.

the calamari and karaage chicken both arrived swiftly. both perfectly cooked and was accompanied by the most luscious mayo coated with specks of chilli. in an attempt to refrain from double-dipping, we all went to town with our first dips and enjoyed every last drop of it. i'm usually afraid of ordering grilled calamari as often they are overcooked, which makes them tough and chewy or undercooked, leaving a slimy, fishy aftertaste. no such fear here!

sushi main showcased the sashimi chef's trained handcraft and fresh fish catches. all items were identical to the pictured menus and again could not be faulted. we even got a giant blob of wasabi after requesting a little more from the waitress.

the real highlight of the night (or cherry atop the ice cream) was the wagyu in a pot of garlic soy milk soup. main objective is to let the soup cook on high for 10minutes before stirring and separating the sliced meat to serve. i was left in charge of this and really want to tell you how perfectly i cooked the meat so that it was melt in the mouth, but truth is, the beautiful marbling signals the high quality of the product.

total for the night was $100 for 3 and with the exceptional standard in both food and service, was a bargain night out. will i be back before the next decade rolls around? you betcha!
