lost us at soggy softshell crab. used to be one of our favourite japanese restaurant in sydney. used to have fantastic food that was worth every min of wait. but the last 2 times we went it was just not up to par anymore. food was terrible - the softshell crab we loved was soggy, unagi tasted funky and sushi / sashimi was not fresh. we thought we came on a bad night the firsttimebut the 2nd visit confirmed that something is amiss in the kitchen. our friend went a couple of weeks later and came out with the same bad taste in their mouths. apparently they have changed owners. disappointing and we won't be going back anymore.

the firsttimei came to masuya suisan was out of curiosity, judging by the number of people queuing up for lunch and dinner. sometimes the line stretches further among pitt st, and it doesn't seem to end. masuya suisan presents itself as a high-quality restaurant with 'proclaimed' freshest seafood and meat in the market. the restaurant takes pride in its food hence high-end looking menu, the distinguishing prices, and the crowded diners.

i was excited for my sushi plate because it has almost every seafood components besides the egg omelette and cucumber. bbq eel, salmon, tuna, kingfish, mackerel, and cuttlefish all displayed neatly on one plate. it was nice. the chicken karaage, tempura, and the fisherman's soup came after. it took a longtimefor the food to arrive... food was good, but nothing stood out. service was slow. don't put many trainees on the same shift especially if your restaurant is super busy, they end up overwhelmed.

secondtimearound, i came here for lunch. ordered teishoku (japanese homestyle meal), one with beef, and the others were with chicken & tempura. i don't know what went wrong here but it tasted extremely average. i could go elsewhere and avoid paying more than $20 per person with such food quality. under the masuya international group, i'd prefer going to miso for teishoku for much better meals and service.

this place is consistently always packed (especially on weekends) so expect a decent waittimebefore eating here. i ate here on a saturday night and had to spend 30mins loitering around the front of the restaurant before being seated at a shared table.

30mins was a lot longer than i was expecting as i was the sixth name waiting on the list. unfortunately, we were starving and had no choice but to lean against the walls due to no waiting seats. the staff provided tea for the waiting customers, but nothing more.

it was quite disorganised as there was no line whatsoever, and many customers did not know that you had to write your name down on the clipboard to be eventually seated. after 30mins of waiting, 8-10 names had quickly accumulated after mine and there was no longer any space to even stand in front of the restaurant due to the huge crowd.

the wait turned out to be worthwhile as the hotpot was delicious, filling and full of rich flavour. the broth was fantastic and well worth the price. i left the restaurant feeling very content and satisfied with the meal. the service was also attentive and very polite.

despite me leaving about 1-1.5hrs later, the restaurant still had a line of customers waiting outside to be served.

the food itself was great but the waittimewas not (hence the minus one star). i definitely do not recommend coming here when you’re starving, as many customers even gave up on waiting due to how long they had been forced to stand for.

loved the old musashi for many many years until this place has been reformed. still the same deco which was quite nostalgic~ seafood quality was good. the hotpot was plenty enough for us two and sushi was not that great (i have high standards for sushi...)

the service on the other hand was quite strange. feeling like under a lot of pressure been told again and again how muchtimewe got left and when was the last order.. under the pressure i don’t think i can give it a 5 star. be prepare with many korean waiters speaks poor english... communication was bit difficult.

this was my firsttimeto masuya but i think i might have found my favorite japanese restaurant in the city!

we ordered quite a bit as a group but i can’t complain about any of the dishes.

i really enjoyed the karaage chicken and the agedashi tofu. the chicken was just so yummy and the tofu definitely worth a try!

the sashimi platter was delicious and all the seafood were very fresh.

and lastly the hotpot! this is by far the best japanese hotpot i’ve ever had! the wagyu beef was so tender and delicious that keeps making me to want to go back.

overall, quality food, friendly staff and service combined with a good environment is a place that i’ll definitely go back to.

first dinner with enyi guo parents.

💑👩‍❤️‍👩 so-called two-generation “double day” lol 😂 😆 😝! we finally winded🌬 up with competing for pda.

mix sushi plate - only tuna sushi 🍣 met my expectation, but others failed to.

wagyu soy milk hot pot - soy milk broth was amazing! quite thick and milky as compared with japanese restaurants in newtown. wagyu are in large pieces which are quite suitable for meat lovers. they should have had mushrooms 🍄, and then it would be more impressive. (personally love mushrooms 🍄)

overall, it’s a lovely place to a small get-together 💓💓 a memorabletime💓

thanks 🌸enyi 🍭🍭

firsttimecomer but seriously questioning the food hygiene of this place especially when you are specialised in preparing raw seafood.

ordered the teriyaki set but when half way through it, found a hair has been half blended into the flour coating of the chicken - which means the hair has been marinated, then deep fried, and eventually sauce-tossed with my chicken...

very disappointed experience and will not come back gain.

masuya suisan

authentic japanese restaurant that has good quality sashimi, fresh sushi and tasty wagyu. japanese themed interior with polite japanese waitresses.

firsttimetrying the wagyu sukiyaki and it was definately worth it. enjoyed the experience of cooking and dipping the meat in raw egg. it was flavoursome from the sukiyaki sauce and meat. not surprised as to why they don't accept bookings and how the place gets really busy. the service was quick and very attentive. the blue fin tuna was my firsttimetrying it and it just melts in your mouth.

overall, i would definately recommend this place and would come back to try the other dishes.

best japanese restaurant in town (so far) ! always on the top of my list everytimei visit sydney. the foods are great, especially the pork tonkatsu (if i’m not mistaken) lunch package and aburi salmon. chicken and salmon teriyaki are also great. the queue was really long on a cold winter night, but it’s worth the wait! will drop by whenever i am in sydney!

it's a japanese restaurant near central. there are always people waiting outside. to secure a seat i recommend to arrive early before 5.30pm

we four ordered [wagyu sukiyaki course], which comes in a big hotpot, and waiter cooked it for us. the meat was cut in pieces and was thick. the soup tasted a bit sweet, especially when the water had boiled up and there was less water in the pot.

[update 20 jun 2018]
thistimewe tried {wagyu snow hot pot $55}. the soup is like milk but is thicker. it'll become flat at the end when you are about to finish. wagyu is again very good.

{pork fried udon $14.8} tastes a bit sour. it's suitable for one person only. not ideal for sharing.

definitely one of the best japanese place in town! the soy milk wagyu beef port and seafood port are the must-try! the only down side could be: if you are not there by thetimethey open, long queue alert

on several of the trips that i had taken with iron fist to sydney, sometimes we have stayed in the metro hotel, which overlooks campbell street. everytimewe go, i look down from the hotel room to see considerable crowds at masuya suisan downstairs and make a note that i ought to try it, but as always, i had already made a booking of some sort and we never got the chance. so thistimewhen i went with queen v, i made a point to go and try it out (sorry, iron fist, i'll have to go with you some othertime;).

friendly and enthusiastic service, sushi was delicious, well presented and fresh. prices weren't too exorbitant, will definitely go and try the sukiyaki nexttime😄 go early to write your name down on the list if you have a big group because there was quite a long line.

came here due to rating and also walked past this place a number of times.

firstly you have to be prepare to wait by putting your name down on a piece of paper, common these days but the stupid thing was that there were empty tables and they don't jump through to the next number even if there was a suited party to be seated! i was only on my own and eventually i was seated on a table that was empty like 20mins prior!

more importantly the food was not worth waiting for. tempura was one of the worse, prawns were soggy, and bulks of fried onion were the main thing! for main i had tasmania don which was salmon, uni, and fish roes, it wasn't anything amazing but just the standard.

seems that the lunchtimeset menu is quite attractive so maybe a better choice for that or if you come as a group the popular thing were the steam pots.

would i come back again very unlikely as there are heaps better japanese restaurants around!
