this place was super crowded when we got here and i contemplated whether or not we should wait. took a chance and decided to wait approximately 30minutes for a seat. reading reviews here before i got in, i started getting cold feet hearing all the negative reviews about this joint.
the service was pretty good, staff were very polite even though it was very busy. the food also came out really quick. all our dishes came rolling out together after 15minutes. overall, the food was ok - it wasn’t mindblowingly great but was decent enough to eat and not complain. price wise, i thought it was pretty affordable. the only thing which was super expensive was the rump steak. we ordered the usual:
- agedeshi tofu: this was ok - given i just had a really good agedeshi tofu the other day this one didn’t hit the mark. however, it was still ok compared to what i’ve had in the past.
- chargrilled rump: really nicely made, this was great! sauces complemented the meat too.
- semi dried squid: this was also good - not too dry and had a good level of moisture.
- nasu dengaku: this was huge! i really miss traditional nasu dengaku... this one was ok, i wish it had some shallots on top though, it would’ve tasted much better. overall though, it was more on the traditional side to what i’ve seen lately in stores so it sort of gave me some nostalgia.
- steamed veggies: this was pretty plain and simple. had nothing much to say about this. would probably not get this again though (was trying to be healthy). it was super plain and the yuzu soy sauce didn’t really taste nice with it.
- spicy karage chicken: this was ok - i liked how crispy it came out and it actually had a tinge of spicyness to it. however, it didn’t taste like actual japanese karage and had too much batter on it.
- spicy salmon aburi: this was ok. very different to what i’m used to but still tasted pretty yummy.
overall, although it’s not the most authentic japanese you can get it hits close compared to some of the other joints in the city. the service was good, food came out quick and everything was pretty well priced (~10-~15 per dish except for the rump). i’d definitely come back here to try their hotpot... was looking around and saw heaps of people ordering this - it looked delicious!
