the bananapancakesare the best on the beach! and i can't complain about their bar either.
the only downfall is that other customers are your typical rude virginians, brunch screaming kids, and vaporing hipsters.
if you get there early, you don't have to deal with the hungover, missed morning mass crowd.

based on the reviews i had high expectations which fell woefully short. the omelet was a little rough. the avocado was starting to brown and the chicken was overcooked and simply put, bland and disappointing. the granolapancakeswere definitely good and worth trying but they weren't outstanding like i was expected. they are basically good qualitypancakeswith granola sprinkled in at the end which sits on top. everything else was just ok. the service was great and it had the feel of a hidden gem with great ambiance, just not the taste. maybe it was an off day or ordered the wrong items.

the best!. doc taylor's is the best breakfast in town, period. their menu is so well put together, they have about 8-10 signature items, 6 or so different omelettes, and a dozen or so standard egg breakfasts. they have by far the best bananapancakesi have ever had. each time i get them, they just keep getting better. everything on the menu is fresh and delicious. the staff is incredible. the kitchen is open and it is great to watch the cooks work. best in the business and super nice. doc taylor's has set the bar for me as my favorite breakfast i have ever had. thank you doc taylor's!

alas . . . overhyped. upon reading the virginian pilot's intriguing article about biscuits & gravy in the area, we decided to go to doc taylor's; finally! we have wanted to go for a long time, but a few of the times we had gone out there, there was too long of a wait. based off the pilot's story, doc taylor's gravy dish was thought to have been in the top 3 in the area according to the diversified panel. furthermore, it was priced rather low & i was also looking forward to having the dish with andouille sausage (which i have never had or thought of in the dish before). with this said, i was dead set on getting there this particular day &that is which we had accomplished.

we got there around 7:50 a.m. & were immediately seated. the staff was extremely friendly & it had a bit of a bed & breakfast feel to it . . . with a fireplace going and all. we opted to sit on the porch which was a mistake because it wasn't climate controlled which resulted in us freezing.

my wife started off with a mimosa & i a cup of coffee. the coffee was extremely strong & i had used (if memory serves me right) 4 creamers in each cup. needless to say, i didn't enjoy the coffee. my wife enjoyed her drink though. for our meal, i went with the biscuits & gravy with a side of the grilled tomato. my wife had gone for the egg's benedict & a short stack of pancakes. across the board, we were both really disappointed with the taste, temperature & presentation of our meals. the best part by far was the grilled tomatoes. the sausage dish was way too peppery; enough that you can see it in the photograph. my wife's benedict was ok . . . the hollandaise sauce was nothing to ask for the recipe about & everything else on it was consistent with other establishments' benedicts. thepancakeswere lukewarm & not committed to memory for either one of us. also disappointing was the marker board with "specials" on it. my wife originally wanted the salmon benedict, but once ordered, was told they were out & that was "yesterday's special".

all in all, the experience was good. doc taylor's has an awesome setting within walking distance to the boardwalk. it was nice driving out to the beach & eating in a local run place that has a wonderful reputation. we weren't overly impressed with our meal, but i am not willing to never go back. it fed both of us for around $23. not bad! i think had my hopes not been so high due to the article, i may have enjoyed it a bit more. the article made it sound like the biscuits & gravy were the best ever & frankly, they weren't in my opinion. just way to peppery & soupy.
