dependable, but not great. doc taylor's is the kind of place that can quickly become a favorite -- and therein is the problem. the service is frendly, and competent. the food is all of the breakfast faves, plus some (quiche, chipped beef, ray ray, etc.) competently prepared. the drink specials (screwdrivers, b marys, greyhounds, mimosas) are good, and value priced.

so what's wrong? two -- first, the menu hasn't changed in years -- no new specials, no changes (just like what change adverse h roads demands). second, thebeachlocation, and funky charm, means the place is packed in the summer. waits of up to an hour can be encountered. so either go in the off season, or ...

doc taylor's is a really coolbeachjoint. i stopped in here to meet with a client over coffee and breakfast. i must say i was pleasantly surprised. the service was very good. the atmosphere is very low key and laid back. the food was phenomenal. i had the eggs benedict. the hollandaise is fresh and the eggs were spot on. i really liked this place. i wish i had snapped some pics but couldn't because i was there in a meeting. but good news is i'm going to try and stop in next week again and hope to take some winners. done here with assurance. good eats, and cool atmosphere. nice job doc taylor's!

i've lived in vabeachmy whole life and while i have been to tautog's (their sister restaurant and next door neighbor) this was my first time at doc taylor's. well, my screwdriver was nice but my egg white omelet was not so nice. the first couple bites were done but as i cut into the center is was raw. i'm not talking undercooked either. i'm talking raw runny egg whites. stop rushing and watch your quality control. this was on a wednesday morning it was not rush time. i may try them again(accidents happen), but for now i'm just left with a bad taste in my mouth for doc's.

there were plenty of traditional breakfast items as well as healthier variations. the vegetarian quiche served with fresh fruit was a hefty serving of delicious food. doc taylor’s restaurant is an excellent breakfast choice to give you energy before heading over to the beach! doc taylor’s restaurant 207 23rd street virginia beach, va 23451     best breakfast in virginiabeachbreakfast restaurants in virginiabeachdoc taylor's

alas . . . overhyped. upon reading the virginian pilot's intriguing article about biscuits & gravy in the area, we decided to go to doc taylor's; finally! we have wanted to go for a long time, but a few of the times we had gone out there, there was too long of a wait. based off the pilot's story, doc taylor's gravy dish was thought to have been in the top 3 in the area according to the diversified panel. furthermore, it was priced rather low & i was also looking forward to having the dish with andouille sausage (which i have never had or thought of in the dish before). with this said, i was dead set on getting there this particular day &that is which we had accomplished.

we got there around 7:50 a.m. & were immediately seated. the staff was extremely friendly & it had a bit of a bed & breakfast feel to it . . . with a fireplace going and all. we opted to sit on the porch which was a mistake because it wasn't climate controlled which resulted in us freezing.

my wife started off with a mimosa & i a cup of coffee. the coffee was extremely strong & i had used (if memory serves me right) 4 creamers in each cup. needless to say, i didn't enjoy the coffee. my wife enjoyed her drink though. for our meal, i went with the biscuits & gravy with a side of the grilled tomato. my wife had gone for the egg's benedict & a short stack of pancakes. across the board, we were both really disappointed with the taste, temperature & presentation of our meals. the best part by far was the grilled tomatoes. the sausage dish was way too peppery; enough that you can see it in the photograph. my wife's benedict was ok . . . the hollandaise sauce was nothing to ask for the recipe about & everything else on it was consistent with other establishments' benedicts. the pancakes were lukewarm & not committed to memory for either one of us. also disappointing was the marker board with "specials" on it. my wife originally wanted the salmon benedict, but once ordered, was told they were out & that was "yesterday's special".

all in all, the experience was good. doc taylor's has an awesome setting within walking distance to the boardwalk. it was nice driving out to thebeach& eating in a local run place that has a wonderful reputation. we weren't overly impressed with our meal, but i am not willing to never go back. it fed both of us for around $23. not bad! i think had my hopes not been so high due to the article, i may have enjoyed it a bit more. the article made it sound like the biscuits & gravy were the best ever & frankly, they weren't in my opinion. just way to peppery & soupy.

a fantastic breakfast/lunch place (finally). it's so hard to find a decent breakfast or lunch in virginia beach. nothing wrong with waffle house or ihop, but there are only so many rooty tooty fresh n' fruities i can consume in a given month.

enter: doc taylor's.

located a stone's throw away from thebeachin an oldbeachhome, the setting of the restaurant suits its style very well: the atmosphere is very homey and casual, allowing the diner to relax amongst the visible controlled chaos going on in the open kitchen. the closed patio also adds a nice touch, and in the winter, seats near the fireplace give it more of a touch of home.

service has always been pleasant and timely, no matter how long the wait is. most of the selections are what you'd expect from a breakfast place - pancakes, eggs with choice of meat, etc, are found. the difference here is that they actually do a good job by being thorough and can get the food out quickly, which is something other local breakfast places should take note on. other choices like "the stroke" add a nice element of humor and are just as delicious. all selections are very affordable, which is a hard find on the oceanfront.

breakfast and lunch done right with consistently excellent service - the reasons i continue to go every time i'm in virginia beach.
