the good (food), the bad (ambiance) & the ugly (dessert). i am a playful eater! i like to get to know my server and have fun in my dining experience. that being said, i believe it is safe to say that our server brad just did not know what to do with me...
enough about that...
i started off with the crow cocktail which was amazing! i had to make myself drink it slow because it's main ingredient is rye whiskey and this was the first stop of the night.
for appetizers, we had the baked rockefeller & jumbo shrimp cocktail which was also very good. the flavors of the baked rockefeller were well infused and complemented each other well.
for my main entree, i ordered the stuffed baked potato with beef brisket. this is where things start to go downhill. the potato had a reheated taste and was not evenly cooked prior to stuffing it with all of the yummy goodness. it was hard to eat the potato based on the old taste and so i just focused on the toppings which were good.
i ordered the potato because i had to have room for the bread pudding which i had been salivating over since we sat down and i went to peruse the dessert offerings.
the choice of bread was good; however, whoever prepared this dish did not compress the bread in the baking dish which is a recipe for disaster when making bread pudding (too much air). as a result, the texture of the bread was mushy and gummy - yuck. the mixture that is poured over the bread before cooking was "awesome sauce", i loved it, as was the bourbon vanilla sauce that was served on top which was perfect. sadly, i would not buy again.
just like me, my two friends did not finish their entrees and almost half went into the garbage. and the birthday girl who got the free apple cobbler was very disappointed.
lastly, we were sat in the couples section which is very private and you can't people watch at all! three friends celebrating a birthday want to see and be seen!
the next time i go to doc crow's, i will be sticking with drinks and appetizers. those, that got right! i will also request seating in the very front or the very back!

wow! this place is wonderful!! my husband and i checked it out last night and at first ordered the seasoned fried oysters and they were out of this world! they were so fresh and the crispy coating over the oysters was fantastic! we then split the smokehouse sampler with pulled pork, st. louis style ribs and beef brisket. everything was moist, full of flavor and delicious! we ordered two sides, lima beans and collared greens...both were really good. then we finished our dinner with an oyster shooter...wow! kind of like a lemony bloody mary with a fresh oyster...really on point! we are already planning our next visit to doc crows!! what a treat :)

quick & tasty dinner. i read the reviews and i was not sure about going but i wanted to try some new items and not rely soley on the negative reviews. so my friend and i went on a tues night with a friend. granted it was the coldest night seen in louisville so that may have been a reason why the restaurant was not crowded, but it was not empty either. it had a nice size crowd, but really no need for the reservation i put in for 615. we arrive about 5 mins late and were seated immediately. the waiter was very attentive and responded with all requests in a timely manner. i ordered a drink and appetizers as soon as we sat down at 6:34. i don't usually drink bourbon drinks so i wasn't thrilled about the drink but i still drink it. it was my taste buds and not the actual drink . appetizers came out promptly and we placed our food order and that too came out before we finished our appetizers which were the fried green tomatoes and pulled pork tacos, which filled us up! i had the shrimp and grits and my friend had the catfish poboy, and we loved them both! the gravy used in the shrimp and grits was very flavorful and the shrimp were of large size and plentiful. the fish was tender and crunch, and seasoned perfectly. everything was hot, tasty, and big portion sizes. we ended up taking the food home for leftovers. we were out of the restaurant by 718 to catch our 730 play down the street. all in all it was a very good experience and i will be back to try more dishes.

everything great... other than the food. ambience: 9out of10
service: bar staff were knowledgable, friendly and v good 9 out of 10
drinks menu: outstanding list of beers and bourbons, 9 out of 10
food: by comparison a terrible, terrible letdown: i had the sampler and sent it back: overcooked, dry, tasteless, card-board-y.

to be fair to the management, they comp'd the dish i sent back and were very reasonable... nevertheless, this is the worst bbq food i've tasted across several us states. poor factory, bbq with no care or passion whatsoever.

if the kitchen cold match the rest of the offering, this place would be very good.

mediocre. the place isn't bad, it's just not that good. i had the pulled pork supper. it was okay, but just that. it wasn't smokey at all. it could have been made in the oven. my colleague agreed as well. he also had pulled pork and ordered the brisket to go before he tried anything. once again, not bad, just not good either.

btw, the service and atmosphere were both good.

we went there last evening for my 24th birthday dinner. we were very pleased, the staff was friendly and our table was ready on time. they also have a great atmosphere for kids which we always look for. we had the fried green tomatoes and beef brisket tacos as appetizers they were stellar. i ordered the bubba and was very pleased! there prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is a blast, we will definitely be going back.

my new louisville favorite!. great atmosphere, great staff. great food. we had no idea how popular this place was so i would recommend planning ahead and making a reservation. we had to wait about 45 minutes for a table, but it was not problem. we were able to sit at the bar and have some great drinks and heap'n chips with pulled pork. casey was our bartender and he had great recommendations on food and drinks. everything he suggested was amazing! by the time we were able to make it to our table and met with our server mara (who was also amazing) we weren't that hungry, but we all shared a sampler and several sides. it was the perfect amount of food. we can't wait to return and try out more of the menu.

bad ribs. because they were busy, they served me a half rack of pork ribs that seemed to have been cooked days before. very dry. i complained, and they did compensate me, but i wanted them to know that they were trying to serve an inferior item.

got the portabella/fried green tomato "burger." it was great! the waiter was a little over zealous though- he would refill my water every time i took a sip.

this is one of my favorite restaurants. great environment, unique setting, and tremendous food. great for a date, a family gathering, or a spot to watch uk/ul at the bar. love their chicken wings, some of the best in town. their brisket sandwich is also great!

i travel to louisville for work a lot. i'm also kind of a food geek. this is my favorite restaurant in town. eaten here close to 20 times. service is hit or miss but atmosphere is great and food speaks for itself. i usually order lima beans, wedge salad and mussels. the combo is like $20. highly recommended. filet is also good.

great food!. i haven't tried much on their menu because every time my husband and i go, we get the same thing, the brisket taco's. they are to die for! i get the mac and cheese and he gets the sweet potato fries and both are amazing! the other food looks great but we go there knowing we won't be disappointed. they are pretty quick too!
