excellent experience. the wife and i dined at cotton blues a few weeks back and had one of our most enjoyable dinning experience in hattiesburg in some time. the culinary trio of antonie anthony, zach walters and shaun davis are on to something. located inside a very nice building that once housed a wintzel's oyster house, the location has been re-purposed into unique restaurant experience.
a decent location and great building would mean very little if they couldn't deliver in the kitchen, and trust me these guys deliver!
the menu is southern comfort food for a slightly more sophisticated pallet. we began our mean with a order of fried cheese curds, not exactly a southern stable about as comforting as comfort food gets, but the twist was the sauces they served with the cheese curds - a sweet tomato jam, a creole mustard sauce and a blueberry compote. the cheese curds were perfectly prepared but the sauces were exceptional, especially the blueberry compote.
i ordered one of my all time favorite dishes - shrimp and grits. my wife ordered the organic southern fried chicken.
their interpretation of shrimp and grits was very unique fresh gulf shrimp and pork belly in a crushed tomato and okra stew served over grits that were infused with a sharp boursin cheese. i also ordered a side of fresh greens.
the shrimp and grits were very good, a smaller plate but just right, the greens were excellent as they had some more of that sinful pork belly cooked with them.
my wife reports that her fried chicken was as close to her dearly departed grandmother as any she has had since her passing. the sides of fresh mashed potatos and gravy and butter beans were well above average for any resturant.
we split a slice of house made cheese cake that was as good as you'll find anywhere in south mississippi.
in all an excellent experience and a welcome addition to the food scene in hattiesburg.
