the highway / hwy

had a dinner with family prior to a jazz sa night, with nazareth catholic performing early on.  very friendly staff and anicedecor in the dining room. meals ordered and served in a timely manner.  i had the 'burger' which presented the burger challenge of how does one eat a tall burger?  brioche bun along with usual burger, bacon, etc.  nice fries with it and anicemeal overall.  the friendly staff and thenicedecor tap it up to a 4.  happily come back some time.

found this "hotel" to be somewhat snobby and the service was rude.
stopped by with a friend for a drink and was told that we were in the wrong bar and had to move. this was ok but a little strange. as my friend is a beer reviewer/taster he put me onto a a grey brew call hop thief. the first one was greatniceand clear with a fruity taste. however when we ordered the second round the beer we were presented with was cloudy and did not appear to be the same. when we asked we were told that this was how it came out from the tap. well my friend asked if he could please exchange it with a fresh one the "bar staff" said it would come out the same. my friend then explained that this was the end of the keg and should not be served. well the bar person then said it always like this.
in all we will not be going back. the beer was $9 for a pint which is way overpriced for this.

what is going on out there with the price of pub meals? some of them are really getting up there, matching restaurant prices and some menu items are close to fine dining prices? and the highway is no different. some menu items were priced within the pub range that anyone would expect, like burgers, pizzas, wings etc, but when i saw the specials board, which had a rib special on for $42, well i have to say, i was a little gob smacked, jaw dropping surprised! chicken maryland at $28? this is chicken maryland peeps, not duck! on the other hand, you can get 300g scotch fillet for $36 with accompaniments? go figure?

for these prices, you still have to collect your own meal from the pass in the kitchen when your buzz buzz thingo goes off!

however, this really is a veryniceplace to have a drink outside and it’s quite pretty in the evening, they have live bands as well.

we ordered steak sliders and buffalo wings for lunch. sliders were dry, brioche buns not fresh, lucky we had the blue cheese sauce from the wings and added it to the sliders for moisture. a good amount of wings were on the plate, but the sauce was terrible, tasted like plain old tomato sauce, no vinegar hit at all. wings were also dry. blue cheese sauce saved the day!

will return for band and drinks, but probably not for the food!

chilli for charity has anice(fire) ring to it and it's happening at the highway at 290 anzac highway, plympton. tempting palates was invited to taste the menu which is available throughout august. for every meal purchased $1.00 will be donated to the hutt st centre which is a charity helping people facing homelessness to rebuild their lives. although the food and drinks were provided free of charge, it was consensus amongst everyone at the table to make a donation to help kick start the campaign.

good food, great atmosphere. my boyfriend and i went to the highway on saturday and it was packed! we had to sit outside because there was no room inside, our own fault... we didn't make a reservation. it's okay though, we sat near a heater! the atmosphere at the highway was awesome. they had a large screen on which the football game was screened and everyone was drinking, eating or socialising! the food was nice, i had a chicken schnitzel with pepper sauce and my boyfriend got the ribs. he let me try some of the ribs and they were amazing!!! so tender and the bbq sauce they put on them was to die for. he let me dip some of my schnitzel into the sauce because it was heaps nicer than the pepper sauce i got. the schnitzel itself wasnicebut i've definitely had better pepper sauce before. great place to go for a good pub meal and a great atmosphere

i came here last night with my partner to eat anicemeal but we got far from that i orderd the crispy chicken breast number 1 if the menu promises a crispy chicken breast thats what i would expect not a soft soggy fatty bit of chicken fat on top complained to staff and got a replacement my partner got the roast for $28 all he got was 3 peices of pork fat and onions it was way over priced for what we got, the only thumbs up where the replacement schnitzel and service was good.

had the parma.niceenough but the cheese could have had more flavour. the steak parma didn't taste much different from the chicken though.

we went to the highway for lunch to celebrate my sister-in-law's birthday. there were 7 adults 3 kids and a baby, all but one enjoyed their meal, my daughter didn't like the kids pasta and i am not sure why they chose a capsicum base for kids, would imagine a tomato base would be more popular. the wait staff were all very friendly and did their jobs well and quickly. the decor is great with someniceart on the walls and all fittings are high quality. the menu has a huge range, as you expect at a pub, but they seemed to do the variety of food well. great for larger groups as there will be something for everyone. we'll go back again.
