for the fourth year running, and for a fortnight each year, thehighwaygoes a bit on the wild side by incorporating game meats, such as wallaby, buffalo and venison, into their menu. initially, i thought the menu was to promote some sort of sporting event, but it actually refers to animals that are hunted for sport or food. thehighwaydoesn’t go out and catch the game meats, but instead sources from something wild, a local game meat supplier.

game season is back at thehighwayhotel and i’m not talking about footy! this annual affair has been popular enough that it’s now in its fifth year. a new game menu has been announced and is ready to challenge your palate.game season is all about game meat. now that’s the kind of season a foodie is interested in. we were invited for a preview of the menu so read on to see what you’re in for this year. all produce has been sourced from local suppliers something wild in adelaide central markets and my butcher.

this week, we were invited to attend the official ‘game season’ menu tasting at thehighwayhotel, situated on anzachighwayjust out of the city. in its fourth year running, the highway’s ‘game season’ encompasses all that is unique and out-of-the-ordinary, offering innovative dishes of all different types of meats including the likes of kangaroo, buffalo, wallaby and more.

it's all fun and game at  thehighwayhotel! it's that time again when thehighwaybring out their popular game season menu starting from may 16, running only 2 weeks, until may 30th. so you better get a move on and book your table now if you want to experience it! tempting palates had a sneak peek of the menu and we can confirm it's not only for game lovers but also those who are a little less adventurous.

thehighwayhotel is really bringing their a-game on with their new ‘game season’ menu. we were lucky enough to be invited to their tasting night where they showcased the goods. the season kicks off may 16th through to 30th and may i suggest you join the team while you can. the night was kicked off with kangaroo tartare. served on an organic buckwheat cracker, a slice of radish and puffed rice, the kangaroo tartare was rich and velvety. the wasabi crème sealed the dish and gave it a burst of fresh creamy spice.

we had a large group catch up at the highway. even though thehighwaywas really busy that night with a lot of large groups we did not have to wait long for meals. the service staff were excellent.

what is going on out there with the price of pub meals? some of them are really getting up there, matching restaurant prices and some menu items are close to fine dining prices? and thehighwayis no different. some menu items were priced within the pub range that anyone would expect, like burgers, pizzas, wings etc, but when i saw the specials board, which had a rib special on for $42, well i have to say, i was a little gob smacked, jaw dropping surprised! chicken maryland at $28? this is chicken maryland peeps, not duck! on the other hand, you can get 300g scotch fillet for $36 with accompaniments? go figure?

for these prices, you still have to collect your own meal from the pass in the kitchen when your buzz buzz thingo goes off!

however, this really is a very nice place to have a drink outside and it’s quite pretty in the evening, they have live bands as well.

we ordered steak sliders and buffalo wings for lunch. sliders were dry, brioche buns not fresh, lucky we had the blue cheese sauce from the wings and added it to the sliders for moisture. a good amount of wings were on the plate, but the sauce was terrible, tasted like plain old tomato sauce, no vinegar hit at all. wings were also dry. blue cheese sauce saved the day!

will return for band and drinks, but probably not for the food!

this place is revolting. supporting this venue would be supporting discrimination. we live in the city and headed out to do some shopping on anzachighwaytoday and thought we would try this venue for a quick lunch. we chose not to go into the restaurant area as even though lunch time we were not really dressed for this so we sat in the indoor/outdoor area. a female staff person promptly proceeded to embarrass us, telling us there was a dress code focusing on my husbands 'tracksuit' pants (they are black sports pants) when there were multiple other people in the venue dressed very casually including wearing thongs! we both work in human services and very familiar with the treatment that people receive due to other people's value judgements. this staff person decided that we were not the kind of human beings that should be served. no, we were not dressed up but we were both wearing clean, casual clothes, does this mean we cannot buy lunch in a pub? no it doesn't we went back into the city and to a hotel close to home that can provide customer service. we have never been refused anywhere and my husband turns 40 next month, so we know it is not about us at all, this is a venue that condones discrimination

mushroom month has returned to thehighwayfor its sixth year. kicking off from the 1st of july, they are offering up a veritable haven for lovers of fungi. swiss brown, king brown, porcini, shemeji, enoki, oyster – all doing there bit and bringing their distinctive flavours, form and texture to the 5 dishes on offer.

thehighwayis into its sixth year of holding its mushroom month. launching on 1 july and running for the entirety of the month i was lucky enough to be invited to the tasting night where they presented the special mushroom themed menu. swiss brown mushroom and courgette roulade with smoked tomato bearnaise, parmesan crisp and pickled pearl onion. the roulade was light, moist and juicy. the pickled onion provided a good tangy contrast to the sweet tomato bearnaise and the parmesan crisp gave the dish a beautiful salty crunch. an amazing start to the night ahead.

it's that time again where thehighwayhotel brings you mushroom month. we love mushrooms and no one has a better variety of dishes than the highway. tempting palates were invited to try a few of the dishes on offer and we were in mushroom heaven!.

thehighwaylaunched their new winter menu last week which featured a whole-lotta mushrooms – making hump day more bearable – and nutritious. located on 290 anzachighwayin plympton, you too can grab a warm, hearty meal from this fancy pub this season and not feel at all guilty about it! after being left energised and feeling healthy after consuming the many different kinds of mushroom varieties, we can proudly say we 100% recommend the whole-heartedly-made meals.

chilli for charity has a nice (fire) ring to it and it's happening at thehighwayat 290 anzac highway, plympton. tempting palates was invited to taste the menu which is available throughout august. for every meal purchased $1.00 will be donated to the hutt st centre which is a charity helping people facing homelessness to rebuild their lives. although the food and drinks were provided free of charge, it was consensus amongst everyone at the table to make a donation to help kick start the campaign.

good food, great atmosphere. my boyfriend and i went to thehighwayon saturday and it was packed! we had to sit outside because there was no room inside, our own fault... we didn't make a reservation. it's okay though, we sat near a heater! the atmosphere at thehighwaywas awesome. they had a large screen on which the football game was screened and everyone was drinking, eating or socialising! the food was nice, i had a chicken schnitzel with pepper sauce and my boyfriend got the ribs. he let me try some of the ribs and they were amazing!!! so tender and the bbq sauce they put on them was to die for. he let me dip some of my schnitzel into the sauce because it was heaps nicer than the pepper sauce i got. the schnitzel itself was nice but i've definitely had better pepper sauce before. great place to go for a good pub meal and a great atmosphere

thehighwayhas won a stream of aha awards and rightfully so. since the renovations back in ’06 (i’m guessing here!) they have drawn crowds of diners and party-goers. the hotel boasts a huge beer garden area (heated for those colder months!) with a monstrous screen to watch your favourite sport. ( the hwy ) 8. casablabla (cocktail bar) casablabla has a very inviting feel to it, drawing inspiration from morocco, turkey, bali and cambodia. sit back, relax with a cocktail and enjoy the salsa and flamenco dancers that regularly hit the d-floor. ( casablabla ) 9. the wheatsheaf hotel (front bar/pub) the wheaty pub is a hidden gem for all the craft beer aficionados out there. regularly hosting craft beer launches, meet the brewer sessions and more. they have a pretty impressive range of beers available so you’ll find something that you love. ( the wheatsheaf hotel ) 10. cantina sociale (wine bar) i’m yet to visit but it has made the top 10 due to all the positive reviews i’ve been hearing la
