for the fourth year running, and for a fortnight each year, the highway goes a bit on the wild side by incorporating game meats, such as wallaby, buffalo and venison, into their menu. initially, i thought themenuwas to promote some sort of sporting event, but it actually refers to animals that are hunted for sport or food. the highway doesn’t go out and catch the game meats, but instead sources from something wild, a local game meat supplier.

game season is back at the highway hotel and i’m not talking about footy! this annual affair has been popular enough that it’s now in its fifth year. a new gamemenuhas been announced and is ready to challenge your palate.game season is all about game meat. now that’s the kind of season a foodie is interested in. we were invited for a preview of themenuso read on to see what you’re in for this year. all produce has been sourced from local suppliers something wild in adelaide central markets and my butcher.

this week, we were invited to attend the official ‘game season’menutasting at the highway hotel, situated on anzac highway just out of the city. in its fourth year running, the highway’s ‘game season’ encompasses all that is unique and out-of-the-ordinary, offering innovative dishes of all different types of meats including the likes of kangaroo, buffalo, wallaby and more.

it's all fun and game at  the highway hotel! it's that time again when the highway bring out their popular game seasonmenustarting from may 16, running only 2 weeks, until may 30th. so you better get a move on and book your table now if you want to experience it! tempting palates had a sneak peek of themenuand we can confirm it's not only for game lovers but also those who are a little less adventurous.

what is going on out there with the price of pub meals? some of them are really getting up there, matching restaurant prices and somemenuitems are close to fine dining prices? and the highway is no different. somemenuitems were priced within the pub range that anyone would expect, like burgers, pizzas, wings etc, but when i saw the specials board, which had a rib special on for $42, well i have to say, i was a little gob smacked, jaw dropping surprised! chicken maryland at $28? this is chicken maryland peeps, not duck! on the other hand, you can get 300g scotch fillet for $36 with accompaniments? go figure?

for these prices, you still have to collect your own meal from the pass in the kitchen when your buzz buzz thingo goes off!

however, this really is a very nice place to have a drink outside and it’s quite pretty in the evening, they have live bands as well.

we ordered steak sliders and buffalo wings for lunch. sliders were dry, brioche buns not fresh, lucky we had the blue cheese sauce from the wings and added it to the sliders for moisture. a good amount of wings were on the plate, but the sauce was terrible, tasted like plain old tomato sauce, no vinegar hit at all. wings were also dry. blue cheese sauce saved the day!

will return for band and drinks, but probably not for the food!

the highway launched their new wintermenulast week which featured a whole-lotta mushrooms – making hump day more bearable – and nutritious. located on 290 anzac highway in plympton, you too can grab a warm, hearty meal from this fancy pub this season and not feel at all guilty about it! after being left energised and feeling healthy after consuming the many different kinds of mushroom varieties, we can proudly say we 100% recommend the whole-heartedly-made meals.

chilli for charity has a nice (fire) ring to it and it's happening at the highway at 290 anzac highway, plympton. tempting palates was invited to taste themenuwhich is available throughout august. for every meal purchased $1.00 will be donated to the hutt st centre which is a charity helping people facing homelessness to rebuild their lives. although the food and drinks were provided free of charge, it was consensus amongst everyone at the table to make a donation to help kick start the campaign.

easy for a midweek dinner with the girls. quick and friendly service. themenuis pub grub, with lovely pizzas too, all of a considtantly good quality. counter service, and the give you a buzzer thingo to let you know when your food is ready. the out swig beer garden area is light and comfortable and means you can sit and enjoy. the place, for its size, has a great vibe.

went here for a sunday lunch with the girls. thought the atmosphere outside was nice. themenuselection is poor, over priced and to top it off you have to collect your meal when it's ready!

i won't be going back, plenty of nicer places on that side of town that aren't over priced.

i came here last night with my partner to eat a nice meal but we got far from that i orderd the crispy chicken breast number 1 if themenupromises a crispy chicken breast thats what i would expect not a soft soggy fatty bit of chicken fat on top complained to staff and got a replacement my partner got the roast for $28 all he got was 3 peices of pork fat and onions it was way over priced for what we got, the only thumbs up where the replacement schnitzel and service was good.

the stranger and i got invited to the highway on the corner of anzac highway and marion road a couple of weeks ago to sample their new summermenuproduced by the highway’s head chef, nick finn and his team with our meals and drinks paid for ( – this does not influence my post whatsoever). this season, nick has sourced more south australian produce and incorporated it into themenucreating flavour combinations inspired by his global travels. hwy. …food & drink upon arrival, we were quickly attended to and seated with both drinks and foodmenusupplied. the bistro area was open, modern looking and inviting; you could say that it was a little bit fan-cay~, a far cry from your typical pub/cafe dining areas. some drinks to start off with… sparkling crisp bubbled water to share… to ol ‘baltic frontier‘ ipa denmark; $12.00 and an import beer for the fella. 24hr sous vide pork belly; $15.00 when have we ever not ordered a pork belly on the menu? a really interesting flavour combo of 24hr sou

disappointed. my partner and i went at the hotel yesterday thought of the highway as being a multi award wining hotel it would cater to good food.but after looking at themenui was not that impressed as my partner and i both don't eat seafood and i don't eat beef which literally left me having only the bbq chicken pizza which wasn't that great and the salad which my partner ordered was just no good.

overall i would rate the food below average and choice available on themenuis not much.

went for a sunday lunch.menusystem confusing as mainmenustated available all the time although we were told to select from the smaller menu. service was good. staff polite. food reasonably quick approx 20 minute wait. we had various dishes:- ribs, burger, schnitzel and fish plus garlic bread - all hot and delicious.

stick to the bistro, greatmenuthat delivers great food

fail wings. clearly the person that put buffalo wings on themenuhad never actually had one. buffalo wings are not just grilled wings with nepolitan sauce. tasted like dipping a plain boring wing in boring tomato based pasta sauce, crap!
