was so looking forward to eating at this highly spoken about restaurant in the heart of bree street. i was however highly disappointed with the reception i received by the manager. after being placed at atablenear the kitchen (which was inevitably warm) we attempted to move thetablefurther away from the kitchen only to be met by a rude and unhelpful manager who insisted we had “overstepped the line”. the waitrons then attempted to help us after our unpleasant encounter with the manager. very disappointed.

what a great evening. we went here for a birthday dinner, just two of us, and were treated out of our socks. there was a problem with our booking but we were treated to complimentary bar snacks while we waited for atableto become available and could chill in the waiting area with wine.
good service, well thought out menu and food prepared with care and love. i had the kingklip - highly recommended, and my boyfriend's duck was rich and filling.
if you like quality food and a pretty decent price, this is your place.

great restaurant with a fabulous vibe. always seems to be busy with excellent food, service and fair pricing for the quality received. seared tuna salad a winner as is the pork belly. highly recommended and if you can't get atable, eat at the bar counter, it's great fun and perfect to eye out the masses.

i was very grateful to get a last minute booking here on friday night, given how notoriously hard it is to get atablewithout one. there's been a lot of hype about the black sheep and i've heard countless good things from people i know who have gone. our booking was at 20:30, a bit late, but it was a friday so why not? i ordered the rainbow trout gravadlax to start and my partner had the pork loin with capers. my trout was very fresh and the small mustard sauce on the side was a lovely combination of flavours, but my partner's pork loin definitely took the cake with its creamy sauce and capers. for mains, i had the pork belly with crackling while my partner had the seared rainbow trout. we ordered onion rings and chips as sides. the pork belly was unlike any pork belly i've every tasted. it was like butter that melted in my mouth. the crackling, however, had that flavour and texture that made you wonder if it hadn't been cooled and or kept hot in the oven as it was quite dry. sadly, my partner's salmon did not live up to the same hype. seared it was not, and i'm afraid it seemed to have been left a little too long in the pan. despite that, he did enjoy it, but sadly was not quite what he was expecting as it was entirely cooked through. their wine list has a good selection but the markup seems a bit extreme. all in all, i'd go back for their pork belly and pork loin starter, but perhaps i'd take my own wine or not order a bottle.

not being from cape town, i hadn't heard of the restaurant when i was offered to join friends and family at the black sheep. i was told that this booking was made a month prior to the date due to the popularity restaurant so it was an invite i was definitely not going to turn down.

everyone had hyped up the event so i had some big expectations of what i would be treated to later that evening.

i can comfortably say that all the hype was clearly justified based on my whole dining experience that evening.

the downstairs seating area is quite intimate overlooking the bustling kloof street. the restaurant feeds off and adds to that energy.

i had the hanger steak with the thick cut chips and it was absolutely incredible! the steak was cooked to perfection and the chips were so perfectly done that i just didn't want the meal to end. servings were really generous and some of the ladies at thetabledidn't manage to finish their meal. i wasn't complaining as that meant more tasters for me. although all the other dishes were also really good, i don't think they even came close to the hanger steak.

the staff were friendly and efficient which always adds to the dining experience.

i really enjoyed my meal there and highly recommend the restaurant.

we celebrated my sister's birthday at the black sheep in kloof street. we arrived there earlier than our booking in order to have drinks before dinner and sat upstairs in a lounge area (which had a tv showing the cricket to some people's delight). the restaurant was very full (you have to book) but it never felt too busy and there was a good, friendly atmosphere.

our waiter (i didn't catch his name unfortunately) was very friendly and attentive in serving our rather large table.

the menu (written on a blackboard in the restaurant) has a wide variety of options - as a result of which deciding between menu items took a while as they all looked so tempting.

i ordered the pork belly as a main with sweet potato puree. the pork was absolutely delicious and the portion size was very generous. others really enjoyed the trout, hake and the quail.

the mains range between r110 and r165 so, for me at least, it is on the more expensive side of the restaurants i have been to but it was completely worth it!

the only reason i'm not giving 5 stars is that gratuity (because of ourtablesize) of 12% was added which i felt was a bit steep.

overall, a really delicious meal and awesome evening. i'll definitely go back!

based in busy, funky kloof street black sheep fits right in! cool menu written on a big chalk board - i assume this means they change the menu according to availability and season. great service. complimentary crostini with pate which was a mix of anchovies and capers - very different. my seared tuna was out of this world. others at mytablehad leek and potato soup, fish curry, eggplant, and various starters (as mains). all beautifully presented. the rhubarb crumble for dessert was an absolute treat!! would highly recommend. bookings essential.

what a really fab evening with friends at this great restaurant! big selection of quality modern meals made with care - good choices for veggies, fish or meat eaters. i had the sardine and tomato stack with crunchy olive crumb- delish! mains was the seared tuna with fennel and sautéed potato with lemon and caper dressing- lip smacking! we paired our meals with vondeling rosé- lovely! thetableservice was perfect, you know, drinks always full, things always dealt with, with least possible fuss, very professional. the vibe is cool-sophisticated, upmarket without the pretence, very comfortable. we loved and will definitely go back for a special night out!

had a great time at the black sheep, had heard rave reviews and it lived up to them quite nicely. gave a low score only cause we had to wait a little bit for ourtabledespite reservation and waited quite some time for the main for atableof 5. otherwise great service, okay food. pork belly's good, but served asian style with hoisin spice (not my personal taste) and chunky veggies that did nothing for the dish, but my brownie dessert made up for it! worth noting it was quite busy - friday night, but definitely worth a visit!

the black sheep restaurant is a great new place in kloof street, serving interesting delicious fresh food in a trendy venue with good vibes and a stunning view oftablemountain.

chef jonathan japha certainly knows how to wow the taste buds. so far, after two lunches, i can highly recommend his refreshing gazpacho, scrumptious roast lamb & cous cous salad, subtle polenta cake with mushrooms, & exotic asian beef with crying dragon sauce . something for everyone and, knowing johnny, everything else on the eclectic menu is bound to be equally good, as are the local artisan beers and mojitos

so hurry over and try it out for yourself.
