the black sheep is arestaurantthat has the laid back vibe of kloof street, making it seem deceptively simple with chalk board menus and minimalistic furnishings. it is anything but simple! the wine list is super, we opted for a glass each of the beaumont chenin blanc which was absolutely perfect for sipping throughout our meals. the “bar snacks” are beautifully presented, elegant flavour combinations. we tried the prego steak bruschetta and the jalapeño croquettes. both were amazing. i found that the portions are definitely meant for sharing as they are quite generous in size. the prego steak was lovely and far more delicate than any prego sauce i’ve tried before. the croquettes had a slight bite, i’d highly recommend these! as a main we asked to share the yellowfish curry. the chef was kind enough to serve each half on separate plates. the curry was delicate, not too hot and very balanced in flavours. i particularly liked the addition of brinjal. our service was good, although my one gripe was that it did take a while to receive the meals and we struggled to get our waiters attention. other than that -the black sheep is definitely a must!

we had such a great time here. the food was delicious and the service was excellent. the staff made us comfortable and offered us drinks while we waited for our table. we got the warthog curry and herbed chicken. both were excellent with really large portions. therestaurantwas buzzing throughout and had a great atmosphere.

was so looking forward to eating at this highly spoken aboutrestaurantin the heart of bree street. i was however highly disappointed with the reception i received by the manager. after being placed at a table near the kitchen (which was inevitably warm) we attempted to move the table further away from the kitchen only to be met by a rude and unhelpful manager who insisted we had “overstepped the line”. the waitrons then attempted to help us after our unpleasant encounter with the manager. very disappointed.

my absolute favouriterestaurantin cape town - never disappoints!
booking well in advance is essential - this place is popular for good reason.
the dishes are fresh, tasty and indulgent without being that usual cape town thing of being too finicky or pretentious. the menu is a novel take on international standards and expresses creativity in the superbly matched flavours in each dish. the desserts are a warm and seductive treat not to be missed!

wow what an amazing experience, thisrestaurantis 10/10! therestaurantis on 3 levels, it is small and intimate and well decorated. we were welcomed on our arrival by the manager richard who landed up being our waiter. he has studied at top international hotel schools and knows his shit! apparently the owner is one of the chefs and spends a lot of his time meeting suppliers and sourcing the best quality ingredients from the farms around cape town. for starters we went all out and ordered one of everything. for me by far the best was the tuna noodle dish, i had to order a second portion it was so good! also the watermelon and feta salad was insane and it goes well with the tuna starter. for mains i had the deboned chicken legs with coriander, lime and white basmati rice , was the best chicken meal i’ve ever had. for dessert the chocolate brownie 😍 the almond tart was also a winner. the only problem is that they change the menu regularly so these items may not be there for very long but i’m sure anything these guys put together will be amazing. thanks black sheep for an amazing last dinner in cape town and will see you again soon!

thisrestaurantseems to aaaalways be busy and apparently our last minute booking for 8 guests was not too much to ask! the manager graciously made some space for us and i’m so glad he did. of the 8, two of us decided to get two starters and a main so as to try as much as possible. the food is really really tasty, once again the pork belly being a stand out, the calamari was delicious too. really thorough, friendly and super attentive service.

i was so impressed with this place. way more people arrived than we had booked for (20 when booked for 12). they created a special menu for us which was absolutely incredible and the service was amazing. the management were so accommodating even though therestaurantwas packed and we had a fabulous evening with the most delicious food. i highly recommend this restaurant!

the black sheep is an awesome spot near the top of kloof. therestauranthas an open layout with a great buzz. the bar area is really impressive and there is also a cool lounge area upstairs where you can relax before eating. did i mention that the views from therestaurantare amazing!

i really went out the box with my starter and had 'jellied pigs head terrine with pickled radish apple and mustard salad and toast' - i was apprehensive but it was really delicious! i also had the trout which i also really enjoyed. the menu is up on a big black board and changes from day to day.

i really look forward to visiting again soon!

great and trendy spot for dinner, lovely vibe and the food is good. chalkboard menu has quite a bit to offer, and everything is different and yummy. if you have some friends in town and want to take them to a funky cape townrestaurantwith great food, come to the black sheep. one of those restaurants that feels cozy in winter and airy and open in summer.

not being from cape town, i hadn't heard of therestaurantwhen i was offered to join friends and family at the black sheep. i was told that this booking was made a month prior to the date due to the popularityrestaurantso it was an invite i was definitely not going to turn down.

everyone had hyped up the event so i had some big expectations of what i would be treated to later that evening.

i can comfortably say that all the hype was clearly justified based on my whole dining experience that evening.

the downstairs seating area is quite intimate overlooking the bustling kloof street. therestaurantfeeds off and adds to that energy.

i had the hanger steak with the thick cut chips and it was absolutely incredible! the steak was cooked to perfection and the chips were so perfectly done that i just didn't want the meal to end. servings were really generous and some of the ladies at the table didn't manage to finish their meal. i wasn't complaining as that meant more tasters for me. although all the other dishes were also really good, i don't think they even came close to the hanger steak.

the staff were friendly and efficient which always adds to the dining experience.

i really enjoyed my meal there and highly recommend the restaurant.

we celebrated my sister's birthday at the black sheep in kloof street. we arrived there earlier than our booking in order to have drinks before dinner and sat upstairs in a lounge area (which had a tv showing the cricket to some people's delight). therestaurantwas very full (you have to book) but it never felt too busy and there was a good, friendly atmosphere.

our waiter (i didn't catch his name unfortunately) was very friendly and attentive in serving our rather large table.

the menu (written on a blackboard in the restaurant) has a wide variety of options - as a result of which deciding between menu items took a while as they all looked so tempting.

i ordered the pork belly as a main with sweet potato puree. the pork was absolutely delicious and the portion size was very generous. others really enjoyed the trout, hake and the quail.

the mains range between r110 and r165 so, for me at least, it is on the more expensive side of the restaurants i have been to but it was completely worth it!

the only reason i'm not giving 5 stars is that gratuity (because of our table size) of 12% was added which i felt was a bit steep.

overall, a really delicious meal and awesome evening. i'll definitely go back!

i had the pleasure of eating lunch here last week. having eaten at thisrestauranta number of times, i know what to expect, but the fact that it never fails to excite makes it a needle in a haystack of overpriced city bowl mediocrity.

the venue is stylish yet comfortable, the service is friendly and not "in your face", the beer and wine selections are eclectic and thoughtful, and the food is simply jawdroppingly good. we had the hanger steak and thick cut fries (my vote for best steak in cape town) and the sheep burger, which was absolutely amazing.

the place can get very busy, so i would imagine booking is a must, but it really is one of the nicest places in cape town for an informal and relaxed place to eat some unbelievable food.
