a surprising good meal out this week! simple decor but great food and value. to start with had bruschetta with pea and mint. starters was a moroccan green bean & seared tuna salad w/ preserved lemon, olives & harrisa and a colleague had chicory & pear salad w/ toasted pecan nuts & gorgonzola. for mains had chinese 5 spice sticky hoisin porkbellyw/ sweet potato puree, chinese cabbage & pok choi. dessert was a delicious almond tart with creme fraiche.  service just a bit slow :(

wow, just wow. the space is designed in an unpretentious but stylish way, comfortable, too. service was impeccable - from the person greeting us at the door to the young lady serving us. we did not ever have to look for her, and she also wasn't in our face the entire night. now for the food - simply sublime. of course, i can't speak for how it will be every time (the menu changes twice a day), but maaan, did we get lucky! for starters, we shared lamb liver wrapped in bacon set on a bed of rocket with mustard spreads - so delicious. my partner had the rabbit papardelle, which he enjoyed (except he did say they skimped a little on the meat). my order was the chinese 5 spice roast porkbellywith asian greens - i actually had to sit back after my first bite because i could already foresee being sad when it would be over. it was so simple, but so so good. really, one of the best meals i have ever had. to accompany this, we shared the black pearl cab sav/shiraz blend, which went down really well. for dessert, we had the coconut sago pudding and the almond torte. we both thoroughly enjoyed them! the flavours and recipes weren't particularly creative or amazing in their presentation, but the food, just the actual food, its textures, flavours, colours - pure music.

this restaurant seems to aaaalways be busy and apparently our last minute booking for 8 guests was not too much to ask! the manager graciously made some space for us and i’m so glad he did. of the 8, two of us decided to get two starters and a main so as to try as much as possible. the food is really really tasty, once again the porkbellybeing a stand out, the calamari was delicious too. really thorough, friendly and super attentive service.

we had the spider steak and pork belly. the steak was okay, but the porkbellywas phenomenal! we liked the vibe as we walked in to the bar/ lower dining area. it lost some of its charm as we walked up the stairs to our table. service was good and food was good. i think we'd try it again for the porkbellyif nothing else.

i was very grateful to get a last minute booking here on friday night, given how notoriously hard it is to get a table without one. there's been a lot of hype about the black sheep and i've heard countless good things from people i know who have gone. our booking was at 20:30, a bit late, but it was a friday so why not? i ordered the rainbow trout gravadlax to start and my partner had the pork loin with capers. my trout was very fresh and the small mustard sauce on the side was a lovely combination of flavours, but my partner's pork loin definitely took the cake with its creamy sauce and capers. for mains, i had the porkbellywith crackling while my partner had the seared rainbow trout. we ordered onion rings and chips as sides. the porkbellywas unlike any porkbellyi've every tasted. it was like butter that melted in my mouth. the crackling, however, had that flavour and texture that made you wonder if it hadn't been cooled and or kept hot in the oven as it was quite dry. sadly, my partner's salmon did not live up to the same hype. seared it was not, and i'm afraid it seemed to have been left a little too long in the pan. despite that, he did enjoy it, but sadly was not quite what he was expecting as it was entirely cooked through. their wine list has a good selection but the markup seems a bit extreme. all in all, i'd go back for their porkbellyand pork loin starter, but perhaps i'd take my own wine or not order a bottle.

i'm not sure what all the fuss is all about. it's good, it's popular, it's expensive and unexceptional.
cauliflower soup. over creamed otherwise ordinary. best thing to say about it? you can make it at home.
porkbelly was excellent. a rather small portion.
flour less chocolate cake... no it was poor.

so i'm not taken in be the hype. it's okay. better joints abound

i've been wanting to visit black sheep for ages and finally got there last week. the vibe is super trendy and i made sure to book in advance to get a table. our waiter was great and very informative on the menu. the food was good, but i was slightly disappointed after having such high expectations. i had the leek and potato soup to start and the porkbellyfor main. both were nice, but the porkbellywas very rich. my boyfriend had the goats cheese tart and the quail which he enjoyed too. we finished off with the white chocolate mousse which was super yummy! definitely recommend black sheep for a nice dinner out with friends, just be sure to book!

we celebrated my sister's birthday at the black sheep in kloof street. we arrived there earlier than our booking in order to have drinks before dinner and sat upstairs in a lounge area (which had a tv showing the cricket to some people's delight). the restaurant was very full (you have to book) but it never felt too busy and there was a good, friendly atmosphere.

our waiter (i didn't catch his name unfortunately) was very friendly and attentive in serving our rather large table.

the menu (written on a blackboard in the restaurant) has a wide variety of options - as a result of which deciding between menu items took a while as they all looked so tempting.

i ordered the porkbellyas a main with sweet potato puree. the pork was absolutely delicious and the portion size was very generous. others really enjoyed the trout, hake and the quail.

the mains range between r110 and r165 so, for me at least, it is on the more expensive side of the restaurants i have been to but it was completely worth it!

the only reason i'm not giving 5 stars is that gratuity (because of our table size) of 12% was added which i felt was a bit steep.

overall, a really delicious meal and awesome evening. i'll definitely go back!

being in cape town for a few days i wanted to try a few different restuarants and what a find the black sheep is. it was busy and i was seated at the bar. i ordered the porkbellywhich was fantastic especially the crackling all washed down with a draught beer. then the piece de resistance, the chocolate brownies, if i had known they were this good i would have just had 2 portions of them.
i will definitely be back as soon as i can

i really enjoy seeing menu's that are creative, seasonal and unexpected - at the black sheep you are guaranteed to have to read the menu a few times to decide which meal to order! there are too many drool-worthy options... i chose the porkbelly- fragrant, melt in the mouth and earned the food envy of others at the table! i was with a vegetarian who loved the fact that there were multiple interesting veg options on the menu.
