she was a big fan of the old location in the river market -- but the few times i went there a couple of years ago, i really didn’t like it. the place struck me as thrift shoppy, and it seems like my sandwiches were always 98% crusty bread, 2% fillings. ho

succotash is a restaurant whose overall concept i regard highly. it's that funky, artsy type of place that feels like it cares much more about being unique and a good fit for the community than being a cash cow for its owners.

in a world of mundane breakfast, succotash stands as an exception. breakfast might be the most difficult meal to draw the masses in with, largely due to the difficulty of differentiating one's menu enough from the competitors' to justify travel time above and beyond that of going to the nearest local eatery. and that is what makes succotash so special. their menu is what i would consider 1/2 classic and 1/2 unique (and not the type of unique you would associate with abstract art that completely escapes you, but rather the type that hits you every time you see a new invention that's so obvious, you're mad for the next week that you didn't think of it sooner). portions are large, the food is prepared with an obvious passion, and for some strange reason service has improved since the recent move to 2601 holmes. so, if you find yourself feeling a little frisky in the morning (for food that is), and willing to go the distance, try succotash and have yourself a "cake" & a smile (which is actually on the menu).

had a chance today to dine at the new location near hospital hill. the food and experience continue to be exceptional, and the space, in my opinion, is a better fit for them.

if your grama was a gourmet chef this would be like eating at grama's!. first, i tried several times and could not handle the wait at the old location so this was my first experience and it's at the new restaurant. very homey eclectic diner. the fried potatoes are fried, damnit-and they are fried dark brown like they should be not johnson county beige!! but, this is not just diner food-it is more. a blt with eggs and cheese and arugula and pesto mayo-and not just any pesto mayo, this was more fresh pesto than mayo. seriously one of the best sandwiches i've had in a long time-in fact-now i'm craving another one! i had a chocolate mint brownie also that i took with me and ate later-also outstanding. i can't wait to go back with my husband and i promise it won't be long. the only draw back is that they are busy and don't rush you so the wait may take awhile and the wait staff isn't a corporate trained staff so they are a little rough around the edges but they seem to all mean well and care about their clientele-they're nice people dog gone it. i'd say this is sort of like if woodswether cafe was married to happy gillis cafe-succotash would be their child.

you never want to go to a restaurant four days before it closes. but that was the situation i found myself in several days ago, when i suggested to a friend that we go to succotash in river market. as we walked in, there were boxes everywhere and the casu

my fiancée and i went here on a busy saturday mid-morning. it was packed, so i'll give them the benefit of the doubt, but the service was absolutely terrible and the food was average. we waited twenty minutes for our waiter and some water. by then we had our food picked out. the menu looked really appetizing, with lots of wraps, quiches, and traditonal meals. he grabbed us a juice bar menu as well, which looked just as good. it took him ten minutes to bring me my drink, but the other didn't show up until the food arrived, fifteen minutes after that. unfortunately, it was the wrong drink. when i bit into my smoked salmon and spinach wrap, i realized they made it without the smoked salmon. on top of it all, we were there over an hour and our waters were never refilled. like i said, they were slammed with customers, so they'll get a second chance, but at the moment, i'm pretty dissapointed.

this place gets a lot of kudos from my friends, random strangers and the kc press. i'm happy to report that it is not entirely unwarranted. most people i think, go to succotash for weekend breakfast or brunch. indeed they offer brun
