awesome beer, better food. the only thing better than the beer atsquattersis the food. the mac & cheese and tacos are both amazing (vegetarian) options for those who can't usually partake in bar food. yum!

family and out of town guest met for dinner atsquattersdowntown. i had good memories of their food and especially their fish from a prior visit about a year ago. we ordered wings and calamari appetizers, buffalo burger, no frills cheese burger, ahi tacos, cod tacos, a chicken salad and beers. the appetizers and beer were good. the buffalo burger could be taken directly from the buns and used as a hockey puck. the salad did not have especially fresh ingredients. the tacos were not well prepared and the fished tasted off. to my great discredit i choked down a ahi and cod taco and so did my son - we were sharing two tacos across plates. i left the restaurant with a taste in my mouth that worsened for hours despite efforts to remove it with brushing, mouth washing etc. around midnight i dashed to the bathroom for a thunder butt purge that left me feeling better. my son made it to the morning before he evacuated the fish. and all this for $120 + tip. not a happy customer.

i parked in the public parking next door and go out of my mini van.  i was feeling pretty tough i know.  i wanted to see if this was the type of place i could bring my kids in and get some food.  sure enough after walking in the door, i immediately saw 3-4 tables with small children.  the place looked pretty cool, and i had heard a lot of good things about the food.  it was time to trysquattersfor the first time.

i had an awful experience at this place. after telling the hostess that my party would be between 4 and 5 people, some of whom didn't plan to eat, the waitress still harassed us when my friends arrived with an extra person first the problem was that they have a rule (in slc- no, surely not a rule?!) against pulling two chairs up to a four top. when i offered to move to a table to accommodate our party of six, the waitress said we'd need to cash out and start a new tab. i said fine. then she said they didn't want a whole table of people who "aren't ordering anything.". with overly filling under 4% beer on tap for $5 and good beer in bottles for $8 to $18 (i was drinking the latter i might add), i wouldn't think we qualified as not ordering anything. halnour party went to the bar where tr bartender was rude to them. i thought about stuffing the waitress, which i never do. instead, i'm here to say thatsquattersdowntown lacks the basic courtesy of a normal pub, but should i expect more in slc?

pumped up pub. the iconic pub. as far as i'm concerned, the quality of the pub dictates the quality of the city. downtown slc has a handful of good pubs, and my favorite has always been squatters. i have nothing bad to say about any of the pubs downtown, but the most consistent quality beer and food has been at squatters.

the food is just good. it's not the kind of food that i would scream to everyone that they have to try it, but it's definitely in the top quintile of food quality. i would never be worried bringing someone from out of town to this pub. the menu is broad, giving you options from classics like fish and chips or burgers, to clever pizzas, southwestern concoctions, and even a bit of asian fusion. over the years, i've tried a lot of them so feel safe saying that if you can't find a dish to eat here, then you just don't like food.

the trump card forsquattersis their beer. we have several great microbrewed beers in slc, andsquattersis definitely on the short list. my personal favorite is their viennese. for me, it's the perfectly balanced between light and dark, bitter and sweet, that i just want to fill a bathtub with and drink. i wish i could, but it's such a popular one, that often it will be sold out. not to worry though, because you have plenty of other options. other rave-able beers: the capt bastard oatmeal stout (thick and meaty, but not bitter), chasing tail (lighter and sweeter) and full suspension (unfiltered hoppiness...not for the faint of heart).

by far my favorite place to eat in the valley.squatterskeeps that middle class bar feel while running an amazing sit down restaurant, and if you believe beer is good for the soul then you should have been here years ago instead of just now looking at reviews. captain bastard is the best oatmeal stout/dark beer evar!!!!!!! im addicted...

excellent food- so much more than just pub food!!. for beer, a burger, or even something more off the beaten path, squattersis an excellent place to get a bite or just hang out at the bar and much on appetizers. the menu is diverse and anything and everything i have had from burgers to tacos has been great, especially compared to other "gastropubs" around downtown. you might have a problem getting a table on a weekend, but it's worth the wait...

alright, time for the first installment of the new beers i tried on the recent trip to las vegas for dustin's bachelor party. sorry, no bachelor party stories in this webspace... maybe check brent's facebook? our first stop (after spending the night in new orleans) was actually in the salt lake city airport, at a place calledsquatterspub . the brewery opened in 1989 and now they run 3 locations... the original in salt lake city, a location in park city, and a location in the airport. and for an airport pub the selection was really not bad. they had a wide range of the standard beers plus bottles of some of the specialties. first up was thesquattersorganic amber ale . it's a pretty typical looking amber ale served in an imperial pint glass. dark caramel color with a small white head, but on a bar pour you don't really want a large head, right? the aroma is malt dominant as it should be, but with a nice hint of hops. it has a good balance on the nose for sure. unfortunately the taste

go for the hummus and calamari plus local beers.. they have some great appetizers atsquatterslike the edamame hummus with flatbread, the mahumara, or the calamari. of course they are known for their local brews as well. try their beer sampler which comes out on a ski and allows you to try several different brews. their pizza is also good.
