good beer, boring food. we're always looking forgoodmicrobrews in whatever city we happen to be in, so we stopped in our way through salt lake. the beer was prettygood- nothing mind blowing, but satisfying just the same. the food was incredibly bland and had a pre-packaged flavor. maybe stick with bar food standbys here, ie, burgers.

family and out of town guest met for dinner at squatters downtown. i hadgoodmemories of their food and especially their fish from a prior visit about a year ago. we ordered wings and calamari appetizers, buffalo burger, no frills cheese burger, ahi tacos, cod tacos, a chicken salad and beers. the appetizers and beer were good. the buffalo burger could be taken directly from the buns and used as a hockey puck. the salad did not have especially fresh ingredients. the tacos were not well prepared and the fished tasted off. to my great discredit i choked down a ahi and cod taco and so did my son - we were sharing two tacos across plates. i left the restaurant with a taste in my mouth that worsened for hours despite efforts to remove it with brushing, mouth washing etc. around midnight i dashed to the bathroom for a thunder butt purge that left me feeling better. my son made it to the morning before he evacuated the fish. and all this for $120 + tip. not a happy customer.

i had the tomato soup and it was prettygoodbut not the best i've had. but the atmosphere was worth it all. not only are the walls 200 year old brick, but there are giant widows that look out on the city and mountains.

dog food - if you hate your dog. went there monday dec. 9th 2013. being from out of town i asked what was considered their best shot at agoodmeal. (when in rome, right??...) the hostess told me the burgers were great. uhmmm... the burger was worse than dog food. dry, dry, dry and disgusting. it was a pre-formed frozen patty - you could tell from the perfectly formed oval shape. grey in color, and tasteless. the bun was hard and stale. service was lame-o and slow as molasses. slc, you need to whip up on this place to get their act together. when it's this bad, i don't even consider a 2nd chance. avoid this dump. it is absolute pure garbage.

i parked in the public parking next door and go out of my mini van.  i was feeling pretty tough i know.  i wanted to see if this was the type of place i could bring my kids in and get some food.  sure enough after walking in the door, i immediately saw 3-4 tables with small children.  the place looked pretty cool, and i had heard a lot ofgoodthings about the food.  it was time to try squatters for the first time.

i had an awful experience at this place. after telling the hostess that my party would be between 4 and 5 people, some of whom didn't plan to eat, the waitress still harassed us when my friends arrived with an extra person first the problem was that they have a rule (in slc- no, surely not a rule?!) against pulling two chairs up to a four top. when i offered to move to a table to accommodate our party of six, the waitress said we'd need to cash out and start a new tab. i said fine. then she said they didn't want a whole table of people who "aren't ordering anything.". with overly filling under 4% beer on tap for $5 andgoodbeer in bottles for $8 to $18 (i was drinking the latter i might add), i wouldn't think we qualified as not ordering anything. halnour party went to the bar where tr bartender was rude to them. i thought about stuffing the waitress, which i never do. instead, i'm here to say that squatters downtown lacks the basic courtesy of a normal pub, but should i expect more in slc?

pumped up pub. the iconic pub. as far as i'm concerned, the quality of the pub dictates the quality of the city. downtown slc has a handful ofgoodpubs, and my favorite has always been squatters. i have nothing bad to say about any of the pubs downtown, but the most consistent quality beer and food has been at squatters.

the food is just good. it's not the kind of food that i would scream to everyone that they have to try it, but it's definitely in the top quintile of food quality. i would never be worried bringing someone from out of town to this pub. the menu is broad, giving you options from classics like fish and chips or burgers, to clever pizzas, southwestern concoctions, and even a bit of asian fusion. over the years, i've tried a lot of them so feel safe saying that if you can't find a dish to eat here, then you just don't like food.

the trump card for squatters is their beer. we have several great microbrewed beers in slc, and squatters is definitely on the short list. my personal favorite is their viennese. for me, it's the perfectly balanced between light and dark, bitter and sweet, that i just want to fill a bathtub with and drink. i wish i could, but it's such a popular one, that often it will be sold out. not to worry though, because you have plenty of other options. other rave-able beers: the capt bastard oatmeal stout (thick and meaty, but not bitter), chasing tail (lighter and sweeter) and full suspension (unfiltered hoppiness...not for the faint of heart).

hit the spot!. recommended by hilton staff and a block across from the hotel - wasn't expecting anything other than the usual pub fare and was happily surprised. not a big fan of greasy, heavy, fried stuff - prefer the meat and veggies option. squatters' ahi spring roll salad is a full entree with four large, thick, seared rare-ish slices of tuna encased in super-light, crisp, delectable wrappers served over a huge pile of spicy arugula, pickled ginger (thegoodstuff, not the scary pink kind), and pickled red cabbage. usually don't eat the dressing but this was irresistible - zingy and bright. draft full suspension pale ale was fantastic, service was pretty good. sat at the bar - very friendly, happy crowd. great find so close to the hotel - much better option than all the tired national chains nearby.

by far my favorite place to eat in the valley. squatters keeps that middle class bar feel while running an amazing sit down restaurant, and if you believe beer isgoodfor the soul then you should have been here years ago instead of just now looking at reviews. captain bastard is the best oatmeal stout/dark beer evar!!!!!!! im addicted...
