afternoon unwind

in the afternoon we stopped in to taste some local brew. the bartender, paul, was such a blessing to meet that day. after many selections to choose from we both decided on a mug. paul went above and beyond getting to know these south georgia gals. he suggested sites to visit and the next day we were off. with a rental car and his advice we had a fantastic tour of sundance, park city, bridal falls and provo canyon. what a blessing to have paul's expertise. thepubis great, beer excellent, and atmosphere fabulous.

wait. what? i thought this was about the best dishes in slc? while that’s true, when you get a beer as excellent as squatter’s nitro cream ale – its a dish in its own right. well, at least in my beer-loving universe. crafted at the downtown slc brewery itself by brewmaster jason stock, the brew is modeled on the english creamy bitter – boddingtons. smooth and creamy with just a hit of hoppy bitterness, its one of the best locally breweed ales. and my personal opinion, its even better than the bitter its based on. the only complaint is that squatter’s rotate their on draft nitro beers, and you might not always be able to snag this most excellent brew. squatter’spub147 w broadway, salt lake city, ut (801) 363-2739 the post squatter’s: nitro cream ale appeared first on best of slc .

good, not great. their burgers are okay, beer selection very good, but it's not the bestpubin the area. every time i go here i wish the crowd and the service were both friendlier. for a better night out, i'll always hit up red rock or poplar.
but it's not bad.

pumped up pub. the iconic pub. as far as i'm concerned, the quality of thepubdictates the quality of the city. downtown slc has a handful of good pubs, and my favorite has always been squatters. i have nothing bad to say about any of the pubs downtown, but the most consistent quality beer and food has been at squatters.

the food is just good. it's not the kind of food that i would scream to everyone that they have to try it, but it's definitely in the top quintile of food quality. i would never be worried bringing someone from out of town to this pub. the menu is broad, giving you options from classics like fish and chips or burgers, to clever pizzas, southwestern concoctions, and even a bit of asian fusion. over the years, i've tried a lot of them so feel safe saying that if you can't find a dish to eat here, then you just don't like food.

the trump card for squatters is their beer. we have several great microbrewed beers in slc, and squatters is definitely on the short list. my personal favorite is their viennese. for me, it's the perfectly balanced between light and dark, bitter and sweet, that i just want to fill a bathtub with and drink. i wish i could, but it's such a popular one, that often it will be sold out. not to worry though, because you have plenty of other options. other rave-able beers: the capt bastard oatmeal stout (thick and meaty, but not bitter), chasing tail (lighter and sweeter) and full suspension (unfiltered hoppiness...not for the faint of heart).

hit the spot!. recommended by hilton staff and a block across from the hotel - wasn't expecting anything other than the usualpubfare and was happily surprised. not a big fan of greasy, heavy, fried stuff - prefer the meat and veggies option. squatters' ahi spring roll salad is a full entree with four large, thick, seared rare-ish slices of tuna encased in super-light, crisp, delectable wrappers served over a huge pile of spicy arugula, pickled ginger (the good stuff, not the scary pink kind), and pickled red cabbage. usually don't eat the dressing but this was irresistible - zingy and bright. draft full suspension pale ale was fantastic, service was pretty good. sat at the bar - very friendly, happy crowd. great find so close to the hotel - much better option than all the tired national chains nearby.

excellent food- so much more than justpubfood!!. for beer, a burger, or even something more off the beaten path, squatters is an excellent place to get a bite or just hang out at the bar and much on appetizers. the menu is diverse and anything and everything i have had from burgers to tacos has been great, especially compared to other "gastropubs" around downtown. you might have a problem getting a table on a weekend, but it's worth the wait...

wonderful place for dinner.. we visited this place, three of us while in town for the wasatch front 100 endurance run. i am not a beer drinker, but the other two in my party were, and very much liked the beer they chose. i had the roadhouse nachos, which was nice and generously portioned. my entree was the roasted veggie sandwich, which was a bit soggy, but delicious. i'd recommend they put something to act as a barrier between the roasted veggies and the bread, such as some cheese or lettuce.

best of all, the atmosphere was nice, the service was really fast. we sat outside, where the chairs are tiny and kind of weird and uncomfortable. it was nice outside, but probably i'll sit inside next time. it's a bit on the pricier side forpubfood, but i expected that because of the downtown location. i'd definitely go there again.

alright, time for the first installment of the new beers i tried on the recent trip to las vegas for dustin's bachelor party. sorry, no bachelor party stories in this webspace... maybe check brent's facebook? our first stop (after spending the night in new orleans) was actually in the salt lake city airport, at a place called squatterspub. the brewery opened in 1989 and now they run 3 locations... the original in salt lake city, a location in park city, and a location in the airport. and for an airportpubthe selection was really not bad. they had a wide range of the standard beers plus bottles of some of the specialties. first up was the squatters organic amber ale . it's a pretty typical looking amber ale served in an imperial pint glass. dark caramel color with a small white head, but on a bar pour you don't really want a large head, right? the aroma is malt dominant as it should be, but with a nice hint of hops. it has a good balance on the nose for sure. unfortunately the taste

squatters needs to hire service and a brewmaster that will compliment thier marketing. the stout was the most drinkable offering there, and i found it rather mediocre. but there is a drinker for any beer, so if you've had them before, you'll know what you're getting. i'll pass on it however. as far as food, we had the calamari, wings, a rueben and the bourbon burger. my friend did not finish his burger, and he will gladys chow a whopper any day of the week. my rueben was served on what appeared to be cold soggy toast. the rueben from arby's is better than this, it was that bad. the wings were marinated in a red dye brine of rock salt and served with a tub of blue cheese flavored sauce. at least the celery and carrots were ok. the disaster that was the calamari is too horrific to discuss. to sum it up, if you want to burn fifty bucks and get a buzz on designer swill and generic to badpubfood, go here. the service was better than i'd hoped, and the atmosphere was fun and upbeat. i had a good time, so overall, 2-1/2 stars out of 5.
