an uncle from the us visits and is keen to try hidden local food gems. this just happens to coincide with your cravings for the best cheesecake sydney has to offer. but the store has been closed till today, and he's flying back to the us tonight and you're busy during the day. so what do you do?

you spend the week leading up to today hyping the cheesecake, even visiting the shop with him while it's closed for the new year holidays, so that, subconsciously, he's been primed to visit today.

all goes according to plan. while you're out with your brother and his friend, your uncle sends you a text saying, "sos: help needed to share 2 pieces of ny style c-cake". you say thank you and have a good flight and give a silent cheer. later on, you're joined by another couple and you all have kbbq. you kind of sit on the side, preoccupying yourself with cooking and service rather than conversation.
a trip to oliver brown later and you're at home.

you pull the cake out of the fridge, placeit on a little saucer, and go to town on that fluffy, zesty cheesecake. it's more delicious than you remembered. so delicious that you feel compelled to leave a 5-star review for lorraine's patisserie midway.

once you're done, you return to what you were doing before - eating the cake, listening to "shake it out" by florence + the machine, and reflecting on how often you are the third (or 5th) wheel. but you don't cry because you're not sad.
you just keep eating that delicious cake.

the mascarpone cake tasted amazing! such a delight to try. love the caramelised top and the balance that the fresh strawberries provide. definitely wish to go again and try another sweet treat sometime soon. thisplacewould be a 5/5 if seating were available but i guess we can’t have everything.

the desserts here are gorgeous. it’s such a quaint littleplaceand i had such a hard time picking! ended up trying the frangipane tart - and promptly went back for the new york cheesecake, and brought ruby’s cake home. the frangipane tart is well balanced - not too sweet, and would be a perfect any occasion treat. the new york cheesecake has a more interesting flavour - the lemon is prominent and it’s much lighter than other denser versions i’ve tried at cafes. it’s a cake that would need to be enjoyed depending on one’s mood on the day. the ruby’s cake was nice but perhaps the least favourite - the flavours meshed well however. keep in mind that there is no seating however. will definitely be returning to try the other offerings!

my absolute favourite dessertplaceand the reason for my numerous trips back up to sydney, lorraines serves up delicious, authentic french desserts.

their cheesecake($10) is simply amazing - its light and almost mousse-like with a subtle tartness from the lemon which balances out any richness. the crust is also on point, perfectly crunchy but not brittle or hard. i could eat this every day and never get sick of it. the toffee vanilla choux puff($4) was also perfect - the toffee adding crunch and sweetness, vanilla cream perfectly thick and creamy and of course the choux was light and airy. i loved the way the flavours harmonised together. i loved the  strawberry mascarpone cake($10) which completely blew me away on the first bite - fluffiness and crunch from the meringue, nuttiness from the coconut while the tart strawberries worked so well with the rich mascarpone. i did find it a bit too rich towards the end because of the coconut and cream however it may have been due to the sheer amount of cake i had. my friend also enjoyed their raspberry choux($7.50) but make sure you eat them fresh for the best experience!!! overall an out-of-this-world sweets experience and well worth the price.

unfortunately the store is very small and they don't have any seating available but i'm more than happy to take as many trips as are necessary to try all of lorraine's offerings! my only wish for thisplaceis that hopefully the guy who is serving will be more careful when getting the cakes as he almost just tosses them into the box and it happened on both occasions i visited t_t

absolutely gorgeous cheesecake... melting in a mouth texture.... the hint of tangy lemony tartness that perfectly marries this fluffy creamy sweetness of the cake... ah well... all i would say is that it's a match made in heaven..... it's a small patisserie with noplaceto sit... but that cheesecake... i will go back for it any day even if it means that i need to sit on the street to eat it...

i had the mascarpone strawberry cake slice. some of the price tags will shock you at first but work with me here because this is one of those delicately created, moan out loud kind of dessert bake places that are rare in the city and this could very well be the only answer in sydney to the legendary watermelon cake from anotherplacewho we will not name! it's got its on thing going on and i just love the velvety texture and chopped strawberry in this – luscious!

good cheesecake but it's basically a industrial kitchen with a counter so if you are looking for aplaceto sit down or customer service this is not theplaceto go.

visited here after seeing the reviews on zomato. reached around 5 in the evening they didn't have much left tried the raspberry tart and the ruby cake. the tart was good the biscuit base a bit hard after refrigerating it. the ruby cake was lovely it was light and creamy. it's a caramel dessert but overly sweet thankfully.

need to go back and try the mascarpone cake that thisplaceis so famous for.

i saw thisplaceon the must try dessert collections. i am surprised i haven't been here as located in the areas i visit. a small patisserie located near the ivy, it had display cabinets full of beautiful looking pastries and cakes. you can even see the workers hard at work in the kitchen behind the cashier. they definitely taste as good as they look. priced on the highish side they are definitely worth the price! the cakes i bought were macadamia salted caramel chocolate tart, toffee vanilla choux puff, and an eclair (it wasn't on their normal menu but tasted like passionfruit). they taste amazing and can see why they get rave reviews.

first visit last week, it was 38 degrees so had to skip the famous mascarpone cake & buy only what would survive the heat.

- rhubarb pie: the best of the lot, good pastry, tart fruit filling (could've been more of it though), crunchy sugar top

- mini raspberry cake: cute looking, round & pink decorated with rose petals, but tasted very ordinary

- franjipane tart: well made though very sweet (think i prefer the almond slice from becasse)

- pork & fennel sausage roll: better than the average sausage roll but nowhere near bourke st bakery's version

- beef pies: big & substantial, good pastry, tasty though uneven filling (mostly gravy & 1 huge bit of meat) & too much gristle, overall i've had much better

plus: the person serving was pleasant with none of the posh cake shop attitude & took a lot of care boxing & wrapping everything

minus: 6 items were nearly $50 & if i loved them that'd be worth the occasional splurge. however the only one i'd maybe get again would be the rhubarb pie, if i could get over the idea of $9.50 for a smallish fruit pie... bakery prices are crazy in this town.

so this time, nothing really nailed it. i might give thisplaceanother chance one day & try some of the softer creamier cakes.

that strawberry and mascarpone cake. oh em gee. i'll admit that everything i've had at thisplaceis amazing but there's really no need to go beyond the strawberry and mascarpone. game over. seriously the best cake. i have yet to try the infamous date tart but that's coz they rarely bake it and when they do, there's a darn 3 hour queue! no doubt i'll never get to try that one. but no problemo. i'm more than happy with the strawberry and mascarpone!!!

hidden away from the hustle and bustle of george street is a little patisserie named after its owner, lorraine. lorraine godsmark used to work as head pastry chef alongside neil perry for 10 years and with that experience, she then opened two other cafes in the years to come until she joined the merivale group, where she is now head pastry chef of palings kitchen & bar and lorraine's patisserie. theplaceis not huge but functional and not one where you order, sit down and wait to be served. it is all to-go here, which we do not mind, really. who would when the pastry here is absolutely delectable? the rosebud marshmallow ($2.50) intrigued us, as it was the first time we saw gluten-free marshmallow. we bought a bag of these rosewater and raspberry marshmallow with raspberry jelly dipped in dark chocolate. we found it just average perhaps more due to the fact that our tastebuds are not used to gluten-free food than it being not tasty. on a personal note, i

theplaceitself is quite small with about a 2 metre by 1 metre area for customers to stand in. mds and i found it quite cramped with all our winter baggage, maneuvering around eachother’s bags, umbrellas and coats to try to have a peek into the pastry cabinets and check out what was on the trays.
