there may be cakes out there which claim to be ‘light’, but this is it, this is light. the sponge in between is fluffy, the mascarpone cream cheese in between the cake is so airy and light. together, sandwiching the sweet and sour strawberries make this such a refreshing treat! in addition, the crunchy caramel on the top layer along with the icing sugar just tops this all off and make this one of the best cheesecakes i’ve ever had (note: i am very partial to light desserts). i will definitely revisit when i

in the cbd area and craving for refreshing cakes, but black star pastry's strawberry watermelon cake is too far? look no further, lorraine's patisserie has the perfect competitor for the infamous watermelon cake: the strawberry mascarpone cake. despite it's hidden location in palings lane, this patisserie definitely serves fine pastries. baked freshly in the shop, you will be coming back for more! ----- strawberry mascarpone cake - mascarpone layered with crisp coconut dacquoise and sliced strawberries (aud 8.00/slice) *they also sell it whole, for more info click here * this is best served chill out of their display fridge. in my opinion, this cake was flawless. it has a great texture from the creamy, slightly sweet mascarpone, with the refreshing strawberries and the crisp, slightly chewy coconut dacquise. none of the element overpowers the other and therefore, you can taste everything from the coconut, strawberries and the mascarpone cream. oh, and don't forget the brulee-d top. my

hidden away from the hustle and bustle of george street is a little patisserie named after its owner, lorraine. lorraine godsmark used to work as head pastry chef alongside neil perry for 10 years and with that experience, she then opened two other cafes in the years to come until she joined the merivale group, where she is now head pastry chef of palings kitchen & bar and lorraine's patisserie. the place is not huge but functional and not one where you order, sit down and wait to be served. it is all to-go here, which we do not mind, really. who would when the pastry here is absolutely delectable? the rosebud marshmallow ($2.50) intrigued us, as it was the first time we saw gluten-free marshmallow. we bought a bag of these rosewater and raspberry marshmallow with raspberry jelly dipped in dark chocolate. we found it just average perhaps more due to the fact that our tastebuds are not used to gluten-free food than it being not tasty. on a personal note, i

...the peach melba was my favourite - somewhat surprisingly as the cassata was nice and chocolaty.

worth the effort. found the shop which is hidden away in a lane and it was worth the effort. bought some cakes to take home to the family who were impressed with the all especially the strawberry mascarpone. very small venue but the staff member who served me was pleasant and efficient. definitely somewhere to return to.

the place itself is quite small with about a 2 metre by 1 metre area for customers to stand in. mds and i found it quite cramped with all our winter baggage, maneuvering around eachother’s bags, umbrellas and coats to try to have a peek into the pastry cabinets and check out what was on the trays.

lorraine’s patisserie is in a magical laneway off bustling george street. look up and you’ll see forgotten songs, a whimsical installation of bird cages. from there, follow your nose to baking smells wafting from palings lane.

goddess of baked goods. a million blessings on justin hemmes for luring lorraine back to the cbd. this place is a working bakery with a tiny counter and standing area (can only fit 2-3 people and only 1 if you have shopping bags) so people are there to buy not sit and eat. more often than not they've come specifically here - it's not a place you just happen to be walking by as an everyday shopper. i always lay my credit card down for the strawberry mascarpone cake but there are plenty of other treats that are supreme - particularly the chocolate macadamia tart, the raspberry and pecan cake and the macaroon (the coconut kind not the so mainstream it's boring macaron). walked in one sunday when it's closed and lorraine was working away - that's dedication there and it shows in the results.

this is a category leader.

walked past this sensational 'baked' smell on george street and followed my nose. holy mackerel, this place is to die for. one of everything thanks! cute addition to a very melbourne looking lane way. will have to check out what merjvale has to offer as the ash street restaurant hub has a lot of buzz, unique for what seems to be missing in sydney.

the queens birthday long weekend saw us jet setting over to good ol’ sydney for a mini gastronomical foodie crawl around the cbd. ahhhh, it was so good to be back! the fast paced moving lifestyle, tall buildings and people navigating their way around the city with a purpose gave me flashbacks of my time in nyc . i can definitely see why sydney siders always compare the two. we were there for a handful of days and our itinerary was filled with foodie spots and a touch of shopping; i’m still recovering from my usa trip! >. the red eye flight allowed us to avoid the early morning peak hour crowd whilst we pondered around the city. comfortable shoes were a must! i thought my comfy looking flats would be sufficient but i underestimated them and as a result, a quick pit stop was made at the closest convenient store so i could pad my feet up in bandaids! heh! ham and cheese croissant; $5.00 we pondered around the ivy and after turning down an alleyway, we came upon a small corner patisserie:
