lorraine's patisserie

an uncle from the us visits and is keen to try hidden local food gems. this just happens to coincide with your cravings for the best cheesecake sydney has to offer. but the store has been closed till today, and he's flying back to the us tonight and you're busy during the day. so what do you do?

you spend the week leading up to today hyping the cheesecake, even visiting the shop with him while it's closed for the new year holidays, so that, subconsciously, he's been primed to visit today.

all goes according to plan. while you're out with your brother and his friend, your uncle sends you a text saying, "sos: help needed to share 2 pieces of ny style c-cake". you say thank you and have a good flight and give a silent cheer. later on, you're joined by another couple and you all have kbbq. you kind of sit on the side, preoccupying yourself with cooking and service rather than conversation.
a trip to oliver brown later and you're at home.

you pull the cake out of the fridge, place it on a little saucer, and go to town on that fluffy, zesty cheesecake. it's more delicious than you remembered. so delicious that you feel compelled to leave a 5-star review for lorraine's patisserie midway. 

once you're done, you return to what you were doing before - eating the cake, listening to "shake it out" by florence + the machine, and reflecting on how often you are the third (or 5th) wheel. but you don't cry because you're not sad.
you just keep eating that delicious cake.

i can never go wrong with lorraine's. you can literally smell the freshly basked tarts, cakes and goods when walking own george street, finding the little open kitchen hidden in palings lane. 

everytime i go i must get the following two; their new york cheesecake and the paris brest. their cheesecake is honestly so light and fluffy, it literally melts in your mouth. it's not too sweet, where there's hints of lemon and ginger from the cookie base. whereas, the paris brest is made from their amazing choux pastry filled with the most amazing hazelnut cream. you honestly need to try it for yourself!

their most popular mascarpone cake tasted amazing! the lightened mascarpone cheese layered with crisp coconut along with strawberries, this combination is a magic. but still, only take away...

love this little patisserie. the hit is of course their strawberry lychee cake but i also love the chocolate cloud cake, kalamansi & rhubarb pie. i have heard a lot about their ny cheesecake so tried it on my latest visit. it was the lightest and fluffiest ny cheesecake i have had with a very distinct lemon flavour and ginger crumbed base. it was enjoyable but not a traditional ny cheesecake. service is efficient & robotic.

beautiful cakes by lorraines patisserie! number 1 go to place for getting a slice (or whole cake) for someone special. the flavours are just amazing. you'll know once you try for yourself!

the mascarpone cake was sold out so i chose the rubys cake. at first, i didn’t give that a high expectation because i don’t like any orange flavored chocolate. but this is the best one i’ve ever tried! it looks ordinary but it’s amazing! i will definitely try it again!!

the desert here are gorgeous. the best new york cheesecake we have ever had. this shop is super charming. mascarpone cake is to die for. i will definitely come back to this place

forget black star. lorraine’s is in my opinion, much better. do yourself a favour, make your way to this little patisserie in the cbd and order the mascarpone cake. best cake i’ve had this year. used to always make sure black star would be on my itinerary every single sydney trip, but now i’ll come to lorraine’s instead. the only pity is that it is takeaway only, but we got around that by walking to the botanical gardens and indulging there.

cheesecake - 8/10
strawberry mascarpone - 4/10 (the strawberries are terrible during the winter which is disappointing considering one slice is $10)
service and general demanour of employees - 2/10

first of all, this shop is super charming.
second of all, the mascarpone cake is to die for.
third of all, i just want to come back and eat some more.

the mascarpone cake tasted amazing! such a delight to try. love the caramelised top and the balance that the fresh strawberries provide. definitely wish to go again and try another sweet treat sometime soon. this place would be a 5/5 if seating were available but i guess we can’t have everything.

the desserts here are gorgeous. it’s such a quaint little place and i had such a hard time picking! ended up trying the frangipane tart - and promptly went back for the new york cheesecake, and brought ruby’s cake home. the frangipane tart is well balanced - not too sweet, and would be a perfect any occasion treat. the new york cheesecake has a more interesting flavour - the lemon is prominent and it’s much lighter than other denser versions i’ve tried at cafes. it’s a cake that would need to be enjoyed depending on one’s mood on the day. the ruby’s cake was nice but perhaps the least favourite - the flavours meshed well however. keep in mind that there is no seating however. will definitely be returning to try the other offerings!

had their cheesecake, very light and not too heavy! not a strong flavor but a nice and creamy creation! i love how it’s not too sweet so you don’t feel like stuffed at the end of it

this little patisserie tucked away underneath the ivy is our go to dessert and bakery.

the recommendations so far is the ny cheese cake, the strawberry muffin, and the chocolate croissant.
we usually get there in the morning as they are baking and wait for the first batch to come up so it’s freshly out of the oven!

so many naughty deliciousness in one place! i tried cheesecake before and it was the most light cheesecake i have ever tasted! this time i got famous mascarpone cake and it didn’t disappoint! i can’t wait to try other goodies in here! i love how they do and bake it in front of you. it’s a must try!
