long face at long chim. with the promise of authentic thai food, l happily booked a table for lunch for 2 at lc, eager to be transported back to the kingdom's taste sensations from a too-long ago holiday. i'm sad to say that it was hit & miss, with only one standout dish from four l tried - and seemingly unjustifiably high prices.
my lunch companion sensibly steered me away from the maa long chim (come try/sample) menu which is apparently massive and way too much for the two of us. taking into account her dietary limitations, we settled on the fish cakes, beef salad, pad thai and banana roti.
best first - the beef was fantastic - but it's not a salad in the traditional sense. a small handful of green leaves, six snake bean batons and some raw cabbage leaf decoration is what you'll get in the way of ingredients & garnish. the dressing is utterly delicious - but it's a steep $30 dish. next, the fish cakes. more vegies in this one but the cakes weren't as flavoursome as i'd hoped - and $24. the dessert roti was pretty good ($16) but for the base being burned - sure it's meant to be street food but charred pastry is inedible. lastly and least - the pad thai. this is my all time favourite thai dish but the lc version was boring - even with the help of the associated condiments provided - and $34. frankly, most thai takeaway places do a much better version for less than half that price. sad indeed considering all the amazing jars of pickles and ingredients displayed so attractively. with two glasses of champagne, lunch came to $155. i'm happy to spend that kind of money for lunch but lc isn't worth it.
our waiter was informed and friendly but a bit hard to find when we wanted to pay the bill. it gave me a chance to look more closely at the decor - to me the most authentic thing about lc. i'd wanted to try david thompson's vaunted street food venue for ages but lc didn't live up to expectations or hype. maybe the focus on the melbourne version has let the perth one drop off. maybe it's not the same when he's not around. i'm not going back to find out.
