recently went to this busy restaurant on a saturday night.
the good
easy online booking, friendly attentive staff throughout. the flavours were generally very good, without the need to drown it in coconut milk/cream.  portion sizes ok across the menu, with plenty of rice for all the dishes,
the bad
the orange curry fish & red curry roast duck were swimming in sauce with very little fish or duck pieces. pity,  as the flavours were fine. good thing we had plenty of rice to mop up!
this place is in its early days and there is need for improvement, so we will give another go soon.

back again
this time for a sunday lunch. online booking 3 days prior. the ambiance, and the friendly and attentive service, was very good. there was a different menu selection from last time, but with many of the "old favourites" still available. because of our previous experience, we opted for mostly dishes without a curry sauce. the dtom yam of snapper was very good, & very spicy as expected. the pad thai sadly had been burnt, something that shouldn't happen in a thai staple restaurant dish. other dishes were ok, but not "to die for". desserts are certainly worth a try. i'll give it awhile before trying again

michelin starred david thomson – whose bangkok restaurant nahm has featured in the world’s top 50 list – marked his long awaited return to australia with the opening of street food inspired long chim in perth in december 2015. perth? yes, perhaps he is trying to help them get over the death of the mining boom, though plans for a sydney arm are apparently underway (hopefully this is what he was working on that night, as he was frequently checking his laptop in between walking around the restaurant and the kitchen).

waited a month to finally come to dine at long chim. all because of the fame of david thompson so i was so excited to try it out with friends. we had ordered quite a lot of dishes like cured pork sausage, dried prawns ginger coconut, green papaya salad, green curry, red curry, sundried kingfish, tom yum soup, banana roti, palm sugar pudding and finally, durian ice cream. the sausage was really way too salty, tomyum was ok but too much dried chilli in there and slightly salty as well, green papaya salad- what a let down. it's supposed to be kind of crunchy mouthfeel but it was too watery and the papaya should be julienned a bit finer. green curry and red curry tasted just like the package you could get in an asian grocery store and cook at home yourself, nothing shine through. the sundried kingfish didn't taste like thai but just so chinese. the only good things were those desserts especially the durian ice cream, it tasted fantastic like the real king of the fruit. banana roti was lovely and as well as the pudding. they are really sweet but it did taste authentically thai. i reckon if you really want an authentic thai food, you really have to make a trip to thailand. asian foods prepared by a western even he's a celebrity chef will always never be the same as done by the local street food, in my opinion. in australia, they have compromised to suit the taste of western so it's never authentic. overall, we agree that we won't come back in again, perhaps if we do, it will only for the desserts😞

managed to get a table for 2 at short notice so was very excited to be able to try some long chim and how it measures up to the hype!

2 girls, ordered 3 mains & 2 desserts - pretty well done you would think - but portion sizes being on the smaller side probably helped. so for the price of the dishes, i would have expected a little bit bigger portions.

mains: red curry roast duck/hot and sour fish/green papaya salad
desserts: durian icecream with sesame wafer/banana roti

our favourite dish: red curry roast duck - absolutely tasty and duck was tender. not spicy though.

my friend liked the hot and sour snakehead fish & according to the waiter, it was very popular with girls. (not sure why it is so tho) fish was cooked well but still, not spicy.

the waiter had introduced us to long chim being authentic and traditional thai standards, even for their level of spiciness. so we were pretty cautious when there was a 'spicy' logo beside green papaya salad. we ordered the less spicy option. we regretted the choice as the salad was nice but not spicy at all & lacked the spicy kick. definitely going with the original spiciness next time.

everything was not spicy although we had read reviews with people saying things were pretty spicy! so if you are asian and have an average tolerance to spiciness (my friend had low tolerance), don't be afraid to go for the actual dish and do not ask for "less spicy" at all! i want a spicy kick in my thai food!

desserts-wise, we didn't like the durian icecream as it didn't taste like icecream! it didn't even taste cold strangely but more like a durian paste? the sesame wafer was awesome tho. i would have bought a tub of those sesame wafers if they were for sale. banana roti was pretty good and authentic i feel.

i would probably give it another chance and come back to try the other dishes too. and i still don't believe they didn't tailor the spiciness level to suit the australian crowd as its impossible to call these dishes spicy in thailand.

long chim is yet another great addition to the perth dining scene.

not only is this fabulous new restaurant and its gorgeous courtyard a great funky space in the basement of the new treasury building precinct but the food is devine.

we had some fresh cocktails and ate the duck fried rice and the duck curry, both delicious and bursting with flavour.

this place is a fusion of chinese, malaysian and thai food all rolled into one restaurant.

will be back to sample other items soon.

everything i had was nice but it still averaged to about a 7/10 and can be quite pricey. the sausages very nice and the durian ice cream worth eating . i liked the green and red curries but they were both only okay. i do prefer the red duck curry at nu nahm and southern star (langlely park). those last two are very creamy and rich with lychees and a different style to long chim. the green curry could be better. the papaya salad was a little watery but nice. seemed a little western friendly to me.  banana roti was good too.
by all means give it a try but it looks like i need to go to thailand sometime for the real deal. or possibly long chim in singapore.

we came here for dinner one sunday evening and the food was amazing! we had an hour and 45 minute slot but it was plenty of time to enjoy the food. the food came out quickly and the staff were friendly and efficient, never leaving your water glass empty. all the flavours were spot on, my only criticism would be the lack of meat in the curry dishes

one of the best special fried rice i've ever had (with crab meat) and the banana roti dessert was simply amazing

cannot wait to come back again!

thai for sunday lunch. papaya salad and fish cake to start. the salad was fresh and the fish cakes had a good hit of spice. for main we had green curry which was tasty but not much protein for the money. we also had duck fried rice which again was tasty but lacked value for money with a few pieces of duck. desert were good but works out at $3 per bite. while i would eat again i think the price point would put me off a regular visits instead going to low key chow house.

we were so excited to try this new restaurant on saturday night. first impressions were great. brilliant fit out and it had a great atmosphere. friendly staff. we started with the fish cakes , crunchy prawns and spicy pork with rice cakes. these were really enjoyable. flavours were nice and spicy however probably slightly overpriced for the servings. the night went downhill from there. for mains (between 6 of us) we ordered green chicken curry, red curry duck, beef massaman, green papaya salad, deep fried fish and pad thai. this sounds like a lot of food however the three males left hungry. the red duck curry had only three pieces of duck. two of which were mainly bone. at $35 this was unacceptable as some of us didn't even taste any duck. the beef curry had only four pieces of beef. two of the couples had to cut a tiny piece of beef each in half so that everyone got to try... $36. the rest of the dishes were quite small and not worthy of the cost due to portion size. we filled up on rice (thankfully this was free) and the sauce from the curries. this restaurant has so much potential however left us disappointed and hungry.

very disappointed overall. are they really authentic thai food? service was great. environment excellent.

fish cakes - price reasonable. taste still something missing and too wet. overall the best in our meal.

beef salad - taste average. more like a japanese salad.

papaya salad - don't have that kick there. papaya not cut fine enough.

deep fried king fish - most disappointed dish. where is the authentic thai sauce go with fish? every one can fried at home. what is this diah so special?

pad thai - no comment. every local thai take away can cook better.

we had dinner in the bar area on a friday night. the ambience is cool, it's not loud so you can actually have a normal conversation, the courtyard is pretty funky to look at and the best part, you don't have a seating time limit (otherwise you get 1.5hours if you were to go at 6pm in the restaurant which can feel pretty rushed so i was not keen).
the service was mostly good, sometimes with the crowds it was hard to wave down a waitress but that's understandable while they get used to working with the set up.

the food was pretty tasty definitely but for those prices, it's not worth it. $30 a dish gets you a few pieces of fish in the sour orange fish curry and a few pieces of duck and lots of rice in the fried rice with duck. the baked prawns and glass noodles was more reasonable. the banana roti was great though.

we cheekily rang on a thursday to see if we could score a table for the saturday night (as i was told you had to book months in advance) and of course they were booked out except for a 9.30pm table which is a bit late for us. i had also sent them an email and the response was the same but offered the advice if we came in between 5-7 we should be able to get a table in the bar or the courtyard. so my hubby and i arrived around 6pm and scored a table in the courtyard. simple setting but it was refreshing to be outside eating for a change and the walls keep it safe from the winds on st georges terrace.we ordered everything to share:entrée- prawn minced in lettuce cups (not the official name!) and fish cakes. both were delicious with a lot of bite and seeing i am only good with mild i requested a side plate of cucumber so i could keep eating it. side sauce for the fish cakes would have benefited the dish.main - duck red curry, lamb rib special and pad thai. we asked the waitress for recommendations and she explained the special to us and their unique pad thai so we went with that and weren't disappointed. the meat on the ribs melted in your mouth off the bone and the pad thai was very tasty. we enjoyed the duck but too many bones for my liking. and it doesn't compare to the duck red curry at ginger boy in melbourne. for the mains we were given a selection of sauces to choose from if we so desired. we ate most of it but left some of the pad thai as a good size helping. cocktails were well made and yummy. hubby nominated long chim the best thai restaurant in perth. i wouldn't disagree.
