pretty good most of the time, therestaurantmanager is a bit of a pretentious arse. the food is good though, mild for thai food, but tasty and worth the price.

thisrestauranthas amazing decor and vibe. it's pretty cool. we were warned about the spice of food and tried to choose mild dishes but unfortunately still needed to ask for a glass of milk! food is authentic and shouldn't be criticised but unfortunately it's just too hot for my taste buds.

*rating is a 4.5*
came for dinner for 4 on a saturday night. we were promptly seated by our friendly host and proceeded to order:
- vege spring rolls (standard),
- crunchy prawns (tasty)
- green papaya salad (delicious)
- siamese watercress (very tasty)
- massaman beef curry (very good)
- deep fried fish (good)
- charred noodles (delicious)
- for dessert we tried the banana roti which was surprisingly delicious, as was the mango and sticky rice.
overall the dishes were balanced, flavour packed, but generally very spicy (be warned!). therestaurantitself is very funky and has a distinctly ‘melbourne-like’ vibe which i love. service was very good. definitely worth a visit.

this is not arestaurantfor the faint hearted. owned by aussie thaiophile chef david thompson, it is a fun place to go – loud, brash and unashamedly like a street style cafe. the food is authentic in looks, flavour and spice – it is hot, you know, silom road hot, so if you can’t take spicy food, then maybe this is not the best choice for you.

3.5/5 a nice upper market asianrestaurantin the heart of perth. the spring rolls were homemade and the chicken wings had good flavour. the noodles were ok, the egg brought a bit of a smokey flavour which i thought detracted from the dish. the standout was the chinese broccoli - the sauce was well balanced and complementary. the banana roti for dessert was nice but super sweet, had to be eaten slowly.

the pros: the most delicious, juicy duck, great ambiance, perfect for a date night or taking visitors.
the cons: extremely overpriced. $24 for 2 x bean curd rolls? $29 for a small serving of mediocre massaman beef curry that was lean and dry. $16 for 2 scoops of ice cream?! we were also overcharged for items we didn't order or didn't receive. our waitress charged us for 2 x servings of rice that we didn't order. it's incredibly presumptuous to add a side to a customers order. despite having an early booking and therestaurantnot being at full capacity, we felt rushed with our waitress hassling us. it made for an unpleasant experience when we were celebrating a special occasion.

one of our favourite places – in the basement of the restored state buildings long chim is turning out the best thai food in perth, in a great location – you can eat at the bar, in therestaurantproper between the arches, or out in the courtyard, weather permitting – it has something for everyone, so long as you enjoy food in the robust bangkok street style – spicy, at times hot, but always full of authentic aromatic and zesty thai flavours.

first time eating at long chim. since i am not from perth, it took me some time to go d it. you have to look for stairs going down.

therestaurantis dimly lit. service is good and staff attentive.

i have ordered the thai seafood laksa. the broth is richer compared to malaysian laksa. the bowl of laksa came piping hot with vermicelli noodles, seafood balls, prawns and very spicy coconut soup. compliment the fiery dish with lemongrass drink.

overall very tasty and spicy. highly recommended.

oh wow this place is amazing. we came here for dinner on friday night. we managed to reserve a table inside for 8pm. the lighting is dim and therestaurantis cosy and romantic. the staff were all lovely and the food was absolutely freaking delicious!! i highly recommend giving this place a visit. the octopus and every other grilled item was a 10/10 and they had no issue with serving the sauces on the side!

both times atrestauranthave been outstanding. this is my new favourite asian cuisine in perth both for work events and date night. love the set menu options providing a variety of scrumptious dishes and the cocktails were top notch. friendly, helpful service, decor is impressive and ambiance is spot on.

despite the mixed reviews i’ve been wanting try this place for some time! and finally tonight my partner and i decided to dine for the ‘chefs recommendation menu’. we took the $68pp option which had 8 courses (the $95pp option had an extra two courses of the lamb ribs and banana roti)
therestaurantitself is located downstairs in the treasury building. it has a beautiful warm and cozy feel to it. but that’s about as good as the positive news went for us.
to say our dining experience was a disappointment is probably an understatement. the quality of food, not to mention the portion sizes for the shared menu were very small and below average. to start we had chicken satay skewers, fried prawns and the pork and rice cakes. the skewers were okay, but definitely could use sauce. fried prawns tasted like nothing but batter. pork and rice cakes were good.
mains just got worse. fried fish tasted rubbery smothered in sickly sweet sauce. the two tiny pieces of roast duck did not belong in a green curry.
and finally our tiny coconut cake dessert. again, a sickly sweet coconut sugar cake that lacked sauce or an accompaniment of any kind!
honestly, this had to be the worst dining experience we’ve had in an asian restaurant. for $140 for two. this place is an absolute rip off for what it is. i’m so glad we didn’t go the $95pp option. after looking at the menu again we noticed the ribs on their own are $42 (we would have been paying an extra $50 for the ribs and given a smaller portion to share!)
so a tip to anyone that does want to try this place, regardless, for themselves - do not go the chefs menu. our thinking was ‘well this is the best dishes on the menu that the chef has selected’. this is definitely not the case imo. i’d recommend just go with a couple more friends and pick dishes from the main menu to share. but honestly, for the price, the quality is just not even worth the waste. save your $$ and dine elsewhere. there are plenty of amazing asian restaurants in perth that have far more to offer for a portion of the price.

this was my 2nd visit to long chim - this time for dinner and drinks, the 1st time was just for cocktails and dessert which was a fantastic experience. we arrived around 9:00pm on a wednesday evening and the crowd seemed to be starting to die down...

a group of 3 of us ordered the stir fried soft shell crab noodles, grilled lamb ribs and 'mussaman' curry of beef with a couple of serves of steamed rice for our choice of dinner. and unfortunately... it was extremely underwhelming and actually disappointing.

- the noodles in the soft shell crab dish came out as a massive lump, with the large halves of crab layered underneath. the crab although sizable in portion was mushy & watery, lacked flavour nor did it taste the freshest
- the lamb ribs which was supposed to be the hero of the dinner came out lukewarm and... far from tender and succulent, decent flavour though
- the mussaman beef was the best dish out of the 3 but still far from a standout.

these generally negative sentiments of the quality of the food were shared by all 3 of us in the dining group.

i am not 100% sure if it was because of the time of our visit or we just lucked out completely - irrespectively at long chim's price point and reputation it shouldn't be substandard at any given time. i am mindful that my experience may be isolated as the reviews from most of my friends as well as the ones i've read online are positive.

service was brilliant (although feeling ingenuine at times), cocktails brilliant as always and the vibe and sitting outdoors in that terrace area is completely chilled and comfortable. will definitely visit again for drinks but i doubt i will go for the food again - i can think of any other thairestaurantin perth that serves far better thai food based on this experience.

i’m a big fan of thai food and have been to lots of thai restaurants (cheap and expensive, good and bad). i have to say long chim is my least favourite thairestauranti’ve ever been to.
the $18 grilled pork is very small portion but we were still ok with it. the thai beef salad is small portion but tastes exactly how it should be so i thought ok at least the flavour is there for a $30 salad.
then i almost dropped my jaw when the curry fish we ordered was served. it was very bad presentation with 3.5 pieces of thumb sized broken fish fillet along with some veggies that i could hardly recognise what they were, served in the smallest bowl i’ve ever had for a thai curry dish. and the flavour is the worst curry i ever tasted, it was just watery spicy soup. this is unacceptable for a $33 dish. i expressed my unhappiness with this curry dish to the waitress and she kindly took it to the kitchen and came back with a few more fish fillets and veggies in it.
then the glass noodle was served, it felt like that the noodle, veggies, squid, eggs, pork mince were cooked separately and then merely plated together to form a dish. the mince was extremely salty.
look, i don’t mind you being pricy as a modern australian-asian restaurant, but you need to serve your customer what they pay for. food with this price being small quantity, it’s expected to have good quality and the taste! the curry fish should even be off the menu! i ended up with paying expensively with big disappointment and didn’t bother ordering any other things to try.
there are plenty of good thai restaurants. long chim - never again for me. and i will stop people i know from going as well merely to avoid a bad experience for them!
