if you’re planning an impromptu trip to the mornington peninsula then don’t worry, you’re not going to be left wanting for good food....if you’re after a view of the vines whilst you dine, then look to foxeys hangout in red hill. foxeys hangout is a light filled, modern, bustling space. tastings are carried out alongside the open kitchen where simple tapas style plates are prepared. diners can sit inside and be a part of the hustle of the kitchen or venture out onto the deck where you can eat sitting on the steps with a spectacular view of the lush vines before you. we choose the steps over a table- it’s more in keeping with the space and order a bottle of chardonnay. wine can be enjoyed by the glass or the bottle for an affordable price with a sparkling red, white, rose, pinot gris (sold out on our visit), chardonnay pinot noir and shiraz all under the vineyards own label. the style of eating is informal, produce driven and complements the wine first and foremost. we decide the best way to enjoy our time at foxeys hangout is to trust the chef and for around $33 per head- it’s great value. we start with two pieces of salmon that have been seared for but a second, which we swipe through some miso mayo. next, lazy tendrils of roasted capsicum, tangy fillets of white anchovies, capers and fresh parsley. a pool of earthy almost bitter olive oil arrives and we dip warm, crusty bread into it and then encrust it with pistachio spice...
