breakfast and brunch are a huge deal in montreal. so much so, that there are many restaurants that are dedicated to breakfast alone, and then close for the day around 3 or 4pm. (remember when cora took the rest of the country by storm? they originally began in montreal and follow this same principle.) fabergé is one such a restaurant and it is a beloved spot in mile end to get some morning eats. luckily for me, this place is only about two blocks from my house. to quote their website "one instantly recognizes the soulful vibe of the mile end, the neighbourhood we call home." i couldn't have put it better myself! it's the perfect bright and bustling local spot to fall into on a saturday or sunday morning while out for a stroll. i took special note of this place when i saw them featured on day of gluttony: 24 montreal restaurants in 24 hours.
the wait to get a table can sometimes be lengthy on the weekends, so the earlier that you can manage to show up, the better. they have a small and lovely wooden patio out front in the warmer months and i can't think of a nicer way to get to enjoy breakfast than doing so while taking in the scenes of mile end at the same time. we were lucky enough to nab a spot on said patio, and as such, didn't get to see a whole lot of the restaurant's interior. from what i did see, it's a very busy space with white chairs, purple upholstered benches and interesting mural art on the walls that continues straight up onto the ceiling. the storefront opens up completely to the sidewalk outside. i was happy to sit out in the hot sunshine, even if it was maybe a little bit too hot.
as soon as i found the matcha latte ($5.00) on the menu, i knew that it was the morning beverage for me. hot weather + hot drink be damned! this cup of deliciousness arrived looking positively beautiful, beaming with the unmistakeable colour of green matcha. it was creamy, yet light. finally something different than the typical choices! yum!
there are lots of choices when it comes to breakfast. including le massive, which sounds like the perfect quebecois meal, creton included. and a breakfast poutine that includes eggs and hollandaise. their "signature dish" is chicken & waffles, which i saw someone eating at a nearby table, and it looked incredibly epic. i'd get that the next time! they also offer a bunch of different benedicts. i was drawn immediately to one of the specials that day, the "mac & cheese" benedict (pulled pork, st-paulin cheese & jalapeño gellée - $14.00). i had the friendly server describe the dish to me, just to be sure that we were all on the same page, and boy were we ever! we're talking fried mac & cheese with pulled pork on top, topped with a poached egg, topped with hollandaise. i did not need to consider any further. all of the benedicts are also served with a cup of fruit and potatoes. the moment that i cut into this abomination of nature, i could see the cheesy macaroni noodles that were hiding within the fried round base. the pulled pork was savoury and tender, and the eggs were perfectly cooked with an oozy yolk. i found that the hollandaise seemed to be missing a little something, maybe some lemon? the potatoes were excellent, crispy and fried to perfection. the whole thing was perfectly insane in the best possible way.
i want fabergé to become "our neighbourhood breakfast place." our default on mornings when we don't want to go far and we don't want to make anything ourselves. i loved their vibe and i like where their heads are at when it comes to the food. they'll be seeing more of me!
