if there's a more authentic chinese bakery around the area then i haven't been there yet. the somewhat 'grimy' appearance only adds to its chinatown-esque charm. all the usual stuff is there (egg tarts, red bean pastry, sweet melon puffs etc) and more. also try the cream puffs outside, you can't miss it because of the hugequeuesnaking around, though i feel it's not the main attraction compared to the stuff sold inside.

20 feb' 15 in the afternoon we went to chinatown nightmarket. the market is held every friday from 4pm-11pm. the place was packed, so it was kind of hard to move around. we tried bbq pork ($4), didn't really like it. bee cheng hiang is wayy better. there is also one place that had a longqueue: emperor's puff we bought 3pcs for $1. the puffs were pipping hot, didn't really like it because the custard had a slight bitter aftertaste. dinner at naruone rice ($2) half-half ($35) we waited for more than 30 minutes for the chicken to came. the rice came not long after we ordered, but  the chicken hasn't come until the rice is cold. the boneless fried chicken gangjung was good, but there were too much chicken skin! :( the fried one is better, the other one (boneless fried chicken gangjung with sweet & spicy sauce) was too sweet for my liking, so it was kinda overwhelming after a few pieces.

emperor’s garden cream puffs. a chinatown institution. the lines are long and the service is abrupt, but these hot, custard filled little balls are worth it. last night during our wait in thequeuewe were treated to a kid trying to master the kickflip, while his friends rated him on his form. his friend, no matter what, wouldn’t give him a 9/10 – a score reserved for the greats. at one stage he told him “you’re no tony hawk,” which is true.

i never really understand the hype around these puffs. really it's just hot mini custard profiteroles. thequeueis never short and that's at all times of the day, any day of the week. this time was friday night market, my friends decided they want some, so we all ended up queuing for about 15mins. it's nice when it's warm, but they go cold pretty quick, so you can't even bulk buy and save for later or take home for family. so we just got 6 to share. honestly i wouldn't have bothered.

saw a long line of people waiting at a hole in the wall window so joined thequeueout of curiosity. the puffs were fresh, hot and delicious! the filling wasn’t too sweet either so you can eat heaps of them! had never heard of these before but seems to be a must-try in sydney chinatown!

for those who are curious about that crazyqueuethat never ceased to exist, this place only sells one thing: custard puffs.
they are not crumbling pastry puffs, more like a ball of sponge cake (of a more elastic texture) with custard filling. probably only good when they're fresh and warm out of the oven, once they cool down they start to collapse. not too sweet and probably explains why it's widely accepted. give it a go, it's very good value.

my ‘must eat’ when i’m back in sydney. love these hot and fluffy custard balls.queuecan be long but it clears up very fast. just get the 18 balls which is for $5. perfect snack to eat while walking around chinatown. no idea what exactly to describe it as although i studied baking. it’s some sort like cream puff that has filling in it but yet it has a little texture more towards pillowy cake. it just leaves you to eat more while thinking what it resembles. taste good!

this is a tiny hole in the wall kiosk in the heart of china town which attracts aqueuea mile long! i had to see what the fuss was naturally 😊 there is an amazing automated machine that spits out these tiny little puffed dough balls filled with hot oozy custard. so delicious! 1 for 35c, 3 for $1, or 18 for $5. the line does move fairly fast, it’s worth the wait 😊

this place is crowded at any given time of the day. mainly due to the famous cream puff. mostly there is aqueueleading up to the small window where one can place the order for the puffs which is for 35c each. they are delicious and melt inside with the hot cream. also, they have a small bakery which has a variety of breads, cakes and stuff. i tried the bbq pork bun which was steam and the bun was amazing.

battled an epicqueuefor these cream puffs (about 20 minutes). an extremely popular offering served out of a literal hole in the wall at the end of chinatown. the cream puffs are freshly made and offered for a pittance (35c each... can you even buy a bottle of water for that?). a quintessentially chinese baked good. warm, spongy exterior (slightly on the drier side for my liking) and gelatinous custard centre, not too sweet. wins on price and freshness alone.

this hole in the wall is such a little gem, pumping out generously filled "puffs" from morning to night. these are like profiterole/pancakes filled with custard and so fresh its piping hot. there is always aqueuefor these taste, fresh, cheap treats at 3 for $1 or 18 for $5!

one good thing working at the client's office is that the boss loves his food and he always get us something for afternoon tea! it was mini custard puffs this time round from emperor's puffs in chinatown. apparently there was noqueueand he took the opportunity. they tasted nicer than what i remembered, with creamy and smooth custard. they must have improved the recipe!

price was pretty reasonable but thequeueoutside the shop was really too long. the bite-sized puffs are tasty when eaten hot and fresh, custard is creamy but a bit too sweet for me🙂
