coconuts fish cafe

first place my fiance and i went to when we landed in maui after 20hrs of travel from sydney and after cleaning the fermented sweat in my erogenous zones we went to coconang fish cafe and i liked the poke and fish tacos and the server even gave us tips and instructions on how to eat the fish tacos but because i'm mainly a visual and kinaesthetic learner most of his tips went in one ear and out the other and the fishtacowas messy to eat but i don't blame the cafe i don't blame the man i don't blame the fish and i don't even blame thetacoi blame it on the boogie (michael jordan reference) and i had so much iced tea from the unlimited drinks fountain my fiance was afraid i would wet the bed on our first night in hawaii but i didn't because i'm a grown man i do it in a toilet

a casual restaurant right across the street from one of the best (sunset) beaches in maui.
place order at counter and find a seat at a wood carved surfboard table. the line moves fairly quickly. worth the wait. service is on point.
famous for their seafood, mainly the fish tacos.
thick meaty cubes of fresh mahi mahi and ono, a light coconut milk mayo coleslaw, and a generous topping of mango tomato salsa in a lightly crisp warm double corn tortilla...
a delicious handful. the smart hawaiian twist of using coconut milk instead of conventional mayo makes it surprisingly light tasting, not heavy at all.
i folded in half and enjoyed every messy bite.
tip: use a fork to help lighten the load of toppings!
you get to savour two times ($12.75 for twin tacos - may seem pricey but flavourful and very filling). colourful, bright, light and fresh - a symbol of everything that is maui!
we all agreed it was the best fishtacowe've eaten on the island.
we also tried the coconut shrimp with shaved coconut, battered and fried to crispy perfection served with pineapple chili sauce, and it too was finger licking good.
the food was so tasty we went back the next day.
oh and coconut’s is named in honour of the family kitty cat (who passed away this past november - rip coconut).
we give coconut’s cafe two thumbs wayyyy up, shaka-style.

fun atmosphere, fast service and food for everyone. my son had chicken alfredo, it was shockingly delicious. this was a huge portion that could be shared. i had thetacomountain, it was missing a tortilla, and when asked if i could buy some was told no, with that being said it was still amazing. get the seafood chowder it is amazing. the fish and chips was mediocre and get the blackened mahi mahi it's pretty good.

fish tacos - 2 tacos grilled with white corn tortillas and a variety of 17 different ingredients including tomato, cheese, france's coleslaw and mango salsa. the tacos are the signature dish of coconuts. they were quite large with heaps of toppings and delicious tender grilled fish. even though j fed h first, hertacowas still dry on the outside when she started eating.

fresh and fantastic!. this place is as amazing as everyone says it is. i would add though that it would be great to get 1 fishtacofor a lower price, perhaps this is an option already and i just don't know about it though. call it a canadian size if you like.

my husband and i tried the "fishtacomountain"...delicious! it's everything you find on the fish tacos heaped over brown rice (minus the tortilla)..if you're someone who isn't a fan of the messytacoexperience or gluten free, this is for you! it's also big enough to share or take some home for left overs..the employees were also very nice..we'll definitely be back.

update (2017):
my husband and i have dine here regularly since my first post and they have been consistent since then. i generally still order the "fishtacomountain"...my husband has tried the tacos and a few of the salads and has not been disappointed.

i also love that they have a few great children's menu choices. i am not a fan of the typical breaded chicken nuggets or mac and cheese fare you generally see on children's menus.. my son loves the grilled mahi mahi available in kids size.

fresh fish (caught daily), mango salsa, coleslaw and white corn tortillas. it's the most expensive fishtacoon the list, but in our humble opinion, it's worth every penny. we can't wait to go back!

loved it!. yes, i did have to eat my fishtacowith a fork too but it was an awesome fish taco. i loved everything about this place. i liked the story behind the name. cute. probably my favorite fishtacoplace on maui.

not impressed. my fish tacos were good, but were really hard to eat as a taco. why do i have to eat my fishtacowith a fork? my sweetie's fish burger was overcooked but the coconut oil taste was too sweet/strong and off-putting.

nice and easy food!. this is a great lunch or light dinner spot. it's a walk up and order place, take a seat and your food shows up in an appropriate amount of time, indicating they cooked it just for you. we had one order of blackened ono on brown rice plus one order of their fish tacos, both dishes were delicious. it's a bummer they won't sell you just onetacoas that would have been plenty for me. of course, it wasn't like i was suffering as i finished off the second because it was so good!!

good choice.. fish was done properly, not overdone like jawz. quality ingredients and very friendly service. our family of 5 split three fishtacoorders and fries and everybody was more than satisfied.
