coconuts fish cafe

we discovered coconuts a few years ago and wanted to come back here on this visit to maui. we enjoyed the hawaiian feeling, especially the tables in the shape of surfboards.

the menu focuses mostly on island fish like mahimahi and ono. chicken and beef are available. there are salads, tacos, dinner plates, and soups. youorderfrom the counter and they bring the food to your table. there is both indoor and outdoor seating. it is a very popular place. service and staff are helpful and friendly. they have opened a second restaurant near the kamaole beaches. the one we ate at is in the azeka shopping center.

took ourorderwas very helpful in walking us through the menu. well worth a stop. we will go back at least once.

this review and rating is based on this type of
restaurant. youorderat the front cashier and then pick a table where they bring you the food. the menu was full of fish options and other. the calamari was tender and not over cooked (which can unfortunately be quite common at many places), the coconut shrimp and thai pineapple dipping sauce was delicious, fish tacos were delicious, while the plain cheeseburger and remaining fish dishes were as expected with no surprises. the menu commented on the famous coleslaw, which although good, i was not sure why it was “famous”. service was fast and friendly, cost was reasonable and ambiance was great if you want to make some noise and be with a groups of friends just have a great bite to eat.

thick meaty cubes of fresh mahi mahi and ono, a light coconut milk mayo coleslaw, and a generous topping of mango tomato salsa in a lightly crisp warm double corn tortilla...
a delicious handful. the smart hawaiian twist of using coconut milk instead of conventional mayo makes it surprisingly light tasting, not heavy at all.
i folded in half and enjoyed every messy bite.
tip: use a fork to help lighten the load of toppings!
you get to savour two times ($12.75 for twin tacos - may seem pricey but flavourful and very filling). colourful, bright, light and fresh - a symbol of everything that is maui!
we all agreed it was the best fish taco we've eaten on the island.
we also tried the coconut shrimp with shaved coconut, battered and fried to crispy perfection served with pineapple chili sauce, and it too was finger licking good.
the food was so tasty we went back the next day.
oh and coconut’s is named in honour of the family kitty cat (who passed away this past november - rip coconut).
we give coconut’s cafe two thumbs wayyyy up, shaka-style.

coconut’s fish cafe is a small casual restaurant in the azeka mauka shopping center in kihei.  it is at 1279 south kihei road.  phone 808-875-9979. at coconut’s, youorderat a counter, they prepare your food quickly, and then you pick it up at the counter and eat at tables shaped like surfboards.  their specialties are fish tacos, fish & chips, and fish “burgers” (fish filet sandwiches).  their fish & chips is healthier than at most places, because it has a light coating and is not greasy.  in 2013, coconuts was named by cnn as one of the top ten places in the country to “eat like a local.”  see below for photos and a list of some of their menu items.

the interior decor was made up of picnic tables and surfboards. coconut’s fish cafe was named after the owner’s cat, coconut, and pictures of her decorated the walls. we placed ourorderat the counter, were given a number and choose a free seat. once the dishes were ready, a server delivered them to us.

coconuts was one of our favorite places to eat in kihei. the fish tacos are the best we have ever tasted! the tacos come 2 per order, and they are loaded with fish, mango salsa, coleslaw, and cheese - oneordercould easily be split. my husband loved the ahi burger - excellent quality & simply delicious!

fish tacos are large and delicious!orderthem with a bowl of the brown rice and eat your tacos over the rice to catch all the food that drops from your tacos. then add some chalula to the rice and you have a great dish to eat or to take home. highly recommend this restaurant.

my husband and i tried the "fish taco mountain"...delicious! it's everything you find on the fish tacos heaped over brown rice (minus the tortilla)..if you're someone who isn't a fan of the messy taco experience or gluten free, this is for you! it's also big enough to share or take some home for left overs..the employees were also very nice..we'll definitely be back.

update (2017):
my husband and i have dine here regularly since my first post and they have been consistent since then. i generally stillorderthe "fish taco mountain"...my husband has tried the tacos and a few of the salads and has not been disappointed.

i also love that they have a few great children's menu choices. i am not a fan of the typical breaded chicken nuggets or mac and cheese fare you generally see on children's menus.. my son loves the grilled mahi mahi available in kids size.

nice and easy food!. this is a great lunch or light dinner spot. it's a walk up andorderplace, take a seat and your food shows up in an appropriate amount of time, indicating they cooked it just for you. we had oneorderof blackened ono on brown rice plus oneorderof their fish tacos, both dishes were delicious. it's a bummer they won't sell you just one taco as that would have been plenty for me. of course, it wasn't like i was suffering as i finished off the second because it was so good!!

yummy fish tacos, a little expensive for our taste, though. the tacos look small but anordercomes with two and they are filling. friendly atmosphere and the owner/chef frequents the front end to make sure his customers are satisfied.
