slow service, sour salad, sour visit.... i have been to calories a number of times and i have eaten some very nice food there. indeed, it is one of a very few restaurants in saskatoon that i have been happy to recommend. unfortunately, one of the problems of having high expectations is a substantial sense of let-down when things are not so good. this was the case today, when two of us visited calories for lunch. we were seated immediately, but our order was not taken for about 25 minutes. and the food did not come until we had been in the restaurant for about 45 minutes. this is much too slow for a lunch time service in a down-town environment. i ordered what was described on the menu as mexican corn salad with barley, black beans and arugula, with a cup of pumpkin soup as an accompaniment. i usually like corn and bean salads, but this one was not to my liking - an obdurate mass primarily consisting of barley, which was definitely over-seasoned; much too acidic and too salty; i ate enough to satisfy my hunger and abandoned the rest. the pumpkin soup was by contrast bland in the extreme, and was a most un-appetizing off-gray color. i could not stomach my soup at all, so i decided that there was no point in my eating it. my arugula had some decaying leaves mixed in, and moreover the bread served with my lunch was rock hard on one side and tasted quite stale. my salad came with sweet potato chips which were very nice, but alas there were only two of these. overall, just like my salad, this visit to calories was distinctly on the sour side, and i regret that i feel unable to recommend them anymore.
