didn't meet expectations.... given the recent praise in planet s, and the overall good ratings about calories, i was not very impressed...

couple weeks ago i went to calories for the first time for dinner with my bf, we ordered the burger and lake trout. presentation was great, but taste wise was bland. i really hope they can add more flavour to everything. their dessert made up for the night.

last sunday, had my friend from toronto visiting me, so we went for the brunch. she had the maple syrup eggs and croissant, she said it was very sweet, it would be an indulgence to have the whole thing.. i had the frittata, the whole time wondering if they forgot the salt, texture was very good, fluffy and perfectly baked, but again totally lacking in the flavor department.

am i just ordering the wrong things?? any suggestions? i really don't want to give up on thisplacesince it has such a good rep.

the food here is always good.  i like the atmosphere because it's laid back while also providing good service.  i appreciate the servers are attentive without being overly so.  that's tough to balance yet all the servers here seem to manage it.  the food always tastes fresh and is served quickly.  the menu changes relatively frequently so even though i go here regularly i usually end up with something new every time.

this is a greatplacefor late night coffee and dessert.

thisplacenever disappoints when it comes to cheesecake! most cakes, really. been here a few times, and the only sad thing is that serving sizes seem to have gotten smaller over the last two years! amazing cheesecake, though not innovative or creative. if only i had the metabolism i had 10 years ago...

i haven't been here for a few years, so i thought i would stop in to pick up some cheesecake from their display area. i waited 5 mins for someone to take my takeout order, while the staff was busy clearing a table (most of the restaurant was empty). after one of the staff finally realized that i wanted toplacean order (and not just mindlessly stand there looking directly at the them for no apparent reason), my order was finally placed. another customer behind me also placed her order with a different staff member. but to my luck, her order was completed first because the staff member who took her order completed it himself. finally after a few minutes i got my order. the cheesecake was delicious but they seriously need to get their service figured out. mostly empty restaurant + 4 staff members working in the front area and they still don't realize that someone is here for a pickup order. very disappointing.

i think thisplacehas some of the best desserts in the city! the best cheesecakes anyway. the drinks at calories are also very good! i have never recieved a drink that i didn't think was delicious. however, i have found the breakfasts to be only so-so. there are definitely better places to get breakfast in saskatoon.

slightly pretentious, not my choice for a gourmet burger.. had supper there with my wife. having read all the descriptions, we were prepared to be amazed. we were not. we both ordered pretty straightforward meals - i had the burger, she had the veggie burger. the burgers were fine, but the fries were way over-salted and wilted. we both had dessert - she had the oreo cheesecake, i had the carrot cake. my wife enjoyed hers, but mine was dry and seemed like it had been sitting all day. anyone who thinks these desserts are better than those at prairie ink has rock in their heads.

overall, theplacejust seems slightly pretentious. from their homemade ketchup to the fact that they don't serve coke or pepsi products (because, we were told, the chef is planning on making colas from scratch), to the fact that their menus suggest they prefer cash or debit (they accepted a credit card when pressed), we just weren't impressed.

i've read the many reviews of theplaceand perhaps if we had tried something more complex we would have been happier. as far as gourmet burgers go, though, pay the extra two dollars and get the burger at ayden kitchen and bar - the burgers are tastier, the fries are better and you can actually get a coke with your meal.

great tasting food.. i have tried so many things at thisplaceand i have never been disappointed. i love coming for their $10 tuesday burgers, great deal. the desserts are super yummy, and i've certainly stopped by for just a treat. they can be quite busy at peak moments so i often try to come at an odd hr to avoid the crowds.

'real food' shines at calories. i've been wanting to write a review for calories for a long time and i'm finally doing it!

we live a few hours out of town and only get into the city once or twice a month. and i very much look forward to dining at calories any chance we get! from perfect quiches, to hearty delicious from-scratch soups, to to-die-for desserts (my favourite is turtle squares!) and many more things, there has been nothing that i haven't enjoyed for the attention to detail in flavours, textures and presentation. even the kids plate with just one 'house-made' cookie or treat, is actually full of healthy-but-fun finger food that my kids think is so cool! i find myself going home inspired to research and try master something new... and even attempt to teach my kids what i've learned about classic french cooking!

but maybe what makes thisplacespecial to me is that i know just how committed they are to using the best local foods they can find. i know it costs more to buy food is raised 'small scale organic' ,'pasture-based' or 'wild caught' ...vs... the 'bigger-faster-fatter-cheaper' food that the sysco truck brings. it means many more accounts to manage, farms to visit, relationships to keep, not to mention the diverse kitchen skills needed to deal with whole animal butchery which is often the way local farmers need to sell meat.

and i guess i'll just say it...i am one of those "pasture-based" farmers. we've worked with quite a few local-food restaurants and things aren't always what they seem...lets just say...if the price seems to good to be true, it might be!

but remi and his team are the real deal...they take great pride in working with the best food they can get and doing all the preparation of it themselves, and have for almost 20 years, long before local food was "in". i hope it doesn't go unnoticed that their sauces and condiments take flavour to a whole new level not ever seen in the bulk commercial versions we are used to. from the time i've spent in the back of restaurant kitchens, i've seen how physically demanding, frantic-paced the work is, but when you add in the degree of "from-scratch" cooking that is always brewing in calories...well, my hat go off to you all as true artisans in your field!

thank you for every delicious real meal i've ever ate from your kitchen, calories...it was worth every bite!

ps they are the only chefs and staff that buy food for 'personal use' from us! i think that says a lot...

great dessert options. i've been here for dessert a few times and have enjoyed the cheesecake options in particular.
it's not my favoriteplaceto go however - the atmosphere leaves a bit to be desired. the restaurant is small, which isn't a big deal but i don't like sitting in a 'squished' environment, where you can hear every word of the conversation the table next to you is having.
i've never had an issue with the staff but reading some of the reviews here make me a little uncomfortable - seems like theplaceis getting a little pretentious.
all in all, i enjoy calories for an occasional indulgence but it's not aplacethat i typically frequent.

meh.... first off, theplacewas very busy and we did not have reservations. the hostess was really nice and seated us in the corner. we ordered beverages - the prairie punch and the elderflower cocktail, although- my boyfriend didn't get what he ordered. he just got a pop. it was tight, kind of squishy, the tables we a little close together as it was awkward to move around and we could openly hear our neighbors conversations. we ordered the fish terrine ($12)- and it was delicious! i ordered the duck breast ($28) - and my boyfriend ordered the beef organic ($32). the plates came out, and i got a duck leg- well done, and the beef was well done as well. i would have prefered the breast, as it generally tastes better----and it's what i ordered. my boyfriend ended up eating both, while i scarfed down the cabbage... when the waitress came back- we ordered the sangria...and i had told her about the meal- and how it wasn't what we ordered... she shrugged, smiled and left... the desserts looked amazing- but at this point i just wanted out. the sangria was also very delicious. the bill ended up being $110.50 without tip... personally, i think it's a little pricey for the less than mediocre food.

great meal. my wife and i went here for date night recently and had one of the best meals we've had in a long time. the blue point oysters were the freshest and briniest we have ever had in saskatoon and we eat them any chance we get. i had a strip steak with fennel and a potato gratin. the steak was cooked perfectly and the sides were tasty as well. my wife had a chicken pasta dish that was good, but the diced chicken was overcooked ( the only fault in the entire meal). we couldn't leave without dessert and the toffee cheesecake looked good. it also tasted good and had crunchy toffee bits sprinkled on top. the service was attentive even though theplacewas packed. we have spent a lot of money on subpar fine dining experiences in saskatoon over the past year but we were very happy with our night at calories.
